Mark 9 Cross References - NSB

1 He continued: »Truly I tell you there are some here who will in no way experience death, till they see the kingdom of God come with power.« 2 Six days later Jesus took Peter, James and John up on a high mountain completely alone. He was transfigured in front of them. 3 His garments became brilliant white. Nothing on earth could make them this white. 4 Elijah and Moses appeared before them. They were talking with Jesus. 5 Peter said to Jesus: »Teacher it is good for us to be here. Let us make three tabernacles, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.« 6 Peter and the others were afraid and they did not know what to say. 7 A cloud hovered over them and a voice came out of the cloud: »This is my Son the beloved listen to him!« 8 Suddenly they saw no one near them except Jesus. 9 They came down the mountain. He warned them not to tell anyone what they had seen until after the Son of man had risen from the dead. 10 They kept questioning among themselves what the rising from the dead means. 11 Then they asked him how is it that the scribes say that Elijah must first come? 12 He said: »Elijah does come first and restores all things. It is written that the Son of man should suffer and be treated with contempt? 13 »But I say to you that Elijah has come. They have done to him what ever they wished just as it is written about him.« 14 When they came to the disciples they saw a great crowd with them and scribes questioning them. 15 Suddenly the crowd saw him and ran to him to greet him. 16 He asked them: »What are you talking about?« 17 One of the people answered him: »Teacher I brought my son who is unable to talk because of a spirit. 18 »The spirit seizes him and slams him down. He foams at the mouth and grinds his teeth. I asked your disciples to cast it out but they could not do it.« 19 Jesus then said: »O faithless generation. How long will I be with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring him to me.« 20 They brought the boy to him. Suddenly the spirit threw him into convulsions. He fell on the ground rolled around and foamed at the mouth. 21 Jesus asked his father: »How long has this been going on?« He said: »Since he was a child.« 22 Often it casts him into the fire and into the water to destroy him. If you can do anything have compassion on us and help us. 23 Jesus said to him: »All things are possible to him who has faith.« 24 Both father and child immediately shouted: »I have faith make my faith stronger.« 25 When Jesus saw the people he ordered the unclean spirit to come out of him. He commanded the spirit that caused the loss of voice and hearing to leave and never return to him. 26 The spirit cried out and shook the child violently. It came out and the child became like a dead person. Most of them said: »He is dead.« 27 Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up. 28 When the child went into the house his disciples asked him privately: »Why were we unable to send it out?« 29 He replied: Only prayer will make this sort come out. 30 He desired that no man know about it. Therefore they left there through Galilee. 31 He taught his disciples: »The Son of man will be handed over to men who will put him to death. After three days he will come back from the dead.« 32 They did not understand and they were afraid to ask him about it. 33 They traveled to Capernaum. When they were in the house he asked them: »What were you talking about on the way?« 34 They said nothing because they had had an argument between themselves about who was the greatest. 35 He sat down and the twelve came to him. He said: »If any man has the desire to be first, he would be last of all and servant of all.« 36 He put a little child in the middle of them and taking him in his arms he said to them: 37 »Whoever receives a little child in my name, receives me, and whoever receives me receives him who sent me.« 38 John spoke up: »Teacher, we saw someone who does not follow us casting out demons in your name. We tried to stop him because he does not follow us.« 39 But Jesus said: »Do not stop him, for there is no one who will do a mighty work in my name, and be able quickly to speak evil of me. 40 »For whoever is not against us is on our side. 41 »Whoever will give you a cup of water to drink in my name, because you are Christ’s, most assuredly I tell you, he will in no way lose his reward. 42 »Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to stumble, it would be better for him if a great millstone were hanged about his neck and he were cast into the sea. 43 »If your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off. It would be better to enter into life maimed then, having two hands to be destroyed in the ever-burning trash fires in the Valley of Hinnom. (Greek: Gehenna) 44 (spurious, but included in King James Version, »Where the worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.«) 45 »If your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off. It is good for you to enter into life with only one foot, rather than having two feet to be cast into the ever-burning fires of Hinnom. (Greek: Gehenna: symbolic of total destruction) 46 (The same wording as verse 44, spurious: Tischendorf’s Spurious Passages) 47 »If your eye causes you to stumble, cast it out. It is good for you to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be destroyed in the ever-burning trash fires in the valley of Hinnom. 48 (»For the worm does not die and the fire is not quenched.« Questionable passage.) 49 »For every one will be salted with fire. 50 »Salt is good. I will be merciful to anyone I want to.« 20 But he said: »You cannot see my face, because no one may see me and live.« 21 Then Jehovah said: »Look, there is a place near me. Stand by this rocky cliff. 22 »When my glory passes by, I will put you in a crevice in the cliff and cover you with my hand until I have passed by. 23 »Then I will take my hand away, and you will see my back, but my face must not be seen.«

