⁹ Why then hast thou despised the word of the Lord, to do evil in his sight? Thou hast slain Ourias the Chettite with the sword, and taken his wife to be thy wife. Thou hast indeed slain him with the sword of the Ammonites. ¹⁰ Now therefore the sword shall never depart from thy house. Because thou hast despised me, and taken the wife of Ourias the Chettite to be thy wife,

¹⁴ But because thou hast by this deed given great occasion to the enemies of the Lord to blaspheme, therefore thy son who is born to thee shall surely die.

¹⁷ But happy the man whom the Lord correcteth. Therefore despise not thou the correction of the Almighty. ¹⁸ For He causeth pain and again removeth it: and him whom he smote, his hands have healed.

¹² for whom the Lord loveth he reproveth: and chastiseth every son whom he receiveth.

⁶ For whom the Lord loveth he reproveth, And chastiseth every son whom he receiveth. ⁷ If you endure correction God dealeth with you as sons. For what son is there whom a father doth not correct? ⁸ Now if you are without correction, of which all are partakers, you are indeed bastards and not sons. ⁹ Well then: we have had fathers of our flesh who have corrected us, and we have reverenced them; shall we not much more submit ourselves to the father of our spirits, and live? ¹⁰ For they indeed for a few days corrected us as they thought fit; but he for our advantage, that we may partake of his holiness.

¹⁹ Whomsoever I love, I rebuke and chastise. Be zealous therefore, and reform.
