⁵ »Jehovah the God of Israel says: ‘Like these good figs, so I will regard the captives of Judah as good. I have sent them out of this place into the land of the Chaldeans.

¹⁶ »He fed you in the desert with manna. Your fathers had never seen this. He did this in order to humble you and test you. But he also did this so that things would go well for you in the end.

¹² Jehovah, how happy are those you instruct, the ones to whom you teach your law! ¹³ You give them rest from days of trouble until a pit is dug to trap the wicked. ¹⁴ Jehovah will not abandon his people. He will not desert those who belong to him.

⁶⁷ Before I was afflicted I went astray, but now I keep your word.

⁷¹ It is good for me that I was afflicted, that I may learn your statutes.

⁷ Jehovah is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble! He knows (protects) (takes care of) those who take refuge in him.

⁹ »I will bring the third part into the fire. I will refine them, as silver is refined, and I will test them as gold is tested. They will call on my name, and I will hear them. I will say: ‘It is my people!’ They will say: ‘Jehovah is my God!«’

¹² »But he told them: ‘I do not know you.’

²⁷ »My sheep hear my voice. I know them and they follow me.

²⁸ We know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to his purpose.

³ But if any man loves God, God knows him.

⁹ Now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how is it that you turn back again to the weak and poor fundamental things? Do you want to slave for them all over again?

¹⁹ The foundation of God stands firm having this seal: »Jehovah knows those who belong to him,« and: »Everyone who names the name of Jehovah is to abstain from wickedness.«

⁵ You have forgotten the exhortation that reasons with you as to sons: »My son, do not despise (regard lightly) discipline from Jehovah and do not lose heart when he corrects you. (Proverbs 3:11, 12) ⁶ »Jehovah disciplines those he loves. In fact he scourges every son (child) he receives.« ⁷ God deals with you like children. Endure discipline (instruction) (training). Who is the child whom a father does not discipline? ⁸ If you are without discipline, you are illegitimate children, and not sons. ⁹ Furthermore, we have had fathers of our flesh that corrected us, and we gave them respect. Shall we not much more be in subjection to the Father of spirits and live? ¹⁰ They disciplined us for a few days for their own pleasure. He disciplines for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness.

¹⁹ »'I reprove and discipline those whom I love: be zealous therefore, and repent.
