¹⁰ For his letters, they say, are weighty and powerful; but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech contemptible.

¹⁷ For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with eloquent words of wisdom, lest the cross of Christ should be emptied of its power.

²¹ For since, in the wisdom of God, the world by its wisdom did not come to know God, it pleased God through the foolishness of our preaching to save those who believe.

¹ And when I came to you, brethren, I did not come with lofty speech or wisdom as I declared to you the testimony of God. ² For I determined not to know anything among you, except Jesus Christ, and him crucified. ³ And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling. ⁴ And my speech and my preaching were not with persuasive words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power:

¹ Now I, Paul, urge you by the meekness and gentleness of Christ, I who am meek in your presence, but bold when I am absent from you.

⁶ But though I am unskilled in speech, yet I am not in knowledge; we have made this plain to you in all things.

⁵ Of such a man I will boast: yet of myself I will not boast, except of my weaknesses. ⁶ If I should desire to boast, I shall not be a fool; for I will speak the truth: but I refrain, lest any man should think of me beyond that which he sees in me, or hears from me. ⁷ And lest I should exalt myself beyond measure through the abundance of revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, a messenger from Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted beyond measure. ⁸ I begged the Lord thrice, that this might depart from me. ⁹ And he said to me, My grace is sufficient for you: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Therefore, most gladly will I boast in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

¹³ You know it was because of infirmity of the flesh that I first preached the gospel to you. ¹⁴ And though my fleshly condition was a trial for you, you did not despise or reject me; but received me as an angel from God, as Christ Jesus himself.
