¹ And the LORD spoke to Moses in the plains of Moab by Jordan near Jericho, saying, ² command the children of Israel, that they give to the Levites of the inheritance of their possession cities to dwell in; and you shall give also to the Levites suburbs for the cities all around them. ³ And the cities shall they have to dwell in; and the suburbs of them shall be for their domestic beasts, and for their goods, and for all their beasts. ⁴ And the suburbs of the cities, which you shall give to the Levites, shall reach from the wall of the city and outward a thousand cubits all around. ⁵ And you shall measure from outside the city on the east side two thousand cubits, and on the south side two thousand cubits, and on the west side two thousand cubits, and on the north side two thousand cubits; and the city shall be in the middle: This shall be to them the suburbs of the cities. ⁶ And among the cities which you shall give to the Levites there shall be six cities for refuge, which you shall appoint for the manslayer, that he may flee thither: And to them you shall add forty and two cities. ⁷ So all the cities which you shall give to the Levites shall be forty and eight cities: Them shall you give with their suburbs. ⁸ And the cities which you shall give shall be of the possession of the children of Israel: From those that have many you shall give many; but from those that have few you shall give few: Every one shall give of his cities to the Levites according to his inheritance which he inherits. ⁹ And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, ¹⁰ speak to the children of Israel, and say to them, When you be come over the Jordan into the land of Canaan; ¹¹ then you shall appoint you cities to be cities of refuge for you; that the slayer may flee thither, which kills any person at unawares. ¹² And they shall be to you cities for refuge from the avenger; that the manslayer die not, until he stand before the congregation in judgment. ¹³ And of these cities which you shall give six cities shall you have for refuge. ¹⁴ You shall give three cities on this side of the Jordan, and three cities shall you give in the land of Canaan, which shall be cities of refuge. ¹⁵ These six cities shall be a refuge, both for the children of Israel, and for the stranger, and for the sojourner among them: That everyone that kills any person unawares may flee thither. ¹⁶ And if he smite him with an instrument of iron, so that he die, he is a murderer: The murderer shall surely be put to death. ¹⁷ And if he smite him with throwing a stone, with which he may die, and he die, he is a murderer: The murderer shall surely be put to death. ¹⁸ Or if he smite him with a hand weapon of wood, with which he may die, and he die, he is a murderer: The murderer shall surely be put to death. ¹⁹ The revenger of blood himself shall slay the murderer: When he meets him, he shall slay him. ²⁰ But if he thrust him of hatred, or hurl at him by laying of wait, that he die; ²¹ or in enmity smite him with his hand, that he die: He that smote him shall surely be put to death; for he is a murderer: The revenger of blood shall slay the murderer, when he meets him. ²² But if he thrust him suddenly without enmity, or have cast on him anything without laying of wait, ²³ or with any stone, with which a man may die, seeing him not, and cast it on him, that he die, and was not his enemy, neither sought his harm: ²⁴ Then the congregation shall judge between the slayer and the revenger of blood according to these judgments: ²⁵ And the congregation shall deliver the slayer out of the hand of the revenger of blood, and the congregation shall restore him to the city of his refuge, where he had fled: And he shall abide in it to the death of the high priest, which was anointed with the holy oil. ²⁶ But if the slayer shall at any time come outside the border of the city of his refuge, where he had fled; ²⁷ and the revenger of blood find him outside the borders of the city of his refuge, and the revenger of blood kill the slayer; he shall not be guilty of blood: ²⁸ Because he should have remained in the city of his refuge until the death of the high priest: But after the death of the high priest the slayer shall return into the land of his possession. ²⁹ So these things shall be for a statute of judgment to you throughout your generations in all your dwellings. ³⁰ Whoever kills any person, the murderer shall be put to death by the mouth of witnesses: But one witness shall not testify against any person to cause him to die. ³¹ Moreover you shall take no satisfaction for the life of a murderer, which is guilty of death: But he shall surely be put to death. ³² And you shall take no satisfaction for him that is fled to the city of his refuge, that he should come again to dwell in the land, until the death of the priest. ³³ So you shall not pollute the land in which you are: For blood it defiles the land: And the land cannot be cleansed of the blood that is shed in it, but by the blood of him that shed it. ³⁴ Defile not therefore the land which you shall inhabit, in which I dwell: For I the LORD dwell among the children of Israel.

¹ And the children of Israel set forward, and pitched in the plains of Moab on this side of the Jordan by Jericho.

⁶³ These are those that were numbered by Moses and Eleazar the priest, who numbered the children of Israel in the plains of Moab by Jordan near Jericho.

¹² And they brought the captives, and the prey, and the spoil, to Moses, and Eleazar the priest, and to the congregation of the children of Israel, to the camp at the plains of Moab, which are by Jordan near Jericho.

⁵⁰ And the LORD spoke to Moses in the plains of Moab by Jordan near Jericho, saying,

¹³ These are the commandments and the judgments, which the LORD commanded by the hand of Moses to the children of Israel in the plains of Moab by Jordan near Jericho.

³² Notwithstanding the cities of the Levites, and the houses of the cities of their possession, may the Levites redeem at any time. ³³ And if a man purchase of the Levites, then the house that was sold, and the city of his possession, shall go out in the year of jubilee: For the houses of the cities of the Levites are their possession among the children of Israel. ³⁴ But the field of the suburbs of their cities may not be sold; for it is their perpetual possession.

³ For Moses had given the inheritance of two tribes and a half tribe on the other side of the Jordan: But to the Levites he gave none inheritance among them. ⁴ For the children of Joseph were two tribes, Manasseh and Ephraim: Therefore they gave no part to the Levites in the land, save cities to dwell in, with their suburbs for their domestic beasts and for their substance.