Psalms 22:1-31

1 ([Psalm of David]) My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far away from my deliverance, so far away from the words of my moaning? 2 My God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer. I cry by night, but I find no rest. 3 Yet you are holy, you who dwell seated on the praises of Israel. 4 Our ancestors trusted you. They trusted, and you delivered them. 5 They cried to you and were delivered. They trusted you and were never disappointed. 6 Yet, I am a worm and not a man. I am scorned by humanity and despised by people. 7 All who see me laugh at me. Insults pour from their mouths. They shake their heads and say: 8 »Put yourself in Jehovah’s hands. Let Jehovah save him! Let God rescue him since he is pleased with him!« 9 You are the one who brought me out of the womb. You made me feel safe at my mother's breasts. 10 I was placed in your care from birth. From my mother's womb you have been my God. 11 Do not be so far away from me. Trouble is near, and there is no one to help. 12 Many bulls have surrounded me. Strong bulls from Bashan have encircled me. 13 They opened their mouths to attack me like ferocious, roaring lions. 14 I am poured out like water. All my bones are out of joint. My heart has melted within me like wax (I am weak). 15 My power is dried up like pieces of broken pottery. My tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth. You lay me down in the dust of death. 16 Dogs have surrounded me. A mob has encircled me. They have pierced my hands and feet. 17 I can count all my bones. People stare and gloat over me. 18 They divide my clothes among themselves. They cast lots (throw dice) for my clothing. 19 Do not stay far off, O Jehovah. Come quickly to assist me, O my strength. 20 Rescue me from the sword, my life from vicious dogs. 21 Save me from the mouth of the lion and from the horns of wild oxen. You have answered me. 22 I will tell my people about your name. I will praise you within the congregation. 23 All who reverence Jehovah, praise him! All you descendants of Jacob honor him! Stand in awe of him, all you descendants of Israel. 24 Jehovah has not despised or been disgusted with the plight of the oppressed one. He has not hidden his face from that person. Jehovah heard when that oppressed person cried out to him for help. 25 My praise comes from you while I am among those assembled for worship. I will fulfill my vows in the presence of those who respect Jehovah. 26 Humble (meek) people will eat until they are full. Those who look to Jehovah will praise him. May your heart live forever. 27 All the ends of the earth will remember and return to Jehovah. All the families from all the nations will worship you. 28 This is because the kingdom belongs to Jehovah and he rules the nations. 29 All prosperous people on earth will eat and worship. All those who go down to the dust will kneel in front of him, even those who are barely alive. 30 There will be descendants who serve him, a generation that will be told about Jehovah. 31 They will tell people yet to be born about the righteousness he has performed.

Psalms 69:1-36

1 ([Psalm of David]) Save me, O God, for the waters have come up to my neck! 2 I sink in deep mire, where there is no foothold. I have come into deep waters, where the floods overflow me. 3 I am weary with my crying. My throat is dry. My eyes fail, looking for my God. 4 Those who hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of my head. Those who want to destroy me, being my enemies wrongfully, are mighty. I have to restore what I did not take away. 5 O God, you know my foolishness. My sins are not hidden from you. 6 Do not let those who wait for you to be shamed through me, Lord Jehovah of Hosts. Do not let those who seek you be brought to dishonor through me, God of Israel. 7 Because for your sake, I have borne reproach. Shame has covered my face. 8 I have become a stranger to my brothers, an alien to my mother's children. 9 Zeal for your house consumes me. The reproaches of those who reproach you have fallen on me. 10 When I wept and I fasted, that was to my reproach. 11 When I made sackcloth my clothing, I became a byword to them. 12 Those who sit in the gate talk about me. I am the song of the drunkards. 13 But as for me, my prayer is to you, Jehovah, in an acceptable time. God, in the abundance of your loving kindness, answer me in the truth of your salvation. 14 Deliver me out of the mire, and do not let me sink. Let me be delivered from those who hate me, and out of the deep waters. 15 Do not let the floodwaters overwhelm me; neither let the deep swallow me up. Do not let the pit shut its mouth on me. 16 Answer me, Jehovah, for your loving kindness is good. According to the multitude of your tender mercies, turn to me. 17 Do not hide your face (turn away) from your servant, for I am in distress. Answer me speedily! 18 Draw near to me and redeem it. Ransom me because of my enemies. 19 You know my reproach, my shame, and my dishonor. My adversaries are all before you. 20 Reproach has broken my heart, and I am full of heaviness. I looked for some to take pity, but there was none; for comforters, but I found none. 21 They also gave me gall for my food. In my thirst, they gave me vinegar to drink. 22 Let their table before them become a snare. Let it become retribution and a trap. 23 Let their eyes be darkened, so that they cannot see. Let their backs be continually bent. 24 Pour out your indignation on them. Let the fierceness of your anger overtake them. 25 Let their habitation be desolate and let no one live in their tents. 26 For they persecute him whom you have wounded. They tell of the sorrow of those whom you have hurt. 27 Charge them with crime upon crime. Do not let them come into your righteousness. 28 Let them be blotted out of the book of life, and not be written with the righteous. 29 I am in pain and distress. O God, Let your salvation protect me. 30 I will praise the name of God with a song. I will magnify him with thanksgiving. 31 It will please Jehovah better than an ox of bull that has horns and hoofs. 32 The humble have seen it and are glad. And you, who seek after God, let your heart live. 33 For Jehovah hears the needy and does not despise his captive people. 34 Let heaven and earth praise him, the seas and everything that moves in it! 35 God will save Zion, and build the cities of Judah. They shall settle there, and own it. 36 The children also of his servants shall inherit it. Those who love his name shall dwell in it.

