¹⁹ and called the name of that place––Bethel,––nevertheless, Luz, was the name of the city, aforetime.

⁸ And he moved on from thence towards the hill country, on the east of Bethel, and pitched his tent,––with Bethel on the west, and Ai on the east, and built there an altar to Yahweh, and called on the name of Yahweh.

¹ Then said God unto Jacob, Arise, go up to Bethel, and dwell there,––and make there an altar, to the GOD who appeared unto thee, when thou fleddest from the face of Esau thy brother.

³ Then said Jacob, unto Joseph, GOD Almighty, appeared unto me in Luz, in the land of Canaan,––and blessed me;

²⁹ And he set the one in Bethel,––and, the other, put he in Dan.

¹⁵ Though unchaste art thou, O Israel, let not Judah, become guilty, neither let them enter Gilgal, nor go up to Beth–aven, and [then] swear, By the life of Yahweh!

⁴ Yea he strove against a Messenger, and prevailed, he wept, and made supplication unto him,––At Bethel, he found him, and, there, he spake with us; ⁵ And, Yahweh, is God of host,––Yahweh, is his memorial.
