²³ He said to all: "If any one chooses to come after me, let him disown himself and take up his cross every day and follow me.

³⁸ Whoever does not take his cross and follow after me is not worthy of me. ³⁹ He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for my sake will find it.

²⁶ "If any one comes to me and does not hate his father and his mother and his wife and his children and his brothers and his sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be a disciple of mine. ²⁷ Whoever does not take up his own cross and come after me cannot be a disciple of mine.

²⁵ He who loves his life destroys it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for life eternal. ²⁶ If any one is serving me, let him follow me and where I am there my servant shall be. If any one is serving me, him my Father will honor.

³⁰ And why do we run risks every hour? ³¹ I die every day, I swear it by the boast I make of you and which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord.
