⁹ But those who want to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful desires, which plunge men into ruin and destruction.

²² The seed sown among the thorns is he who hears the word; and the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becomes unfruitful.

²² But when the young man heard that, he went away sorrowful: for he had much property.

¹⁵ And said to them, What will you give me if I deliver him to you? And they paid him thirty pieces of silver.

³ Then Judas, who had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented, and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, ⁴ Saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed innocent blood. And they said, What is that to us? see to that yourself. ⁵ And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself.

¹⁹ And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lust for other things enter in, and choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.

³⁵ For as a snare shall it come upon all those who live on the face of the whole earth.

⁴ While it was unsold, was it not your own? and even after it was sold, was not the money in your own power? why have you conceived this deed in your heart? you have not lied to men, but to God. ⁵ On hearing these words Ananias fell down and died: and great fear came on all those who heard these things.

²⁰ But Peter said to him, Your silver perish with you, because you thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money.

²² Then put off the old man, which belongs to your former life, which is corrupt through deceitful lusts;

⁹ Understanding this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers,

⁷ Moreover, he must have a good reputation among those who are outside; lest he fall into disgrace and the snare of the devil.

²⁶ And that they may come to their senses and escape the snare of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will.

¹ Come now, you rich men, weep and howl for the miseries that shall come upon you. ² Your riches have rotted, and your garments are moth-eaten. ³ Your gold and silver is corroded; and their rust shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as if it were fire. You have heaped treasure together in the last days. ⁴ Behold, the wages of the labourers who have reaped your fields, which you withheld, cry out against you: and the cries of those who reaped have been heard by the ears of the Lord of hosts.

³ And in greed they shall exploit you with false words: the judgment against them from of old does not linger, and their condemnation does not slumber.

¹⁵ Who have forsaken the right way, and have gone astray, following the way of Balaam the son of Beor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness; ¹⁶ But was rebuked for his iniquity: a dumb donkey speaking with a man's voice restrained the madness of the prophet.

¹⁵ Do not love the world, nor the things in the world. If any man loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. ¹⁶ For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. ¹⁷ And the world passes away, along with its lusts: but he who does the will of God abides forever.

¹¹ Woe to them! for they have gone the way of Cain, and for profit have plunged into the error of Balaam, and have perished in the rebellion of Korah.