² and they spoke to them at Shiloh in the land of Canaan, saying, "The LORD commanded by the hand of Moses to give us cities to dwell in, with its suburbs for our domestic beasts. ³ And the children of Israel gave to the Levites out of their inheritance, at the commandment of the LORD, these cities and their suburbs. ⁴ And the lot came out for the families of the Kohathites: And the children of Aaron the priest, which were of the Levites, had by lot out of the tribe of Judah, and out of the tribe of Simeon, and out of the tribe of Benjamin, thirteen cities. ⁵ And the rest of the children of Kohath had by lot out of the families of the tribe of Ephraim, and out of the tribe of Dan, and out of the half tribe of Manasseh, ten cities. ⁶ And the children of Gershon had by lot out of the families of the tribe of Issachar, and out of the tribe of Asher, and out of the tribe of Naphtali, and out of the half tribe of Manasseh in Bashan, thirteen cities. ⁷ The children of Merari by their families had out of the tribe of Reuben, and out of the tribe of Gad, and out of the tribe of Zebulun, twelve cities. ⁸ And the children of Israel gave by lot to the Levites these cities with their suburbs, as the LORD commanded by the hand of Moses. ⁹ And they gave out of the tribe of the children of Judah, and out of the tribe of the children of Simeon, these cities which are here mentioned by name. ¹⁰ Which the children of Aaron, being of the families of the Kohathites, who were of the children of Levi, had: For theirs was the first lot. ¹¹ And they gave them the city of Arba the father of Anak, which city is Hebron, in the hill country of Judah, with its suburbs all around it. ¹² But the fields of the city, and its villages, gave they to Caleb the son of Jephunneh for his possession. ¹³ Thus they gave to the children of Aaron the priest Hebron with her suburbs, to be a city of refuge for the slayer; and Libnah with her suburbs, ¹⁴ and Jattir with her suburbs, and Eshtemoa with her suburbs, ¹⁵ and Holon with her suburbs, and Debir with her suburbs, ¹⁶ and Ain with her suburbs, and Juttah with her suburbs, and Bethshemesh with her suburbs; nine cities out of those two tribes. ¹⁷ And out of the tribe of Benjamin, Gibeon with her suburbs, Geba with her suburbs, ¹⁸ anathoth with her suburbs, and Almon with her suburbs; four cities. ¹⁹ All the cities of the children of Aaron, the priests, were thirteen cities with their suburbs. ²⁰ And the families of the children of Kohath, the Levites which remained of the children of Kohath, even they had the cities of their lot out of the tribe of Ephraim. ²¹ For they gave them Shechem with her suburbs in Mount Ephraim, to be a city of refuge for the slayer; and Gezer with her suburbs, ²² and Kibzaim with her suburbs, and Bethhoron with her suburbs; four cities. ²³ And out of the tribe of Dan, Eltekeh with her suburbs, Gibbethon with her suburbs, ²⁴ aijalon with her suburbs, Gathrimmon with her suburbs; four cities. ²⁵ And out of the half tribe of Manasseh, Tanach with her suburbs, and Gathrimmon with her suburbs; two cities. ²⁶ All the cities were ten with their suburbs for the families of the children of Kohath that remained. ²⁷ And to the children of Gershon, of the families of the Levites, out of the other half tribe of Manasseh they gave Golan in Bashan with her suburbs, to be a city of refuge for the slayer; and Beeshterah with her suburbs; two cities. ²⁸ And out of the tribe of Issachar, Kishon with her suburbs, Dabareh with her suburbs, ²⁹ jarmuth with her suburbs, Engannim with her suburbs; four cities. ³⁰ And out of the tribe of Asher, Mishal with her suburbs, Abdon with her suburbs, ³¹ helkath with her suburbs, and Rehob with her suburbs; four cities. ³² And out of the tribe of Naphtali, Kedesh in Galilee with her suburbs, to be a city of refuge for the slayer; and Hammothdor with her suburbs, and Kartan with her suburbs; three cities. ³³ All the cities of the Gershonites according to their families were thirteen cities with their suburbs. ³⁴ And to the families of the children of Merari, the rest of the Levites, out of the tribe of Zebulun, Jokneam with her suburbs, and Kartah with her suburbs, ³⁵ dimnah with her suburbs, Nahalal with her suburbs; four cities. ³⁶ And out of the tribe of Reuben, Bezer with her suburbs, and Jahazah with her suburbs, ³⁷ kedemoth with her suburbs, and Mephaath with her suburbs; four cities. ³⁸ And out of the tribe of Gad, Ramoth in Gilead with her suburbs, to be a city of refuge for the slayer; and Mahanaim with her suburbs, ³⁹ heshbon with her suburbs, Jazer with her suburbs; four cities in all. ⁴⁰ So all the cities for the children of Merari by their families, which were remaining of the families of the Levites, were by their lot twelve cities. ⁴¹ All the cities of the Levites within the possession of the children of Israel were forty and eight cities with their suburbs. ⁴² These cities were every one with their suburbs all around them: Thus were all these cities.

