¹⁴ But the synagogue Director, angry because Jesus was healing on the Sabbath, said to the crowd, "There are six days in which work should be done. On those days come and be healed, but not on the Sabbath day."

² When the Pharisees saw it they said, "See, your disciples are doing what is not allowable on the Sabbath."

¹⁰ A man was there with a withered hand. They asked Jesus, "Is it allowable to heal on the Sabbath?" — so that they might have something to accuse him of. ¹¹ He said to them, "What man is there of you who, if he has one sheep, and it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will not lay hold on it and lift it out? ¹² But how much more is a man worth than a sheep! So it is allowable to do good on the Sabbath."

² They watched him to see whether he would heal him on the Sabbath, so that they might have something to say against him. ³ He said to the man with the withered hand, "Stand up in the center." ⁴ Then he said to them, "Is it allowable to do good on the Sabbath or to do harm, to save a life or to kill?" But they kept silent. ⁵ He looked round on them with anger, grieved at the hardness of their hearts, and said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." He stretched the hand out and it was completely restored. ⁶ The Pharisees went out immediately and joined with the Herodians in a plot to put him out of the way.

²² Then came one of the directors of the synagogue, by the name of Jairus, and as soon as he saw Jesus he fell at his feet

⁷ The scribes and Pharisees watched to see whether he would heal him on the Sabbath, wishing to find something to accuse him of.

¹¹ But they were filled with blind fury, and discussed with one another what they could do to Jesus.

⁴¹ There came a man by the name of Jairus — he was a synagogue director. Falling at the feet of Jesus, he begged him to come to his house

³ Jesus said to the lawyers and Pharisees, "Is it allowable to heal on the Sabbath or is it not?" ⁴ They kept quiet. Then taking hold of him he cured him and dismissed him. ⁵ He said to them, "If the son or the ox of any one of you falls into a well on the Sabbath day, will he not at once draw him out?" ⁶ They could not say anything in answer to this.

¹⁵ The man went away and told the Jews that Jesus was the man who had made him well. ¹⁶ On this account the Jews persecuted Jesus because he did such things on the Sabbath.

¹⁴ It was on the Sabbath day that Jesus made the clay and opened his eyes. ¹⁵ The Pharisees in their turn asked him how he received his sight. He said to them, "He put clay on my eyes and I washed and I saw." ¹⁶ Some of the Pharisees said, "This man is not from God because he does not keep the Sabbath." Others said, "How can a man, if he is a sinner, do such signs?" So there was a division among them.

¹⁵ After the reading of the Law and the Prophets, the synagogue directors sent to them saying, "Brethren, if you have any word of encouragement for the people, speak it."

⁸ Crispus, the synagogue Director, believed in the Lord with all his household, and many of the Corinthians when they heard believed and were baptized.

¹⁷ Then they laid hold of Sosthenes, the synagogue Director, and beat him right in front of the judge's seat. But Gallio cared for none of these things.

² For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not an intelligent one.
