¹⁴ Bring these things to remembrance, giving a solemn charge in the presence of the Lord not to dispute about words. It answereth no useful purpose. It tendeth to the subversion of the hearers.

²¹ and do not transgress by following those imaginary beings which can effect nothing, and which cannot deliver, for they are nothing;

⁸ The priests did not say, "Where is the Lord?" and they who studied the law did not know me; the pastors also transgressed against me; and the prophets prophesied for Baal and went after an unprofitable thing.

¹¹ have nations changed their Gods, though they are no Gods? but my people have changed their glory for that which will not profit them.

⁸ But if you continue to trust in lying words from which you can derive no benefit;

¹⁹ [p] O Lord, Thou art my strength and my help, and my refuge in days of affliction. To Thee nations will come from the extremity of the earth and say, What lying idols did our fathers possess! there is no advantage in them.

³² therefore behold I am against those prophets who prophesy false dreams. Have they not told them and led my people astray by their lies and their errors? As for me, I neither sent them nor commanded them; therefore they cannot in any wise benefit this people.

³⁶ So mention no more the burden of the Lord: since every man's word shall be his burden.

¹⁸ Of what avail is a graven thing, that they have engraved it? Did one cause a molten mass, a false fantasy, to be cast, because the caster had a confidence that by casting he would make dumb idols?

²⁶ For what will a man be profited, if he should gain the whole world, and be punished with the forfeit of his life? Or, what will not a man give as a ransom for his life?

¹⁰ said, O! full of all deceit and of all wickedness, son of the devil, enemy of all righteousness; wilt thou not cease to pervert the right ways of the Lord!

²⁴ greeting. As we have heard that some who went out from among us have troubled you with discourses, unsettling your minds, saying, You must be circumcised and keep the law, though we gave them no such injunction,

¹ Receive into fellowship him who is weak in the faith, without regard to differences of opinions.

⁷ which is owing to nothing but this, that there are some who trouble you, and wish to pervert the glad tidings of the Christ.

¹⁷ This therefore I say and testify in the Lord, that you no more walk, as the rest of the nations do, in the vanity of their mind.

¹ Wherefore, as to what remaineth, we beseech you brethren, and exhort you, by the Lord Jesus, that as you have received from us how you ought to walk and please God, you would abound more and more.

⁶ Now we charge you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to withdraw yourselves from every brother who walketh disorderly and not according to the doctrine which he received from us.

⁴ nor pay attention to fables and endless genealogies, which rather promote disputes than the godly edification, which is by faith:

⁶ from which some having swerved, have turned aside to vain discourse,

⁸ For bodily exercise is of little service, but this godliness is profitable for all things, having a promise of the present life and of that to come.

²¹ I charge thee before the God and Lord Jesus Christ, and the chosen angels, to observe these things without prejudging, and to do nothing by partiality.

⁴ he is puffed up, knowing nothing, but raving upon questions and debates about words, from which proceed envy, contention, abusive language, evil suspicions, ⁵ preposterous studies of men whose minds are corrupt and devoid of truth, who suppose this religion to be a matter of gain. From such withdraw thyself.

¹³ I charge thee in the presence of God, who giveth life to all, and of Christ Jesus who witnessed before Pontius Pilate the good confession,

⁶ for which cause I remind thee to kindle up that gift of God which is in thee by the laying on of my hands.

¹⁶ And repress those profane empty declamations; for they will proceed on to farther impiety;

²³ And avoid foolish and ignorant debates, knowing that they generate strifes.

¹ I therefore charge thee in the presence of the God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who is about to judge living and dead at his glorious appearance and reign,

⁹ But discountenance foolish questions, and genealogies, and strifes, and debates about law: for they are unprofitable and vain. ¹⁰ With regard to a factious man, after a first and second admonition, avoid him; ¹¹ knowing that such a one is wholly turned aside, and sinneth self condemned.

¹³ Indeed I think it right, as long as I am in this tabernacle, to stir you up by admonition;