¹ Moreover, when you shall divide the land by lot for inheritance, you shall offer an oblation to the LORD, a holy portion of the land: The length shall be twenty-five thousand reeds, and the width shall be ten thousand. This shall be holy in all its borders all around. ² Of this there shall be for the sanctuary five hundred in length, with five hundred in width, square all around; and fifty cubits all around for its suburbs. ³ And of this measure you shall measure the length of twenty-five thousand, and the width of ten thousand: And in it shall be the sanctuary and the most holy place. ⁴ The holy portion of the land shall be for the priests the ministers of the sanctuary, which shall come near to minister to the LORD: And it shall be a place for their houses, and a holy place for the sanctuary. ⁵ And the twenty-five thousand of length, and the ten thousand of width, the Levites, the ministers of the house, shall also have for themselves, for a possession of twenty chambers. ⁶ And you shall appoint the possession of the city five thousand wide, and twenty-five thousand long, adjacent to the oblation of the holy parcel: It shall be for the whole house of Israel. ⁷ And a portion shall be for the prince on the one side and on the other side of the oblation of the holy parcel, and of the possession of the city, before the oblation of the holy parcel, and before the possession of the city, from the west side westward, and from the east side eastward: And the length shall be adjacent to one of the parcels, from the west border to the east border. ⁸ His possession shall be in the land of Israel: And My princes shall no longer oppress My people; and they shall give the rest of the land to the house of Israel according to their tribes."

⁸ And by the border of Judah, from the east side to the west side, shall be the offering which you shall offer of twenty-five thousand reeds in width, and in length as one of the other parts, from the east side to the west side: And the sanctuary shall be in the middle of it.

²² Moreover, from the possession of the Levites, and from the possession of the city, being in the midst of that which is the prince's, between the border of Judah and the border of Benjamin, shall be for the prince.

¹⁰ Or does He say it altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, this is written: That he that plows should plow in hope; and he that threshes in hope should be a partaker of his hope. ¹¹ If we have sown to you spiritual things, is it a great thing if we shall reap your carnal things? ¹² If others are partakers of this power over you, are not we for better reason? Nevertheless we have not used this power; but suffer all things, lest we hinder the gospel of Christ. ¹³ Do you not know that those who minister around holy things live from the things of the temple? And those who wait at the altar are partakers with the altar? ¹⁴ Even so the Lord has ordained that those who preach the gospel should live from the gospel.

¹¹ And they gave them the city of Arba the father of Anak, which city is Hebron, in the hill country of Judah, with its suburbs all around it.

¹⁴ For the Levites left their suburbs and their possession, and came to Judah and Jerusalem: For Jeroboam and his sons had cast them off from executing the priest's office to the LORD:

² Of this there shall be for the sanctuary five hundred in length, with five hundred in width, square all around; and fifty cubits all around for its suburbs.

¹³ And of these cities which you shall give six cities shall you have for refuge. ¹⁴ You shall give three cities on this side of the Jordan, and three cities shall you give in the land of Canaan, which shall be cities of refuge.

⁴¹ Then Moses severed three cities on this side of the Jordan toward the sun rise; ⁴² that the slayer might flee thither, which should kill his neighbor unawares, and hated him not in times past; and that fleeing to one of these cities he might live: ⁴³ Namely, Bezer in the wilderness, in the plain country, of the Reubenites; and Ramoth in Gilead, of the Gadites; and Golan in Bashan, of the Manassites.

² speak to the children of Israel, saying, "Appoint out for you cities of refuge, whereof I spoke to you by the hand of Moses: ³ That the slayer that kills any person unawares and unwittingly may flee thither: And they shall be your refuge from the avenger of blood. ⁴ And when he that does flee to one of those cities shall stand at the entering of the gate of the city, and shall declare his cause in the ears of the elders of that city, they shall take him into the city to them, and give him a place, that he may dwell among them. ⁵ And if the avenger of blood pursue after him, then they shall not deliver the slayer up into his hand; because he smote his neighbor unwittingly, and hated him not beforetime. ⁶ And he shall dwell in that city, until he stand before the congregation for judgment, and until the death of the high priest that shall be in those days: Then shall the slayer return, and come to his own city, and to his own house, to the city from where he fled. ⁷ And they appointed Kedesh in Galilee in Mount Naphtali, and Shechem in Mount Ephraim, and Kirjatharba, which is Hebron, in the mountain of Judah. ⁸ And on the other side of the Jordan by Jericho eastward, they assigned Bezer in the wilderness on the plain out of the tribe of Reuben, and Ramoth in Gilead out of the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan out of the tribe of Manasseh. ⁹ These were the cities appointed for all the children of Israel, and for the stranger that sojourns among them, that whoever kills any person at unawares might flee thither, and not die by the hand of the avenger of blood, until he stood before the congregation.

³ And the children of Israel gave to the Levites out of their inheritance, at the commandment of the LORD, these cities and their suburbs.

⁹ The LORD will also be a refuge for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble.

⁷ In God is my salvation and my glory: The rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God. ⁸ Trust in Him at all times; you people, pour out your heart before Him: God is a refuge for us. Selah.

⁴ I looked on my right hand side, and beheld, but there was no man that knew me: Refuge failed me; no man cared for my soul. ⁵ I cried out to You, O LORD: I said, "You are my refuge and my portion in the land of the living.

⁶ And there shall be a tabernacle for a shade in the daytime from the heat, and for a place of refuge, and for a shelter from storm and from rain.