Who has believed our message and to whom has the arm (power) of Jehovah been revealed? 2 He grew up before him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of dry ground. He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him. Nothing in his appearance will make us desire him.

Isaiah 53:2-12

2 He grew up before him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of dry ground. He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him. Nothing in his appearance will make us desire him. 3 He was despised and rejected by men. He was a man of sorrows familiar with suffering. Like one from whom men hide their faces he was despised. We did not consider him to be worth much. 4 He took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows. We considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted. 5 But he was pierced for our transgressions! He was crushed for our iniquities! The punishment that brought us peace was upon him. There has been healing for us because of his wounds. 6 We are all like sheep. We have gone astray! Each of us has turned to his own way. Jehovah has caused the iniquity (sin) of all of us to be laid on him. 7 He was oppressed and afflicted and yet he did not open his mouth. He was led like a lamb to the slaughter. He was silent like sheep ready to be sheared. He did not open his mouth. 8 He was oppressed, judged and taken away. And who can speak of his descendants? He was removed from the land of the living. He was destroyed because of the transgression of my people. 9 He was buried like a criminal in a rich mans grave. He had done no wrong, nor was any deceit in his mouth. 10 It was Jehovah’s will to allow him to be crushed. Even though Jehovah makes his life a guilt offering, he will see his offspring and prolong his days, and the will of Jehovah will prosper in his hand. 11 After his suffering he will see the light and be satisfied. By his knowledge my righteous servant will justify many. He will bear their iniquities. 12 Therefore I will give him a portion among the great. He will divide the spoils with the strong. This is because he poured out his life unto death. He was numbered with the transgressors. He bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

3 He was living in the tombs. No man was able to bind him even with a chain. 4 Often he was bound in chains and iron bands but he would break them. No man was strong enough to keep him still. 5 Day and night in the tombs and in the mountains he cried out. He would cut himself with stones.

Mark 6:14-28

14 John the Baptist had become well known. King Herod heard that John had risen from the dead. Therefore he was doing these powerful works. 15 But others said: »It is Elijah.« And others said: »It is a prophet, like one of the prophets.« 16 Herod said: »It is John whom I beheaded, raised from the dead.« 17 For Herod captured John and locked him in prison for the sake of Herodias his wife. She was his brother Philip’s wife before he married her. 18 John said to Herod: »It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.« 19 Herodias had a grudge against John and was determined to have him killed. 20 But Herod feared John. He knew he was a righteous and holy man so he kept him safe. That is why he listened to John but was perplexed. 21 It was Herod’s birthday. He invited his lords, the military commanders, and the prominent men of Galilee to supper. 22 When the daughter of Herodias danced for Herod and his guests, she pleased him so much he promised her anything she desired. 23 He pledged to her, »Whatever you ask of me, I will give it to you, up to half of my kingdom.« 24 She asked her mother, »What should I ask?« And the mother said: »The head of John the Baptist.« 25 At once she went to the king and asked: »Will you give me the head of John the Baptist on a platter.« 26 The king was very sorry. Even so he kept his promise to her. He did not turn her down. This also showed his dinner guests he was a man of his word. 27 He immediately commanded his guard to behead John the Baptist and bring his head to him. 28 He brought his head on a platter and gave it to the young lady. In turn she gave it to her mother.

26 The woman was a Greek Syrophoenician by race. She wanted him to drive out the demon out of her daughter.

11 The Pharisees came to question him. They were testing him and seeking a sign from heaven.

Mark 8:17-18

17 Hearing this Jesus said: »Why do you reason about having no bread? Do you not understand? Are your hearts dull of understanding? 18 »Having eyes, do you not see? Having ears, do you not hear? And do you not remember?

