Or did others tell you it concerning me?« ³⁵ Pilate answered: »Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests delivered you to me! What have you done?« ³⁶ Jesus answered: »My kingdom is not of this world! If my kingdom were of this world my servants would fight that I should not be delivered to the Jews. My kingdom is not from this domain.« ³⁷ Pilate said: »Are you a king then?« Jesus answered: »As you say I am a king. I was born and came into the world for this purpose, that I should bear witness to the truth! Every one who is of the truth hears my voice.«

³ They came to him, and said: »Hail, King of the Jews!« They struck him with their hands.

¹⁹ Pilate wrote a title and put it on the stake. There it was written, JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS. ²⁰ This title was read by many of the Jews, for the place where Jesus was impaled was near the city. It was written in Hebrew, Latin and Greek. ²¹ The chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate: »Do not write, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews.«
