² Jacob said to his family and those who were with him: »Get rid of the foreign gods that you have. Wash yourselves until you are ritually clean. Change your clothes. ³ »After that let us go to Bethel. I will make an altar there to God, who answered me when I was troubled and who has been with me wherever I have gone.« ⁴ So everyone gave Jacob their idols and their earrings. He buried them under the oak (big) tree near Shechem.

¹⁴ »‘Honor Jehovah and serve him sincerely and in truth. Get rid of the gods that your ancestors used to worship in Mesopotamia and in Egypt, and serve only Jehovah.

¹⁵ But the people of Israel said to Jehovah: »We have sinned. Do to us what seems best to you, only please, save us today!« ¹⁶ So they removed the foreign gods and worshiped Jehovah. He could bear the distress of Israel no longer.

³ Samuel told the entire nation of Israel: »If you return to Jehovah with all your hearts you must get rid of the foreign gods you have, including the statues of the goddess Astarte. You must dedicate your lives to Jehovah and serve him only. Then he will rescue you from the Philistines.« ⁴ So the Israelites got rid of their idols of Baal and Astarte. They worshiped only Jehovah.

⁵⁸ »May he bend our hearts toward him. Then we will follow him and obey his commands, laws, and rules, which he commanded our ancestors to obey.

³⁶ Incline my heart to your laws and not to dishonest gain.

⁴ Do not let me be persuaded to do anything evil or to become involved with wickedness, with people who are troublemakers. Do not let me taste their delicacies.

I do not want you to have fellowship with demons. ²¹ You cannot drink the cup of Jehovah and the cup of demons. You cannot be partakers of the Jehovah's Table and of the table of demons. ²⁸ Let us be thankful, because we will receive a kingdom that cannot be shaken. Let us be grateful and worship (serve) (intensely adore) God in a way that will please him, with reverence and awe. ²⁹ Our God is a destroying (consuming) fire.
