⁸ For this reason at that time certain Chaldeans came near, and accused the Jews.

¹² Be it known to the king, that the Jews which came up from you to us have come to Jerusalem, building the rebellious and the bad city, and have set up its walls, and joined the foundations. ¹³ Be it known now to the king, that, if this city be built, and the walls set up again, then will they not pay toll, tribute, and custom, and so you shall damage the revenue of the kings. ¹⁴ Now because we have maintenance from the king's palace, and it was not meet for us to see the king's dishonor, therefore have we sent and certified the king; ¹⁵ that search may be made in the book of the records of your fathers: So shall you find in the book of the records, and know that this city is a rebellious city, and hurtful to kings and provinces, and that they have moved sedition within the same of old time: For which cause was this city destroyed. ¹⁶ We certify the king that, if this city be built again, and its walls set up, by this means you shall have no portion on this side the river.

⁶ And he thought scorn to lay hands on Mordecai alone; for they had showed him the people of Mordecai: Therefore Haman sought to destroy all the Jews that were throughout the whole kingdom of Ahasuerus, even the people of Mordecai.

⁸ And Haman said to king Ahasuerus, "There is a certain people scattered abroad and dispersed among the people in all the provinces of your kingdom; and their laws are diverse from all people; neither do they keep the king's laws: Therefore it is not for the king's profit to endure them. ⁹ If it please the king, let it be written that they may be destroyed: And I will pay ten thousand talents of silver to the hands of those that have the charge of the business, to bring it into the king's treasuries."

¹⁰ The Chaldeans answered before the king, and said, "There is not a man upon the earth that can show the king's matter: Therefore there is no king, lord, nor ruler, that asked such things of any magician, or astrologer, or Chaldean.

¹² Then they came near, and spoke before the king concerning the king's decree; "Have you not signed a decree, that every man who shall ask a petition of any God or man within thirty days, except of you, O king, shall be cast into the den of lions?" The king answered and said, "The thing is true, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which does not alter." ¹³ Then they answered and said before the king, "That Daniel, who is of the children of the captivity of Judah, does not regard you, O king, nor the decree that you have signed, but makes his petition three times a day."

²⁰ And brought them to the magistrates, saying, "These men, being Jews, exceedingly trouble our city, ²¹ and teach customs which are not lawful for us to receive, neither to observe, being Romans." ²² Then the multitude rose up together against them: And the magistrates tore off their clothes, and commanded to beat them.

⁶ But when they did not find them, they dragged Jason and certain brethren to the rulers of the city, crying out, "These that have turned the world upside down have come here also; ⁷ Whom Jason has received: And all of them do contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, one Jesus." ⁸ And they troubled the people and the rulers of the city, when they heard these things.

²² But we desire to hear from you what you think: For concerning this sect, we know that it is spoken against everywhere."

³ For the years past of our life may suffice for us to have worked the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revelries, banquetings, and abominable idolatries: ⁴ In which they think it is strange that you do not run with them to the same riotous excesses, speaking evil of you:
