²³ Now therefore put away, he said, the strange gods which are among you, and incline your heart to the LORD God of Israel.

² Then Jacob said to his household, and to all that were with him, "Put away the strange gods that are among you, and be clean, and change your garments: ³ And let us arise, and go up to Bethel; and I will make an altar to God there, who answered me in the day of my distress, and was with me in the way which I went." ⁴ And they gave to Jacob all the strange gods which were in their hand, and all their earrings which were in their ears; and Jacob hid them under the oak which was by Shechem.

²³ You shall not make with me gods of silver, neither shall you make for yourself gods of gold.

¹⁴ Now therefore fear the LORD, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: And put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve you the LORD.

¹⁵ And the children of Israel said to the LORD, We have sinned: Do you to us whatever seems good to you; deliver us only, we implore you, this day. ¹⁶ And they put away the strange gods from among them, and served the LORD: And his soul was grieved for the misery of Israel.

³ And Samuel spoke to all the house of Israel, saying, "If you return to the LORD with all your hearts, then put away the strange gods and Ashtaroth from among you, and prepare your hearts to the LORD, and serve Him only: And He will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines." ⁴ Then the children of Israel put away Baalim and Ashtaroth, and served the LORD only.

⁵⁸ That he may incline our hearts to him, to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commandments, and his statutes, and his judgments, which he commanded our fathers.

³⁶ Incline my heart to Your testimonies, and not to covetousness.

⁴ Incline not my heart to any evil thing, to practice wicked works with men that work iniquity: And let me not eat of their delicacies.

² so that you incline your ear to wisdom, and apply your heart to understanding;

² Take with you words, and turn to the LORD: Say to Him, "Take away all iniquity, and receive us graciously: So will we render the calves of our lips. ³ Asshur shall not save us; we will not ride upon horses: Neither will we say any more to the work of our hands, 'You are our gods': For in You the fatherless finds mercy."

⁸ Ephraim shall say, 'What have I to do with idols any more?' I have heard him, and observed him: I am like a green fir tree. From Me your fruit is found."

¹⁹ What am I saying then? That an idol is anything, or what is offered in sacrifice to idols is anything? ²⁰ Rather, I am saying that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: And I would not intend that you should have fellowship with devils. ²¹ You cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: You cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils.

¹⁶ And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God; as God has said: "I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people." ¹⁷ Therefore "Come out from among them, and be separate, says the Lord, and do not touch the unclean thing; and I will receive you", ¹⁸ "And will be a Father to you, and you shall be My sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty."

²⁸ Therefore, we are receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, by which we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear: ²⁹ For our God is a consuming fire.
