²⁷ for those dwelling in Jerusalem, and their chiefs, this one not having known, also the voices of the prophets, which every sabbath are being read -- having judged him -- did fulfill,

²⁹ And Jesus answering said to them, 'You go astray, not knowing the Writings, nor the power of God;

⁵⁴ How then may the Writings be fulfilled, that thus it behooves to happen?' ⁵⁵ In that hour said Jesus to the multitudes, 'As against a robber you did come forth, with swords and sticks, to take me! Daily with you I was sitting teaching in the temple, and you did not lay hold on me; ⁵⁶ but all this has come to pass, that the Writings of the prophets may be fulfilled;' then all the disciples, having left him, fled.

³⁴ and he said, 'I say to you, Peter, a cock shall not crow to-day, before thrice you may disown knowing me.'

²⁰ how also the chief priests and our rulers did deliver him up to a judgment of death, and crucified him;

²⁴ and certain of those with us went away unto the tomb, and found as even the women said, and him they saw not.' ²⁵ And he said unto them, 'O inconsiderate and slow in heart, to believe on all that the prophets spake! ²⁶ Was it not behooving the Christ these things to suffer, and to enter into his glory?' ²⁷ and having begun from Moses, and from all the prophets, he was expounding to them in all the Writings the things about himself.

⁴⁴ and he said to them, 'These are the words that I spake unto you, being yet with you, that it is necessary for to be fulfilled all the things that are written in the Law of Moses, and the Prophets, and the Psalms, about me.' ⁴⁵ Then opened he up their understanding to understand the Writings,

²⁸ Jesus, therefore, said to them, 'When you may lift up the Son of Man then you will know that I am he; and of myself I do nothing, but according as my Father did teach me, these things I speak;

²¹ but all these things will they do to you, because of my name, because they have not known Him who sent me;

³ and these things they will do to you, because they did not know the Father, nor me.

²⁸ After this, Jesus knowing that all things now have been finished, that the Writing may be fulfilled, said, 'I thirst;' ²⁹ a vessel, therefore, was placed full of vinegar, and they having filled a sponge with vinegar, and having put it around a hyssop stalk, did put it to his mouth; ³⁰ when, therefore, Jesus received the vinegar, he said, 'It has been finished;' and having bowed the head, gave up the spirit.

³⁶ For these things came to pass, that the Writing may be fulfilled, 'A bone of him shall not be broken;' ³⁷ and again another Writing said, 'They shall look to him whom they did pierce.'

¹⁷ 'And now, brethren, I have known that through ignorance you did it, as also your rulers;

¹⁴ and they having gone through from Perga, came to Antioch of Pisidia, and having gone into the synagogue on the sabbath-day, they sat down, ¹⁵ and after the reading of the law and of the prophets, the chief men of the synagogue sent unto them, saying, 'Men, brethren, if there be a word in you of exhortation unto the people -- say on.'

²¹ for Moses from former generations in every city has those preaching him -- in the synagogues every sabbath being read.'

²² 'Having obtained, therefore, help from God, till this day, I have stood witnessing both to small and to great, saying nothing besides the things that both the prophets and Moses spake of as about to come, ²³ that the Christ is to suffer, whether first by a rising from the dead, he is about to proclaim light to the people and to the nations.'

²³ and having appointed him a day, they came, more of them unto him, to the lodging, to whom he was expounding, testifying fully the reign of God, persuading them also of the things concerning Jesus, both from the law of Moses, and the prophets, from morning till evening,

⁸ according as it has been written, 'God gave to them a spirit of deep sleep, eyes not to see, and ears not to hear,' -- unto this very day, ⁹ and David says, 'Let their table become for a snare, and for a trap, and for a stumbling-block, and for a recompense to them; ¹⁰ let their eyes be darkened -- not to behold, and their back do You always bow down.'

²⁵ For I do not wish you to be ignorant, brethren, of this secret -- that you may not be wise in your own conceits -- that hardness in part to Israel has happened till the fulness of the nations may come in;

⁸ which no one of the rulers of this age did know, for if they had known, the Lord of the glory they would not have crucified;

¹⁴ but their minds were hardened, for unto this day the same vail at the reading of the Old Covenant does remain unwithdrawn -- which in Christ is being made useless --

⁴ in whom the god of this age did blind the minds of the unbelieving, that there does not shine forth to them the enlightening of the good news of the glory of the Christ, who is the image of God;

¹³ who before was speaking evil, and persecuting, and insulting, but I found kindness, because, being ignorant, I did it in unbelief,
