⁹ And to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised all others, he spoke this parable:

³⁹ And the Pharisee who had invited him, when he saw this, said within himself, This man, if he were a prophet, would know who, and what sort of woman, this is that toucheth him; for she is a sinner.

²⁹ But he, wishing to justify himself, said to Jesus, And who is my neighbor?

² And the Pharisees and the scribes murmured, saying, This man receiveth sinners, and eateth with them.

²⁹ And he answering said to his father, Lo! for so many years have I served thee, and never transgressed thy command; and yet to me thou never gavest a kid, that I might make merry with my friends. ³⁰ But as soon as this thy son came, who devoured thy living with harlots, thou didst kill for him the fatted calf.

¹⁵ And he said to them, Ye are they who justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts; for that which is highly exalted among men is an abomination before God.

¹¹ The Pharisee stood and prayed by himself thus: O God, I thank thee that I am not as the rest of men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican.

⁷ And when they saw it, they all murmured, saying, He hath gone in to be the guest of a sinner.

⁴⁷ The Pharisees answered them, Have ye also been deceived? ⁴⁸ Hath any one of the rulers believed in him? or of the Pharisees? ⁴⁹ but this multitude that know not the Law are accursed.

⁴⁸ The Jews answered and said to him, Say we not well, that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a demon?

²⁸ They reviled him, and said, Thou art his disciple; but we are disciples of Moses.

³⁴ They answered and said to him, Thou wast wholly born in sins, and dost thou teach us? And they cast him out.

²¹ And he said to me, Depart; for I will send thee far hence to the gentiles.

⁹ And I, apart from the Law, was once alive; but when the commandment came, sin came to life again, and I died;

³¹ while Israel, which strove after a law of righteousness, did not attain to a law of righteousness. ³² Why? Because they did not strive for it by faith, but as being by works. For they stumbled against the stone of stumbling;

³ For being ignorant of the righteousness which is of God, and endeavoring to establish a righteousness of their own, they have not submitted themselves to the righteousness which is of God.

¹⁰ But thou, why dost thou judge thy brother? And thou, too, why dost thou despise thy brother? For we shall all stand before the judgmentseat of God.

⁴ though I myself have reason for confidence even in the flesh. If any other man thinketh that he hath reason for confidence in the flesh, I more; ⁵ circumcised the eighth day, of the race of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of the Hebrews; as to the Law, a Pharisee; ⁶ as to zeal, persecuting the church; as to the righteousness which is in the Law, blameless.
