⁷ But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit with altogether.

¹⁴ For the kingdom of heaven is like a man travelling into a far country, who called his own servants, and delivered his goods to them. ¹⁵ And to one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every man according to his distinct ability; and immediately took his journey.1 talent is 750 ounces of silver; hence five talents is ~234.4 pounds of silver, two talents is ~93.8 pounds of silver, and one talent is ~46.9 pounds of silver. ¹⁶ Then he who had received the five talents went and traded with the same, and made with them another five talents. ¹⁷ And likewise he who had received two, he also gained another two. ¹⁸ But he who had received one went and dug in the earth, and hid his lord's money. ¹⁹ After a long time the lord of those servants came, and settled accounts with them. ²⁰ And so he who had received five talents came and brought another five talents, saying, 'Lord, you delivered to me five talents: Behold, I have gained five more talents besides them. ²¹ His lord said to him, 'Well done, you good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things: Enter into the joy of your lord.' ²² He also who had received two talents came and said, 'Lord, you delivered to me two talents: Behold, I have gained two other talents besides them.' ²³ His lord said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things: Enter into the joy of your lord.' ²⁴ Then he who had received the one talent came and said, 'Lord, I knew that you are a hard man, reaping where you have not sown, and gathering where you have not scattered seed: ²⁵ And I was afraid, and went and hid your talent in the earth: Look, there you have what is yours.' ²⁶ His lord answered and said to him, 'You wicked and slothful servant, you knew that I reap where I have not sown, and gather where I have not scattered seed: ²⁷ Therefore you ought to have put my money with the exchangers, and then at my coming I should have received back my own with interest. ²⁸ Therefore take the talent from him, and give it to him who has ten talents. ²⁹ For to everyone that has, more shall be given, and he shall have abundance: But from him who does not have, even that which he has shall be taken away. ³⁰ And cast the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.'

⁶ Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith; ⁷ or ministry, let us attend to our ministering: Or he that teaches, in teaching; ⁸ or he that exhorts, in exhortation; he that gives, let him do it with simplicity; he that rules, with diligence; he that shows mercy, with cheerfulness.

⁵ I would like that you all spoke with tongues, but far more that you prophesied: For greater is he that prophesies than he that speaks with tongues, unless he interprets, that the church may receive edification.

¹² Even so you, as much as you are zealous for spiritual gifts, seek that you may excel to the edifying of the church.

¹⁷ For you truly give thanks well, but the other is not edified.

¹⁹ Yet in the church I would rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I may teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue.

²² Therefore tongues are for a sign, not to those that believe, but to unbelievers: Moreover prophesying does not serve unbelievers, but is for those who believe. ²³ If therefore the whole church comes together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that you are beside yourselves? ²⁴ But if all prophesy, and there comes in one that does not believe, or one unlearned, he is convinced by all, he is discerned by all: ²⁵ And in this way the secrets of his heart are made apparent; and so falling down on his face he will worship God, and report that God is truly in you. ²⁶ How is it then, brethren? Whenever you come together, every one of you has a psalm, has a doctrine, has a tongue, has a revelation, has an interpretation. Let all things be done for edification.

⁷ But grace is given to every one of us according to the measure of the gift of Christ. ⁸ Therefore He says: "When He ascended up on high, He led captivity captive, and gave gifts to men." ⁹ (Now that "He ascended", what does it mean but that He also first descended into the lower parts of the earth? ¹⁰ He that descended is also the same that ascended up far above all the heavens, that He might fill all things.) ¹¹ And He gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers; ¹² for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:

¹⁰ As every man has received the gift, even so minister the same to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. ¹¹ If any man speaks, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man ministers, let him do it as with the ability which God gives: That in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be the praise and dominion forever and ever. Amen.
