⁷ Now, then, it is indeed a disparagement to you that you have law suits among yourselves. Why do you not rather suffer wrong? Why do you not rather suffer loss?

⁵ then thou shalt understand the fear of the Lord; and find the knowledge of God.

⁸ that they may keep the paths of rectitude. And he will guard the way of them who reverence him. ⁹ Then thou shalt understand judgment and justice; and direct all thy wheels right. ¹⁰ For when wisdom entereth into thine understanding: and knowledge appeareth pleasant to thy soul:

²² Do not say, I will take vengeance on an enemy; but wait for the Lord that he may help thee.

² They divided their hearts; they shall now be destroyed. He will demolish their altars. Their pillars shall be in extreme distress.

³⁹ But I say to you, Contend not with the injurious: but if one smite thee on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. ⁴⁰ And if any determine to sue thee at law for thy vest, give it up to him, nay were it even thy mantle. ⁴¹ And if one press thee to go one mile, go with him two.

²⁹ To him who smiteth thee on one cheek, present also the other. And from him who taketh thy mantle, withhold not thy coat.

¹⁷ Render to none evil for evil. Be provident in regard to things good in the sight of all men. ¹⁸ If possible, that is, as far as in your power, be at peace with all men. ¹⁹ Beloved, avenge not yourselves, but give place to the wrath; for it is written, "Vengeance is mine; I will requite, saith the Lord."

¹⁵ see that none return evil for evil to any one; but on all occasions do all the good you can, both to one another and to all men.

¹ Whence come wars and fightings among you? Is it not from this"from those sensual appetites of yours which are at war in your members? ² You covet and use not. You kill, and envy, and cannot enjoy. You fight, and wage war, and do not possess, because you do not ask. ³ You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may lavish on your sensual appetites.

¹⁹ For this is pleasing, if from a conscientious regard to God one endureth grief suffering wrongfully. ²⁰ For what glory is it, if when you commit a fault and are beaten, you suffer patiently? But if when acting well you meet with ill usage, and bear it, this is well pleasing in the sight of God. ²¹ For to this you have been called, because Christ himself suffered for you, leaving you an example that you should follow in his footsteps, ²² "Who committed no sin, nor was guile found in his mouth"; ²³ who when he was reviled, did not revile again, when he suffered, did not threaten; but committed himself to him who judgeth righteously;

⁹ not rendering evil for evil, revile for revile; but on the contrary, blessing; knowing that you have been called for this, that you may inherit a blessing.
