³ For this is he that was spoken of through Isaiah the prophet, saying, "The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths!" ⁴ as it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet: "The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths! ⁵ Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be made low; and the crooked places shall be made straight, and the rough ways smooth; ⁶ and all flesh shall see the salvation of God."

¹⁵ John beareth witness of him, and crieth, saying, This was he of whom I said, He that cometh after me hath gone before me; for he was before me.

¹⁹ And this is the witness of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem, to ask him, Who art thou? ²⁰ And he declared, and did not deny; and he declared, I am not the Christ. ²¹ And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elijah? And he said, I am not. Art thou the prophet? And he answered, No. ²² They said therefore to him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to those who sent us; what sayest thou of thyself? ²³ He said, I am "a voice of one crying aloud in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord," as said Isaiah the prophet. ²⁴ And they were sent from the Pharisees; ²⁵ and they asked him and said to him, Why then dost thou baptize, if thou art not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the prophet? ²⁶ John answered them, saying, I baptize in water. There standeth one among you whom ye know not, ²⁷ he who cometh after me, the latchet of whose sandal I am not worthy to loose. ²⁸ These things took place in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing. ²⁹ The next day he seeth Jesus coming to him, and saith, Behold, the Lamb of God, who taketh away the sin of the world! ³⁰ This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man, who hath gone before me; for he was before me. ³¹ And I knew him not; but that he might be made manifest to Israel, therefore I came baptizing in water. ³² And John bore witness, saying, I have seen the Spirit descending as a dove from heaven, and it abode upon him. ³³ And I knew him not; but he who sent me to baptize in water, the same said to me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending and abiding on him, he it is that baptizeth in the Holy Spirit. ³⁴ And I have seen and have borne witness, that this is the Son of God.

²⁸ Ye yourselves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but that I was sent before that man. ²⁹ He that hath the bride is the bridegroom; but the friend of the bridegroom, who standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegrooms voice. This my joy then hath become full. ³⁰ He must increase, but I must decrease. ³¹ He that cometh from above is above all. He that is from the earth is earthly, and speaketh earthly things; he that cometh from heaven ³² testifieth what he hath seen and heard; and no one receiveth his testimony. ³³ He that hath received his testimony hath set his seal that God is true. ³⁴ For he whom God sent speaketh the words of God; for he giveth not the Spirit by measure. ³⁵ The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand. ³⁶ He that believeth in the Son hath everlasting life; and he that disobeyeth the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abideth on him.