²⁸ Come to Me, all you that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

¹⁸ That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us:

⁵⁴ Now these are their dwelling places throughout their castles in their coasts, of the sons of Aaron, of the families of the Kohathites: For theirs was the lot. ⁵⁵ And they gave them Hebron in the land of Judah, and its suburbs all around it. ⁵⁶ But the fields of the city, and its villages, they gave to Caleb the son of Jephunneh. ⁵⁷ And to the sons of Aaron they gave the cities of Judah, namely, Hebron, the city of refuge, and Libnah with her suburbs, and Jattir, and Eshtemoa, with their suburbs, ⁵⁸ and Hilen with her suburbs, Debir with her suburbs, ⁵⁹ and Ashan with her suburbs, and Bethshemesh with her suburbs: ⁶⁰ And out of the tribe of Benjamin; Geba with her suburbs, and Alemeth with her suburbs, and Anathoth with her suburbs. ⁷ Cursed be their anger, for it was fierce; and their wrath, for it was cruel: I will divide them in Jacob, and scatter them in Israel.

¹⁸ And when they measured it with an omer, he that gathered much had nothing left over, and he that gathered little had no lack; every man gathered according to his eating.

²⁸ And the children of Levi did according to the word of Moses: And there fell of the people that day about three thousand men. ²⁹ For Moses had said, "Consecrate yourselves today to the LORD, even every man upon his son, and upon his brother; that He may bestow upon you a blessing this day."

⁵⁴ To many you shall give the more inheritance, and to few you shall give the less inheritance: To every one shall his inheritance be given according to those that were numbered of him.

⁵⁴ And you shall divide the land by lot for an inheritance among your families: And to the more you shall give the more inheritance, and to the fewer you shall give the less inheritance: Every man's inheritance shall be in the place where his lot falls; according to the tribes of your fathers you shall inherit.

⁸ And of Levi he said, "Let your Thummim and your Urim be with your holy one, whom you did prove at Massah, and with whom you did strive at the waters of Meribah; ⁹ who said to his father and to his mother, I have not seen him; neither did he acknowledge his brothers, nor knew his own children: For they have observed your word, and kept your covenant. ¹⁰ They shall teach Jacob your judgments, and Israel your law: They shall put incense before you, and whole burnt sacrifice on your altar. ¹¹ Bless, LORD, his substance, and accept the work of his hands; smite through the loins of those that rise against him, and of those that hate him, that they rise not again.

¹ Then came near the heads of the fathers of the Levites to Eleazar the priest, and to Joshua the son of Nun, and to the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel;

¹³ For I do not mean that other men are eased, and you burdened: ¹⁴ But by an equality, that now at this time your abundance may be a supply for their lack, that their abundance may also be a supply for your lack: That there may be equality:

³⁴ when you be come into the land of Canaan, which I give to you for a possession, and I put the plague of leprosy in a house of the land of your possession;

² speak to the children of Israel, and say to them, When you come into the land which I give you, then shall the land keep a Sabbath to the LORD.

¹ When the LORD your God has cut off the nations, whose land the LORD your God gives you, and you succeed them, and dwell in their cities, and in their houses; ² you shall separate three cities for you in the midst of your land, which the LORD your God gives you to possess it. ³ You shall prepare you a way, and divide the borders of your land, which the LORD your God gives you to inherit, into three parts, that every slayer may flee thither. ⁴ And this is the case of the slayer, which shall flee thither, that he may live: Whoever kills his neighbor ignorantly, whom he hated not in time past; ⁵ as when a man goes into the wood with his neighbor to hew wood, and his hand fetches a stroke with the ax to cut down the tree, and the head slips from the helve, and lights on his neighbor, that he die; he shall flee to one of those cities, and live: ⁶ Lest the avenger of the blood pursue the slayer, while his heart is hot, and overtake him, because the way is long, and slay him; whereas he was not worthy of death, inasmuch as he hated him not in time past. ⁷ Why I command you, saying, "You shall separate three cities for you. ⁸ And if the LORD your God enlarge your coast, as he has sworn to your fathers, and give you all the land which he promised to give to your fathers; ⁹ if you shall keep all these commandments to do them, which I command you this day, to love the LORD your God, and to walk ever in his ways; then you shall add three cities more for you, beside these three: ¹⁰ That innocent blood be not shed in your land, which the LORD your God gives you for an inheritance, and so blood be upon you. ¹¹ But if any man hate his neighbor, and lie in wait for him, and rise up against him, and smite him mortally that he die, and flees into one of these cities: ¹² Then the elders of his city shall send and fetch him there, and deliver him into the hand of the avenger of blood, that he may die. ¹³ Your eye shall not pity him, but you shall put away the guilt of innocent blood from Israel, that it may go well with you.

² speak to the children of Israel, saying, "Appoint out for you cities of refuge, whereof I spoke to you by the hand of Moses:

¹⁹ The revenger of blood himself shall slay the murderer: When he meets him, he shall slay him.

²⁴ Then the congregation shall judge between the slayer and the revenger of blood according to these judgments: ²⁵ And the congregation shall deliver the slayer out of the hand of the revenger of blood, and the congregation shall restore him to the city of his refuge, where he had fled: And he shall abide in it to the death of the high priest, which was anointed with the holy oil. ²⁶ But if the slayer shall at any time come outside the border of the city of his refuge, where he had fled; ²⁷ and the revenger of blood find him outside the borders of the city of his refuge, and the revenger of blood kill the slayer; he shall not be guilty of blood:

⁶ Lest the avenger of the blood pursue the slayer, while his heart is hot, and overtake him, because the way is long, and slay him; whereas he was not worthy of death, inasmuch as he hated him not in time past.

¹¹ But if any man hate his neighbor, and lie in wait for him, and rise up against him, and smite him mortally that he die, and flees into one of these cities: ¹² Then the elders of his city shall send and fetch him there, and deliver him into the hand of the avenger of blood, that he may die.

⁹ These were the cities appointed for all the children of Israel, and for the stranger that sojourns among them, that whoever kills any person at unawares might flee thither, and not die by the hand of the avenger of blood, until he stood before the congregation.

