16 Alas for you, blind guides! You say, 'Whoever swears by the Temple, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gold of the Temple is bound.'
17 Fools and blind, which is greater, the gold or the Temple that makes the gold holy?
18 You say, 'Whoever swears by the altar, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gift that is on the altar is bound.'
19 You blind, which is greater, the gift or the altar that makes the gift holy?
20 He, then, who swears by the altar swears by it and everything on it,
21 and he who swears by the Temple swears by it and by him who dwells in it,
22 and he who swears by heaven swears by the throne of God and by him who sits upon it.
23 "Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you pay tithes of mint, dill, and carraway and have disregarded the weightier matters of the law — justice and kindness and good faith. These you should have practiced, without neglecting those other things.
24 Blind guides, who strain out a gnat and drink down a camel!
25 Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you cleanse the outside of the cup and the dish, but inside they are full through greed and self-indulgence.
26 Blind Pharisees, cleanse first the inside of your cup so that the outside of it may become clean also.
27 Alas for you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you are like whitewashed tombs which outside appear beautiful, but inside are full of dead men's bones and every kind of uncleanness.
28 So you, too, outwardly appear to men to be righteous, but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.
Luke 11:39-54
39 The Master said to him, "Now you Pharisees cleanse the outside of the cup and the platter, but the inside of you is full of rapacity and wickedness.
40 You foolish men, did not he who made the outside make the inside too?
41 But give the things inside as gifts of mercy and at once all will be clean for you.
42 But alas for you, Pharisees! Because you tithe mint, and rue, and every herb, and pass by justice and the love of God. These things you ought to have practiced, without omitting the others.
43 Alas for you, Pharisees! for you love the first seats in the synagogues and greetings in the market-places.
44 Alas for you! for you are like unmarked graves. The men who walk over them do not know it."
45 One of the lawyers answered him, "Teacher, in saying this you treat us roughly too."
46 He said, "Alas for you lawyers also! for you burden men with burdens hard to bear, and you yourselves do not touch the burdens with one of your fingers.
47 Alas for you! for you build the tombs of the prophets, but your fathers killed them.
48 So you are witnesses and consent to the deeds of your fathers, for they killed them and you build their tombs.
49 Therefore also the Wisdom of God said, 'I will send to them prophets and apostles, and some of them they will kill and some they will persecute.'
50 So the blood of all the prophets which has been shed from the foundation of the world will be required of this generation —
51 from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zachariah who perished between the altar and the House. Yes, I tell you, it will be required of this generation.
52 Alas for you lawyers! because you have taken away the key of knowledge. You yourselves have not entered and you have prevented those who were entering."
53 After he went away from there, the scribes and the Pharisees began to press upon him angrily and cross-question him on many points,
54 laying traps to catch something from his mouth.
John 7:47-52
47 The Pharisees answered them, "Have you also been deluded?
48 Can it be that any one of the rulers or Pharisees has believed in him?
49 But this crowd who do not know the Law are cursed."
50 Nicodemus said to them — he who came to Jesus before — being himself one of them,
51 "Does our Law condemn any man without first hearing from him and learning what he is doing?"
52 They answered him, "Can it be that you too are from Galilee? Examine and see that from Galilee no prophet arises."
