¹³ It is God who works in you both to will and to work, for his good pleasure.

⁵⁸ »May he bend our hearts toward him. Then we will follow him and obey his commands, laws, and rules, which he commanded our ancestors to obey.

¹⁴ »Yet my people and I cannot really give you anything. This is because everything is a gift from you, and we have only given back what is yours already. ¹⁵ »You know, O Jehovah that we pass through life like exiles and strangers, as our ancestors did. Our days are like a passing shadow, and we cannot escape death. ¹⁶ »O Jehovah, our God, we have brought together all this wealth to build a Temple to honor your holy name. In honesty and sincerity I have willingly given all this to you. I have seen how your people who are gathered here have been happy to bring offerings to you. ¹⁸ »Jehovah, God of our ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, keep such devotion always strong in your people’s hearts and keep them always faithful to you.

¹² The hand of God was also on Judah to give them one heart to do what the king and the princes commanded by the word of Jehovah.

¹ It was the first year of Cyrus, king of Persia. In order that the word of Jehovah (YHWH) given by the mouth of Jeremiah might come true, Jehovah moved the spirit of Cyrus, king of Persia. He made a public statement through all his kingdom, and put it in writing, saying:

⁵ The heads of the clans of the tribes of Judah and Benjamin, the priests and Levites, and everyone else whose heart God had moved got ready to go and rebuild Jehovah’s Temple in Jerusalem.

⁴ The king asked: »What is your desire?« So I made prayer to the God of heaven.

²⁷ Praise be to Jehovah, the God of our fathers, who has put such a thing into the heart of the king, to make fair the house of Jehovah that is in Jerusalem.

³ Your people will volunteer in the day of your power. Your young people will come to you in holy splendor like dew from the womb of the dawn (in the early morning).

³⁶ Incline my heart to your laws and not to dishonest gain.

⁴ Do not let me be persuaded to do anything evil or to become involved with wickedness, with people who are troublemakers. Do not let me taste their delicacies.

¹ Jehovah controls the mind of a king as easily as he directs the course of a stream. He turns it where ever he wishes.

¹² Jehovah, you establish peace for us. All that we have accomplished you have done for us.

³³ »This is the covenant (agreement) that I will make with Israel after those days,« declares Jehovah. »I will put my teachings (Law) inside them. I will write those teachings (Law) on their hearts (inner man) (mind) (will) (conscience) (understanding). I will be their God, and they will be my people.«

³⁸ »They will be my people, and I will be their God.

³² »Do not fear little flock for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.

²⁷ John answered: »A man can receive nothing unless it is given to him from heaven.

⁴⁵ »It is written in the prophets: Jehovah shall teach them all. Every one who hears the Father and has learned comes to me. (Jeremiah 31:34)

⁶⁵ He stated: »For this reason listen to what I say. No man can come to me, except it be given to him from the Father.«

²¹ The hand (Spirit) of God was with them. A great number believed, and turned to the Lord.

¹¹ When they had not yet been born nor performed anything good or vile, so the purpose of God regarding the choosing would continue without dependence on works but on the One who calls.

¹⁶ So then it does not depend on mans will or effort, but on God who shows mercy.

⁶ And there are different operations, but it is the same God who works in all.

¹⁰ By the divine influence of God I am what I am. His grace was not given to me in vain for I labored more than all of them. Yet it was not I. It was the divine influence and favor of God in me.

⁵ We are not adequate by ourselves to account for anything. Our adequacy is from God.

⁵ He predetermined (ordained) us to adoption, as sons to himself through Jesus Christ, according to the kind intention of his will.

⁹ He made known to us the secret of his will, according to his good pleasure and purpose.

¹¹ We were assigned as heirs predetermined according to his purpose. He works all things according to his direction and will.

⁴ But God, being rich in mercy, because of his great love with which he loved us, ⁵ even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ. For by grace (loving-kindness) you have been saved.

⁸ By grace (Greek: charis, divine favor, loving-kindness) you have been saved through faith. It is not from you. It is the gift from God!

¹¹ We pray always for you, that our God may count you worthy of your calling, and fulfill every desire of goodness and every work of faith with power.

¹³ We always have to thank God for you, brothers. Jehovah loves you and we thank God that in the beginning he chose you to be saved through sanctification by the Spirit and faith in the truth. ¹⁴ It was for this he called you through our good news. This is so you may obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

⁹ God has saved us and called us with a holy calling. This is not according to our works, but according to his purpose and grace that was granted us in Christ Jesus, from all eternity.

⁴ When the kindness of God our Savior, and his love toward man, appeared, ⁵ not by works done in righteousness, which we did, but according to his mercy he saved us, through the washing of regeneration (restoration) (spiritual rebirth) and renewing (renovation) of the Holy Spirit.

²¹ make you perfect (mature) in every good thing. May you do his will, working in us that which is well-pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be the glory for ever and ever. Amen.

¹⁶ Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers. ¹⁷ Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above. It comes down from the Father of lights (truth and spiritual purity), with whom there is no variation. He does not change like shifting shadows.

³ Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy he gave us a new birth to a living hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.

¹⁸ Using his own will, he gave us birth through the word of truth. This way we would be a kind of first fruits of his creatures.