⁷ And behold, the whole family is risen against your handmaid, and they said, "Deliver him that smote his brother, that we may kill him, for the life of his brother whom he slew; and we will destroy the heir also: And so they shall quench my coal which is left, and shall not leave to my husband neither name nor remainder on the earth.

⁴⁹ One law shall be to him that is home-born, And to the stranger that sojourns among you."

²² You shall have one manner of law, as well for the stranger, as for one of your own country: For I am the LORD your God.

¹⁶ One law and one manner shall be for you, and for the stranger that sojourns with you.

²⁹ Is He the God of the Jews only? Is He not also the God of the Gentiles? Yes, of the Gentiles also:

²⁸ There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond-servant nor free, there is neither male nor female: For you are all one in Christ Jesus.

⁵ And surely your blood of your lives I will require; at the hand of every beast I will require it, and at the hand of man; at the hand of every man's brother I will require the life of man. ⁶ Whoever sheds man's blood, by man his blood shall be shed: For He made man in the image of God.

¹² He that smites a man, so that he dies, shall surely be put to death. ¹³ And if a man does not lie in wait, but God delivers him into his hand; then I will appoint you a place where he shall flee. ¹⁴ But if a man comes presumptuously upon his neighbor, to slay him with guile; you shall take him from My altar, that he may die.

¹⁷ And he that kills any man shall surely be put to death.

²² But if he thrust him suddenly without enmity, or have cast on him anything without laying of wait, ²³ or with any stone, with which a man may die, seeing him not, and cast it on him, that he die, and was not his enemy, neither sought his harm: ²⁴ Then the congregation shall judge between the slayer and the revenger of blood according to these judgments:

³⁰ Whoever kills any person, the murderer shall be put to death by the mouth of witnesses: But one witness shall not testify against any person to cause him to die. ³¹ Moreover you shall take no satisfaction for the life of a murderer, which is guilty of death: But he shall surely be put to death. ³² And you shall take no satisfaction for him that is fled to the city of his refuge, that he should come again to dwell in the land, until the death of the priest. ³³ So you shall not pollute the land in which you are: For blood it defiles the land: And the land cannot be cleansed of the blood that is shed in it, but by the blood of him that shed it.

¹⁸ And if men strive together, and one smites another with a stone, or with his fist, and he does not die, but keeps his bed:another; or, his neighbor

¹² And they shall be to you cities for refuge from the avenger; that the manslayer die not, until he stand before the congregation in judgment.

²¹ or in enmity smite him with his hand, that he die: He that smote him shall surely be put to death; for he is a murderer: The revenger of blood shall slay the murderer, when he meets him.

²⁴ Then the congregation shall judge between the slayer and the revenger of blood according to these judgments:

²⁷ and the revenger of blood find him outside the borders of the city of his refuge, and the revenger of blood kill the slayer; he shall not be guilty of blood:

¹² Then the elders of his city shall send and fetch him there, and deliver him into the hand of the avenger of blood, that he may die.

³ That the slayer that kills any person unawares and unwittingly may flee thither: And they shall be your refuge from the avenger of blood.

⁵ And if the avenger of blood pursue after him, then they shall not deliver the slayer up into his hand; because he smote his neighbor unwittingly, and hated him not beforetime.

⁵ But to Cain and to his offering He did not have respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.

⁸ And Cain talked with Abel his brother: And it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.

¹¹ But if any man hate his neighbor, and lie in wait for him, and rise up against him, and smite him mortally that he die, and flees into one of these cities:

¹⁰ And it came to pass on the next day, that the evil spirit from God came upon Saul, and he prophesied in the midst of the house: And David played with his hand, as at other times: And there was a javelin in Saul's hand. ¹¹ And Saul cast the javelin; for he said, "I will smite David with it, even to the wall." And David evaded out of his presence twice.

²⁵ And Saul said, "Thus you shall say to David, 'The king does not desire any dowry, but a hundred foreskins of the Philistines, to be avenged of the king's enemies.' " But Saul thought to make David fall by the hand of the Philistines.

⁹ And the evil spirit from the LORD was upon Saul, as he sat in his house with his javelin in his hand: And David played with his hand. ¹⁰ And Saul sought to smite David with the javelin, even to the wall: But he slipped away out of Saul's presence, and he smote the javelin into the wall: And David fled, and escaped that night. ¹¹ Saul also sent messengers to David's house, to watch him, and to slay him in the morning: And Michal David's wife told him, saying, "If you do not save your life tonight, tomorrow you shall be slain." ¹² So Michal let David down through a window: And he went, and fled, and escaped.

¹ And David fled from Naioth in Ramah, and came and said before Jonathan, "What have I done? What is my iniquity? And what is my sin before your father, that he seeks my life?"

⁷ And it was told Saul that David had come to Keilah. And Saul said, "God has delivered him into my hand; for he is shut in, by entering into a town that has gates and bars." ⁸ And Saul called all the people together to war, to go down to Keilah, to besiege David and his men. ⁹ And David knew that Saul secretly practiced mischief against him; and he said to Abiathar the priest, "Bring here the ephod."

¹¹ Moreover, my father, see, yes, see the skirt of your robe in my hand: For in that I cut off the skirt of your robe, and I did not kill you, know and see that there is neither evil nor transgression in my hand, and I have not sinned against you; yet you hunt my soul to take it.

²⁷ And when Abner was returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside in the gate to speak with him quietly, and smote him there under the fifth rib, that he died, for the blood of Asahel his brother.

