¹⁰ After those generations were gathered to their fathers (died) another generation followed them. This new generation did not know Jehovah or the works he had done for Israel.

¹⁵ »As for yourself, you shall go to your ancestors in peace. You shall be buried at a good old age.

⁸ Then he took his last breath and died at a very old age. After a long and full life, he joined his ancestors in death.

¹⁷ Ishmael lived one hundred and thirty-seven years. Then he died and was gathered to his ancestors.

³³ Jacob finished giving these instructions to his sons. He pulled his feet into his bed. He took his last breath and joined his ancestors in death.

² But Pharaoh responded: »Who is Jehovah, that I should obey his voice to let Israel go? I do not know Jehovah, and besides, I will not let Israel go.«

¹³ »After you see it, you, too, will join your ancestors in death, as your brother Aaron did.

¹⁶ Jehovah said to Moses: »You are about to lie down with your fathers in death. This people will arise and play the harlot with the strange gods of the land. They will plunge into the midst of it. They will forsake me and break my covenant that I made with them.

¹² The sons of Eli were corrupt. They did not know Jehovah.

¹² »‘I will choose one of your sons to be king when you reach the end of your life and are buried in the tomb of your ancestors. I will make him a strong ruler.

⁹ »You my son Solomon, learn to know your father’s God. Serve Jehovah wholeheartedly and willingly because he searches every heart and understands every thought we have. If you dedicate your life to serving him, he will accept you. On the other hand if you abandon him, he will reject you from then on.

¹⁴ »They say to God: ‘Leave us alone! We do not desire to know your ways.’

⁵ How great (spectacular) (excellent) are your works, O Jehovah! How very deep are your thoughts! ⁶ A stupid (senseless) person cannot know and a fool cannot understand.

¹² At their feasts there are lyres and harps, tambourines and flutes, and wine. Yet, they do not pay attention to what Jehovah is doing or respect what his hands have done.

³ They bend their tongue like their bow. Lies and not truth prevail in the land. They move from evil to evil. »They do not know me,« says Jehovah.

³⁴ »No longer will each person teach his neighbors or his relatives by saying: ‘Know Jehovah.’ »All of them, from the least important to the most important, will know me,« declares Jehovah. »I will forgive their wickedness and I will no longer hold (remember) their sins against them.«

¹⁶ He pled the cause of the afflicted and needy. Then it was well. »Is that not what it means to know me?« Says Jehovah.

³⁶ »After David served his own generation by doing the will of God he died and was buried with his fathers. His body decayed.

⁸ However at that time, you did not know God. You were in bondage to things that are really not gods at all. ⁹ Now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how is it that you turn back again to the weak and poor fundamental things? Do you want to slave for them all over again?

⁸ They will render vengeance to those who do not know God, and to those who do not obey the good news of our Lord Jesus.

¹⁶ They profess that they know God; but deny him by their works! They are detestable, disobedient, and not approved for any good work.
