⁵ The morning after each feast, Job would get up early to offer sacrifices for each of his children in order to purify them. He always did this because he thought that one of them might have sinned by insulting God unintentionally.

⁵ Jehovah saw how great man’s wickedness on the earth had become. Every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time.

²⁰ Noah built an altar to Jehovah and, taking some of all the clean animals and clean birds, he sacrificed burnt offerings on it.

³ Early the next morning Abraham saddled his donkey. He took two of his servants and his son Isaac with him. He had cut the wood for the burnt offering. Then he set out for the place that God had told him about.

² Jacob said to his family and those who were with him: »Get rid of the foreign gods that you have. Wash yourselves until you are ritually clean. Change your clothes. ³ »After that let us go to Bethel. I will make an altar there to God, who answered me when I was troubled and who has been with me wherever I have gone.«

¹² Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, took a burnt offering and sacrifices for God, and Aaron came with all the elders of Israel to eat a meal with Moses’ father-in-law before God.

¹⁰ Jehovah continued: »Go to the people and tell them to spend today and tomorrow purifying themselves for worship. They must wash their clothes.

⁵ Moses sent young men to burn sacrifices to Jehovah. They sacrificed some cattle as peace offerings.

³ »‘If his offering is a burnt offering from the herd, it should be a male without defect. He shall offer it at the doorway of the Tent of Meeting, that he may be accepted before Jehovah. ⁴ »‘He should lay his hand on the head of the burnt offering. It may then be accepted for him to make atonement with Jehovah on his behalf. ⁵ »‘Slaughter the bull in Jehovah’s presence. Aaron's sons, the priests, will offer the blood. They will throw it against all sides of the altar that is at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting. ⁶ »‘Skin the burnt offering, and cut it into pieces.

¹⁰ A man, whose mother was Shelomith (daughter of Dibri, from the tribe of Dan in Israel) and whose father was from Egypt, got into a quarrel with an Israelite in the camp. ¹¹ The Israelite woman's son began cursing Jehovah’s name and treating it with contempt. So they brought him to Moses. ¹² They held him in custody until Jehovah told them what to do. ¹³ Jehovah spoke to Moses: ¹⁴ »The man who cursed my name must be taken outside the camp. All who heard him curse my name must lay their hands on his head. Then the whole congregation must stone him to death. ¹⁵ »Inform the Israelites: ‘Those who treat their God with contempt will be punished for their sin. ¹⁶ »‘However those who curse Jehovah’s name must be put to death. The whole congregation must stone them to death. It makes no difference whether they are Israelites or foreigners. Whoever curses (abuses) Jehovah’s name must die.

⁵ »Greetings,« he replied, »I have come to sacrifice to Jehovah. »Perform the ceremonies to make yourselves holy, and come with me to the sacrifice.« He performed the ceremonies for Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.

³¹ Elijah took twelve stones, the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom Jehovah said: »Israel will be your name.«

¹⁰ »Get two good-for-nothing persons to come before him and give witness that he has been cursing God and the king. Then take him out and have him stoned to death.«

¹³ The two good-for-nothing persons came in and took their seats before him and gave witness against Naboth, in front of the people. They said: »Naboth has been cursing God and the king.« Then they took him outside the town and had him stoned to death.

³⁰ The priests and the Levites made themselves clean; and they made the people clean, and the gateways and the wall.

¹¹ »Now suppose you take away everything he has. He will curse you to your face!«

⁹ His wife asked him: »Are you still holding on to your principles? Curse God and die!«

⁴ »When your children sinned against him, he gave them over to the power of their sin.

²⁵ »When it raises itself up the gods are afraid; at the crashing they are beside themselves.

⁸ »So now take seven bulls and seven rams and go to my servant Job and sacrifice a burnt offering for yourselves. My servant Job will pray for you, and I will accept his prayer and not deal with you according to your folly. You did not speak correctly about me, as my servant Job has.«

¹⁰ »Will he find delight in the Almighty? Will he call upon God at all times?

³ In the morning, O Jehovah, You will hear my voice. In the morning I will address my prayer to you and be on the watch.

¹⁰ Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, where you are going.

¹⁴ »O Jerusalem, wash the evil from your heart so that you may be saved. How long will your wicked thoughts lodge within you?

⁹ »The heart is more deceitful than all else and is desperately corrupt. Who can understand it? ¹⁰ »I, Jehovah, search the heart and examine the mind (inner man). I give to each man according to his ways, according to the results of his deeds.

²¹ »It is from the heart that evil thoughts come such as: fornications, thefts, murders, adulteries, ²² coveting, wickedness, deceit, loose conduct, envy, slander, pride, and foolishness. ²³ »All these evil things come from within and defile the man.«

⁷⁵ »May we serve in holiness and righteousness before him all our days.

⁷ »Should God avenge his chosen that cry to him day and night, and yet he is longsuffering over them?

⁵⁵ It was the Jewish Passover. Many went out of the country to Jerusalem to purify themselves before the Passover.

²² »Repent of this wickedness, and pray to God, that the thought in your heart may be forgiven you.

²⁶ Then Paul took the men and became purified with them. They went into the temple, declaring the fulfillment of the days of purification, until the offering was offered for every one of them.

⁵ Do not judge anything before the time. Wait until the Lord comes. He will bring to light the hidden things of darkness and make apparent the counsels of the hearts. Then each man’s praise will come from God.

² For I am zealous over you with a godly fervor (ardor) (zeal)! For I promised you to one husband, that I might present you as a pure virgin to Christ.

¹⁸ With prayer and supplication pray at all times in the Spirit. Watch with all perseverance and supplication for all the holy ones.