²² And Absalom spoke to his brother Amnon neither good nor bad: For Absalom hated Amnon, because he had forced his sister Tamar.

²⁸ Now Absalom had commanded his servants, saying, "Mark you now when Amnon's heart is merry with wine, and when I say to you, Smite Amnon; then kill him, fear not: Have I not commanded you? Be courageous, and be valiant. ²⁹ And the servants of Absalom did to Amnon as Absalom had commanded. Then all the king's sons arose, and every man got him up on his mule, and fled.

¹⁰ But Amasa took no heed to the sword that was in Joab's hand: So he smote him therewith in the fifth rib, and shed out his bowels to the ground, and smote him not again; and he died. So Joab and Abishai his brother pursued after Sheba the son of Bichri.

⁵ Moreover you know also what Joab the son of Zeruiah did to me, and what he did to the two captains of the hosts of Israel, to Abner the son of Ner, and to Amasa the son of Jether, whom he slew, and shed the blood of war in peace, and put the blood of war on his girdle that was about his loins, and in his shoes that were on his feet. ⁶ Do therefore according to your wisdom, and let not his hoar head go down to the grave in peace.

³¹ And the king said to him, "Do as he has said, "and fall upon him, and bury him; that you may take away the innocent blood, which Joab shed, from me, and from the house of my father. ³² And the LORD shall return his blood on his own head, who fell on two men more righteous and better than he, and slew them with the sword, my father David not knowing of it, to wit, Abner the son of Ner, captain of the host of Israel, and Amasa the son of Jether, captain of the host of Judah. ³³ Their blood shall therefore return on the head of Joab, and on the head of his seed forever: But on David, and on his seed, and on his house, and on his throne, shall there be peace forever from the LORD.

⁷ His mouth is full of cursing and deceit and fraud: Under his tongue is mischief and vanity. ⁸ He sits in the lurking places of the villages: In the secret places he murders the innocent: His eyes are privately set against the poor. ⁹ He lies in wait secretly as a lion in his den: He lies in wait to catch the poor: He does catch the poor, when he draws him into his net. ¹⁰ He crouches, and humbles himself, that the poor may fall by his strong ones.

² For lo, the wicked bend their bow, they make ready their arrow upon the string, that they may privately shoot at the upright in heart.

⁷ For without cause they have hid their net in a pit for me, and without cause they have dug for my soul. ⁸ Let destruction come upon him unexpectedly; and let his net that he has hid catch himself: Into that very destruction let him fall.

⁴ My soul is among lions: And I lie even among those that are set on fire, even the sons of men, whose teeth are spears and arrows, and their tongue a sharp sword. ⁵ Be exalted, O God, above the heavens; let Your glory be above all the earth. ⁶ They have prepared a net for my steps; my soul is bowed down: They have dug a pit before me, into the midst of which they themselves have fallen. Selah.

¹⁸ And they lay in wait for their own blood; they lurk privately for their own lives. ¹⁹ So are the ways of everyone that is greedy of gain; which takes away the life of its owners.

²⁴ He that hates conceals with his lips, and lays up deceit within himself;

¹⁷ A man that does violence to the blood of any person shall flee to the pit; let no man hold him up.

¹⁹ Therefore Herodias had a quarrel against him, and would have killed him; but she could not:

²⁴ Now she went forth, and said to her mother, "What shall I ask?" And she said, "The head of John the Baptist." ²⁵ And she came in immediately with haste to the king, and asked it, saying, "I desire that without delay you give me the head of John the Baptist on a platter." ²⁶ And the king was exceedingly sorry; yet for his oath's sake, and for the sakes of those who sat with him, he would not reject her request.

²⁹ and rose up, and thrust Him out of the city, and led Him to the edge of the hill on which their city was built, that they might throw Him down headfirst.

³ and abode there three months. And when the Jews laid in wait for him, as he was about to sail into Syria, he purposed to return through Macedonia.

²¹ But do not yield to them: For more than forty men lie in wait for him, which have bound themselves with an oath, that they will neither eat nor drink until they have killed him: And now they are ready, awaiting a promise from you."

¹¹ then you shall appoint you cities to be cities of refuge for you; that the slayer may flee thither, which kills any person at unawares.

⁷ Then you shall take the anointing oil, and pour it upon his head, and anoint him.

³ If the priest that is anointed do sin according to the sin of the people; then let him bring for his sin, which he has sinned, a young bull without blemish to the LORD for a sin offering.

¹² And he poured of the anointing oil on Aaron's head, and anointed him, to sanctify him.

¹⁰ And he that is the high priest among his brothers, on whose head the anointing oil was poured, and that is consecrated to put on the garments, shall not uncover his head, nor rend his clothes;

²⁸ Because he should have remained in the city of his refuge until the death of the high priest: But after the death of the high priest the slayer shall return into the land of his possession.

²⁴ being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: ²⁵ Whom God has set out to be a propitiation through faith in His blood, to declare His righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; ²⁶ to declare, I say, at this time His righteousness: That He might be just, and the justifier of him that believes in Jesus.

¹⁶ and that He might reconcile both to God in one body by the cross, having thereby slain the enmity: ¹⁷ And came and preached peace to you who were afar off, and to those that were near. ¹⁸ For through Him we both have access by one Spirit to the Father.

¹⁴ Seeing then that we have a great High Priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. ¹⁵ For we do not have a High Priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. ¹⁶ Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

²⁵ Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those that come to God by Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them. ²⁶ For such a High Priest suited us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens; ²⁷ who needs not offer up daily sacrifice, as those high priests did, first for his own sins, and then for the people's: For this He did once, when He offered up Himself. ²⁸ For the law makes men high priests which have infirmity; but the word of the oath, which was since the law, makes the Son, who is consecrated forevermore.

