¹⁰ Joshua said: »By this you shall know the living God is among you, and that he will without fail drive out from before you the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Hivites, and the Perizzites, and the Girgashites, and the Amorites, and the Jebusites.

¹⁵ »As for yourself, you shall go to your ancestors in peace. You shall be buried at a good old age. ¹⁶ »They shall come back here in the fourth generation. The iniquity of the Amorites is not yet complete.« ¹⁷ The sun went down and it was dark. A smoking fire pot and a flaming torch passed between these pieces. ¹⁸ On that day Jehovah made a covenant with Abram. He said: »To your descendants I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates,

⁸ »I have come down to rescue them from the Egyptians. I will bring my people out of Egypt into a country where there is good land, rich with milk and honey. I will give them the land where the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites now live.

⁷ He called the name of the place Massah, and Meribah, because of the complaining of the children of Israel, and because they tested Jehovah, saying: »Is Jehovah among us or not?«

²⁷ »I will send my terror ahead of you and throw any nation you meet into a panic. I will make all your enemies flee from you. ²⁸ »I will throw your enemies into panic! I will drive out the Hivites, the Canaanites, and the Hittites as you advance. ²⁹ »I will not drive them out within a year’s time. If I did, the land would become deserted. There would be too many wild animals for you. ³⁰ »I will drive them a few at a time, until there are enough of you to take possession of the land.

² »I will send an angel ahead of you. I will force out the Canaanites, Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites.

²⁸ »The priest shall perform the ritual of purification at the altar to purify you from your sin. You will be forgiven. ²⁹ »The same regulation applies to all who unintentionally commit a sin, whether they are native Israelites or resident foreigners. ³⁰ »Any who sin deliberately, natives or foreigners, are guilty of treating Jehovah with contempt. They shall be put to death.

¹ »Jehovah your God will bring you into the land you are to possess. He will clear away many nations ahead of you. The nations he will clear: the Hittites, Girgashites, Amorites, and the Canaanites, the Perizzites, Hivites, and the Jebusites. These seven nations are larger and mightier than you.

²⁶ »‘Has any other human ever heard the only true God speaking from fire, as we have? And if they have, would they live to tell about it?

¹⁷ »‘My anger will be kindled against them in that day. I will abandon them and hide my face from them. They will be consumed by many evils and troubles. They will say in that day: ‘Is it because our God is not among us that these evils have come upon us?’

⁴⁵ Jehovah kept every one of the promises he made to the people of Israel.

³¹ Phinehas, the son of Eleazar the priest, said to them: »We know that Jehovah is with us. You have not rebelled against him. So you have saved the people of Israel from Jehovah’s punishment.«

¹² Jehovah’s angel appeared to him there and said: »Jehovah is with you, mighty man of valor!« ¹³ Gideon said to him: »May I ask, sir, why has all this happened to us if Jehovah is with us? What happened to all the wonderful things that our fathers told us Jehovah used to do, how he brought them out of Egypt? Jehovah has abandoned us. He left us to the mercy of the Midianites.«

²⁶ David asked some soldiers standing nearby: »What will a man get for killing this Philistine and stopping him from insulting our people? Who does that worthless Philistine think he is? He makes fun of the army of the living God!«

³⁶ Then at the time of the offering, Elijah the prophet came near and said, »Jehovah, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Israel, let it be seen this day that you are God in Israel, and that I am your servant, and that I have done all these things by your order. ³⁷ »Give me an answer, O Jehovah. Give me an answer so that this people may see that you are God. That you have made their hearts come back again.«

²⁸ Micaiah said: If you come back at all in peace, Jehovah has not sent his word by me.

⁴ »‘The Assyrian emperor sent his chief official to insult the living God. May Jehovah your God hear these insults and punish those who spoke them. So pray to God for those of our people who survive.’«

¹⁶ Jehovah has revealed himself by his righteous judgments. The wicked are trapped by their deeds.

² You drove out the nations with your own hand (great power). Then you planted them; you afflicted the peoples and spread them abroad. ³ It was not with their swords that they took possession of the land. They did not gain victory with their own strength. It was your right hand, your arm (power), and the light of your presence that did it, because you were pleased with them.

¹⁴ Therefore Jehovah will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel (God with us).

¹⁰ Jehovah is the true (faithful) (right) God! He is the living God and the everlasting king. The earth quakes at his wrath. The nations cannot endure his indignation.

¹⁰ »Yet the number of the children of Israel will be like the grains of the sand of the sea, which cannot be measured or numbered. It will be said: You are the sons of the living God in the place where it was said you are not my people!

¹⁶ Simon Peter answered: »You are the Christ, the Son of the living God!«

⁶⁹ »We believe and know that you are the Holy One of God.«

² I told you in advance as if I were present the second time. Being absent now I write to those who have sinned and to all others. If I come again I will not spare you. ³ Since you seek a proof of Christ speaking in me, who is not weak toward you but is mighty in you.

⁹ All those people speak about how you received us when we visited you, and how you turned away from idols to God, to serve the true and living God,

³¹ It is a dreadful (terrible) thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