Mark 9:2-3

2 Six days later Jesus took Peter, James and John up on a high mountain completely alone. He was transfigured in front of them. 3 His garments became brilliant white. Nothing on earth could make them this white. 4 Elijah and Moses appeared before them. They were talking with Jesus.

Mark 9:10

10 They kept questioning among themselves what the rising from the dead means.

Mark 9:12

12 He said: »Elijah does come first and restores all things. It is written that the Son of man should suffer and be treated with contempt?

Mark 9:15

15 Suddenly the crowd saw him and ran to him to greet him.

Mark 9:25

25 When Jesus saw the people he ordered the unclean spirit to come out of him. He commanded the spirit that caused the loss of voice and hearing to leave and never return to him. 26 The spirit cried out and shook the child violently. It came out and the child became like a dead person. Most of them said: »He is dead.«

Mark 9:28-29

28 When the child went into the house his disciples asked him privately: »Why were we unable to send it out?« 29 He replied: Only prayer will make this sort come out. 30 He desired that no man know about it. Therefore they left there through Galilee. 31 He taught his disciples: »The Son of man will be handed over to men who will put him to death. After three days he will come back from the dead.« 32 They did not understand and they were afraid to ask him about it.

34 They said nothing because they had had an argument between themselves about who was the greatest.

It is good for you to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be destroyed in the ever-burning trash fires in the valley of Hinnom. 48 (»For the worm does not die and the fire is not quenched.« Questionable passage.)

He met with the twelve to tell them the things that were to happen to him. 33 »When we go to Jerusalem the Son of man will be turned over to the chief priests and the scribes. They will condemn him to death and hand him over to the people of the nations. 34 »They will mock him, spit on him, and scourge him. Then they will kill him. After three days he will rise again.«

Mark 10:42-45

42 Jesus called them together and said: »You know that those who rule over the nations lord it over them. Their great ones exercise authority over them. 43 »It is not so among you. Whoever would become great among you, shall be your minister (servant) (attendant). 44 »Whoever would be first among you, shall be servant of all. 45 »For the Son of man also came not to be ministered to, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.«

Jesus the Nazarene, who has been impaled, is not here. He has risen. Behold, the place where they laid him! 7 »Go tell his disciples and Peter that he goes before you into Galilee. There you will see him just as he told you.« 8 They fled from the tomb, for trembling and astonishment had come on them. They said nothing to anyone for they were afraid.

We could make one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.« He did not know what he was saying. 34 While he said these things a cloud enveloped them and they were filled with fear. 35 A voice came out of the cloud saying: »This is my Son my chosen one. And no one can cross over to us from where you are.

John 1:6-36

6 God sent a man named John. (Malachi 3:1) 7 He came to tell (witness) (testify) about the light and help people have faith. 8 Not being the light he came to give a witness of it. 9 The true light, which gives light to every man, came into the world. (Isaiah 49:6) 10 The world was made through him. He was in the world and the world did not recognize him. 11 He came to his own. They did not receive him! 12 He gave the right to become children of God to all who received him. Even to those who believe in his name. 13 They were born from God. It was not from blood, or the will of the flesh, or the will of man. 14 The Word [Jesus] became flesh (a human being) and lived with us. We saw the glory of the only begotten son from the Father. He was full of loving-kindness and truth.

John 1:14-36

14 The Word [Jesus] became flesh (a human being) and lived with us. We saw the glory of the only begotten son from the Father. He was full of loving-kindness and truth. 15 John spoke about him and declared: He is the one I said would come after me. He is greater than I am because he lived before me.« 16 Out of the fullness of his undeserved kindness he gives us one blessing after another. 17 The law came through Moses. Loving-kindness and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No man has ever seen God. The only begotten God-like one who is closest to the Father (in the bosom of the Father) tells us about him. (Psalm 8:5) 19 John gave his witness even as Jewish authorities sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem. They asked him: »Who are you?« 20 He said: »I am not the Christ.« 21 They asked him: »Are you Elijah?« He said: »I am not.« »Are you the prophet?« He answered: »No.« 22 They said to him: »Who are you? We need to know so we can tell the ones who sent us.« 23 He said: »I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness. Isaiah the prophet said: ‘Make straight the way of Jehovah (YHWH).’« (Isaiah 40:3) 24 They were sent from the Pharisees. 25 They said to him: »Why do you baptize if you are not the Christ, not Elijah, and not the prophet?« 26 John answered: »I baptize in water. There is one in your midst whom you do not know. 27 »I am not worthy to fasten his shoes.« 28 These things were done in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing. 29 The next day he saw Jesus coming to him. He boldly declared: »Behold! The Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world!« 30 »This is he whom I said would come after me.