¹² neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by His own blood He entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us. ¹³ For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of a heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifies for the purifying of the flesh: ¹⁴ How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? ¹⁵ And for this reason He is the Mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, those who are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.

¹⁹ Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, ²⁰ by a new and living way, which He has consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, His flesh; ²¹ and having a High Priest over the house of God; ²² let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.

² If a thief is found breaking in, and is smitten such that he dies, there shall be no blood shed for him.

¹⁰ That innocent blood be not shed in your land, which the LORD your God gives you for an inheritance, and so blood be upon you.

⁴ Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine; no more can you, unless you abide in Me. ⁵ I am the vine, you are the branches: He that abides in Me, and I in him, the same brings forth much fruit: For without Me you can do nothing. ⁶ If a man does not abide in Me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.

²³ Who, when he came, and had seen the grace of God, was glad, and exhorted them all, that with purpose of heart they would cleave to the Lord.

³¹ Paul said to the centurion, and to the soldiers, "Unless these men remain in the ship, you cannot be saved."

¹⁴ For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast to the end;

⁴ For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Spirit, ⁵ and have tasted the good Word of God, and the powers of the world to come, ⁶ if they shall fall away, to renew them again to repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put Him to an open shame. ⁷ For the earth which drinks in the rain that often comes upon it, and brings forth herbs fit for those by whom they are cultivated, receives blessing from God: ⁸ But that which bears thorns and briers is rejected, and is near to being cursed; whose end is to be burned.

¹¹ But Christ became a High Priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building; ¹² neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by His own blood He entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.

¹⁵ And for this reason He is the Mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, those who are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance. ¹⁶ For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator. ¹⁷ For a testament is in force after men are dead: Otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator lives.

²⁶ For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remains no more sacrifice for sins, ²⁷ but a certain fearful expectation of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries. ²⁸ He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses: ²⁹ Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, shall he be thought worthy, who has tread underfoot the Son of God, and has counted the blood of the covenant, with which he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and has extreme malice toward the Spirit of grace? ³⁰ For we know Him that has said, "Vengeance belongs to Me, I will recompense", says the Lord. And again, "The Lord shall judge His people."

³⁹ But we are not of those who draw back to perdition; but of those that believe to the saving of the soul.

¹ Then came the daughters of Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, of the families of Manasseh the son of Joseph: And these are the names of his daughters; Mahlah, Noah, and Hoglah, and Milcah, and Tirzah.

¹¹ And if his father have no brothers, then you shall give his inheritance to his kinsman that is next to him of his family, and he shall possess it: And it shall be to the children of Israel a statute of judgment, as the LORD commanded Moses.

¹⁶ And if he smite him with an instrument of iron, so that he die, he is a murderer: The murderer shall surely be put to death.

⁶ At the mouth of two witnesses, or three witnesses, shall he that is worthy of death be put to death; but at the mouth of one witness he shall not be put to death. ⁷ The hands of the witnesses shall be first on him to put him to death, and afterward the hands of all the people. So you shall put the evil away from among you.

¹⁵ One witness shall not rise up against a man for any iniquity, or for any sin, in any sin that he sins: At the mouth of two witnesses, or at the mouth of three witnesses, shall the matter be established.

¹⁶ But if he will not hear you, then take with you one or two more, that 'by the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.'

⁵¹ "Does our law judge any man, before it hears him, and know what he does?"

¹⁷ It is also written in your law that the testimony of two men is true. ¹⁸ I am One that bears witness of Myself, and the Father which sent Me bears witness of Me."

¹ This is the third time I am coming to you. "By the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established."

¹⁹ Do not receive an accusation against an elder, except before two or three witnesses.

²⁸ He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses:

³ And I will give power to my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy one thousand two hundred and sixty days, clothed in sackcloth."

¹³ And David said to Nathan, "I have sinned against the LORD. And Nathan said to David, "The LORD also has put away your sin; you shall not die.

²⁸ Then tidings came to Joab: For Joab had turned after Adonijah, though he turned not after Absalom. And Joab fled to the tabernacle of the LORD, and caught hold on the horns of the altar. ²⁹ And it was told king Solomon that Joab had fled to the tabernacle of the LORD; and behold, he is by the altar. Then Solomon sent Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, saying, "Go, fall upon him. ³⁰ And Benaiah came to the tabernacle of the LORD, and said to him, "Thus says the king, Come forth. And he said, "No; but I will die here. ¹⁴ Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, You are the God of my salvation: And my tongue shall sing aloud of Your righteousness.

¹² Neither is there salvation in any other: For there is no other name under heaven given among men, by which we must be saved."

²¹ I do not frustrate the grace of God: For if righteousness comes by the law, then Christ died in vain."

¹⁰ For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: For it is written, "Cursed is everyone that does not continue in all things which are written in the book of the law, to do them." ¹¹ But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God is evident: For, "The just shall live by faith." ¹² And the law is not of faith: But, "The man who does them shall live in them." ¹³ Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: For it is written, "Cursed is everyone that hangs on a tree":

²² But the scripture has concluded all are under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to those that believe.

⁹ And they sang a new song, saying, "You are worthy to take the book, and to open its seals: For You were slain, and have redeemed us to God by Your blood out of every tribe, and tongue, and people, and nation;

⁶ Whoever sheds man's blood, by man his blood shall be shed: For He made man in the image of God.

