³⁸ Now my righteous man shall live by faith; but if he draw back, my soul hath no pleasure in him."

¹⁸ "Behold my servant, whom I chose; my beloved, with whom my soul is well pleased; I will put my Spirit upon him, and he will declare judgment to the nations.

⁴³ But when the unclean spirit is gone out from a man, it goeth through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth it not. ⁴⁴ Then it saith, I will return to my house whence I came out. And on coming, it findeth it empty, and swept, and put in order. ⁴⁵ Then it goeth and taketh with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they enter in, and dwell there; and the last state of that man becometh worse than the first. So will it be also with this wicked generation.

²¹ but, having no root within him, endureth only for a time; and when tribulation or persecution ariseth on account of the word, he immediately falleth away.

¹⁷ For therein is revealed the righteousness which is of God from faith to faith; as it is written, "But the righteous shall live by faith."

¹¹ But further, that through the observance of the Law no one is accepted as righteous with God is evident; for "the righteous shall live by faith."

¹⁵ who both killed the Lord Jesus, and the prophets, and drove us out, and please not God, and set themselves against all men,

⁴ For it is impossible that those who have once been enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and been make partakers of the Holy Spirit, ⁵ and have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, ⁶ and have fallen away, should again be renewed to repentance, since they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to open shame.

²⁶ For if we sin willingly after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remaineth a sacrifice for sins; ²⁷ but a certain fearful looking for judgment, and an indignation by fire, which will devour the adversaries.

¹⁹ promising them liberty, while they themselves are slaves of corruption; for by what a man is overcome, by the same is he also brought into bondage. ²⁰ For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein and overcome, the last state is worse with them than the first. ²¹ For it would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after having known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered to them. ²² It hath happened to them according to the true proverb, The dog returned to his own vomit; and, The sow that was washed, to her wallowing in the mire.

¹⁹ They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have remained with us; but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they are not all of us.
