²⁴ No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.

¹⁰ Then Jesus said to him, Begone, Satan: for it is written, You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve.

⁹ And I say to you, Make friends for yourselves using worldly wealth; that, when it fails, they may receive you into the eternal habitations.

¹¹ Therefore, if you have not been faithful with worldly wealth, who will entrust you with true riches?

¹³ No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.

¹⁶ Do you not know that if you yield yourselves as slaves to obey someone, you are slaves of the one you obey; whether of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness? ¹⁷ But thanks be to God, that you who were once the slaves of sin, have obeyed from the heart that standard of teaching which was entrusted to you. ¹⁸ Being then set free from sin, you became the slaves of righteousness. ¹⁹ I speak after the manner of men, because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as you have yielded your members as slaves to uncleanness and to ever increasing iniquity; so now yield your members as slaves to righteousness, leading to holiness. ²⁰ For when you were the slaves of sin, you were free from the control of righteousness. ²¹ But what benefit did you get from those things of which you are now ashamed? for the result of those things is death. ²² But now, having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God, you gain the benefit that leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life.

¹⁰ Do I now seek the favour of men, or of God? or do I seek to please men? if I were still pleasing men, I should not be a servant of Christ.

⁹ But those who want to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful desires, which plunge men into ruin and destruction. ¹⁰ For the love of money is the root of all sorts of evil: and some, by craving it, have wandered from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

¹⁷ Command those who are rich in this world not to be arrogant, nor to trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who richly gives us all things to enjoy.

¹⁰ For Demas, having loved this present world, has forsaken me and has departed to Thessalonica; Crescens has gone to Galatia, and Titus to Dalmatia.

⁴ You adulteresses, do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? whoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.

¹⁵ Do not love the world, nor the things in the world. If any man loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. ¹⁶ For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