²⁵ And the land is defiled: Therefore I do visit its iniquity on it, and the land itself vomits out her inhabitants.

¹ If one be found slain in the land which the LORD your God gives you to possess it, lying in the field, and it be not known who has slain him: ² Then your elders and your judges shall come forth, and they shall measure to the cities which are all around him that is slain: ³ And it shall be, that the city which is next to the slain man, even the elders of that city shall take a heifer, which has not been worked with, and which has not drawn in the yoke; ⁴ and the elders of that city shall bring down the heifer to a rough valley, which is neither eared nor sown, and shall strike off the heifer's neck there in the valley: ⁵ And the priests the sons of Levi shall come near; for them the LORD your God has chosen to minister to him, and to bless in the name of the LORD; and by their word shall every controversy and every stroke be tried: ⁶ And all the elders of that city, that are next to the slain man, shall wash their hands over the heifer that is beheaded in the valley: ⁷ And they shall answer and say, "Our hands have not shed this blood, neither have our eyes seen it. ⁸ Be merciful, O LORD, to Your people Israel, whom you have redeemed, and do not lay innocent blood to Your people of Israel's charge. And the blood shall be forgiven them.

²³ His body shall not remain all night on the tree, but you shall in any wise bury him that day; (for he that is hanged is accursed of God); that your land be not defiled, which the LORD your God gives you for an inheritance.

²⁶ Notwithstanding, the LORD did not turn from the fierceness of His great wrath, with which His anger was kindled against Judah, because of all the provocations that Manasseh had provoked Him with.

⁴ and also for the innocent blood that he shed: For he filled Jerusalem with innocent blood; which the LORD would not pardon.

²⁸ They also joined themselves to Baal-Peor, and ate the sacrifices of the dead,

³⁸ and shed innocent blood, even the blood of their sons and of their daughters, whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan: And the land was polluted with blood.

²¹ For, behold, the LORD comes out of His place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity: The earth also shall disclose her blood, and will no longer cover her slain.

²⁴ "Son of man, say to her, 'You are the land that is not cleansed, nor rained on in the day of indignation.' ²⁵ There is a conspiracy of her prophets in the midst of her, like a roaring lion ravening the prey; they have devoured souls; they have taken the treasure and precious things; they have made her many widows in the midst of her. ²⁶ Her priests have violated My law, and have profaned My holy things: They have put no difference between the holy and profane, neither have they showed difference between the unclean and the clean, and have hid their eyes from My Sabbaths, and I am profaned among them. ²⁷ Her princes in the middle of her are like wolves ravening the prey, to shed blood, and to destroy souls, to get dishonest gain.

² By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out, and blood touches blood. ³ Therefore the land shall mourn, and everyone that dwells in it shall languish, with the wild beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven; yes, the fish of the sea also shall be taken away.

¹¹ Now also many nations are gathered against you, that say, "Let her be defiled, and let our eye look upon Zion."

³¹ Therefore you are witnesses against yourselves, that you are the children of those who killed the prophets. ³² Fill up then the measure of your fathers. ³³ You serpents, you generation of vipers, how can you escape the damnation of hell? ³⁴ Therefore, behold, I send to you prophets, wise men, and scribes: And some of them you shall kill and crucify; and some of them you shall scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city: ³⁵ That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom you slew between the temple and the altar.

⁵⁰ That the blood of all the prophets, which was shed from the foundation of the world, may be required of this generation; ⁵¹ from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zacharias, who perished between the altar and the temple: Truly I say to you, It shall be required of this generation.

⁸ And let them make Me a sanctuary; that I may dwell among them.

⁴⁵ And I will dwell among the children of Israel, and will be their God. ⁴⁶ And they shall know that I am the LORD their God, that brought them forth out of the land of Egypt, that I may dwell among them: I am the LORD their God."

²⁴ Defile not you yourselves in any of these things: For in all these the nations are defiled which I cast out before you: ²⁵ And the land is defiled: Therefore I do visit its iniquity on it, and the land itself vomits out her inhabitants.

²⁴ But I have said to you, You shall inherit their land, and I will give it to you to possess it, a land that flows with milk and honey: I am the LORD your God, which have separated you from other people. ²⁵ You shall therefore put difference between clean beasts and unclean, and between unclean fowls and clean: And you shall not make your souls abominable by beast, or by fowl, or by any manner of living thing that creeps on the ground, which I have separated from you as unclean. ²⁶ And you shall be holy to me: For I the LORD am holy, and have severed you from other people, that you should be mine.

³ Both male and female shall you put out, outside the camp shall you put them; that they defile not their camps, in the middle whereof I dwell.

¹³ And I will dwell among the children of Israel, and will not forsake my people Israel.

¹⁴ "This is My rest forever: Here I will dwell; for I have desired it.

²¹ Blessed be the LORD out of Zion, Which dwells at Jerusalem. Praise the LORD.

¹² "Do not answer, 'A conspiracy', to all those of whom this people shall suppose, 'A conspiracy'; neither should you fear their terribleness, nor be afraid.

¹⁵ For thus says the high and lofty One who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also who is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.

³ They shall not dwell in the LORD's land; but Ephraim shall return to Egypt, and they shall eat unclean things in Assyria.

¹⁶ And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God; as God has said: "I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people." ¹⁷ Therefore "Come out from among them, and be separate, says the Lord, and do not touch the unclean thing; and I will receive you",

³ And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, "Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself shall be with them, and be their God.

²⁷ And there shall in no case enter into it anything that defiles, neither anything that works abomination, or makes a lie: But those which are written in the Lamb's Book of Life.
