¹⁶ Give glory to Jehovah your God before he brings darkness and before your feet stumble on the dusky mountains. You hope for light. He makes it into deep darkness and turns it into gloom.

²¹ Jehovah then said to Moses: »Raise your hand toward the sky. Darkness thick enough to be felt will cover the land of Egypt.«

¹⁹ Joshua said to Achan: »My son, give glory to Jehovah God of Israel and confess to him. Tell me now what you have done. Do not hide it from me.«

⁵ »You must make these models of the tumors and of the mice that are ravaging your country. You must give honor to the God of Israel. Perhaps he will stop punishing you, your gods, and your land.

¹⁹ You crushed us in a place for jackals and covered us with the shadow of death.

⁷ Give to Jehovah, you families of the people. Give to Jehovah glory and strength. ⁸ Give to Jehovah the glory due to his name. Bring an offering and come into his courts.

¹⁹ The way of the wicked is like darkness. They do not know what makes them stumble.

⁸ If a man live many years, and rejoice in them all; yet let him remember the days of darkness for they will be many. All that comes is vanity.

¹ Remember your Creator (Hebrew: Bara’, plural, Creators denotes majesty) (Ge 1:26) in the days of your youth, before the evil days come and the years draw near. You will say: »I have no pleasure in them.« ² Before the sun, or the light, or the moon, or the stars, are darkened, or the clouds return after the rain:

³⁰ In that day they will roar over their prey as the sea roars. If they look at the land, they will see only darkness and distress. Thick clouds will darken even the light.

²² They will look toward the nations of the earth and see only distress and gloom. They will go in anguish and be banished into darkness.

⁹ That is why justice is far from us, and righteousness does not reach us. We hope for light and we walk in darkness. We hope for brightness but we walk in gloom.

² »Darkness now covers the earth! Thick darkness overwhelms the nations. But Jehovah shines for you. His glory appears to you.

²³ I see the earth. It is without form and empty. I see the sky. Its lights are gone.

¹⁵ We waited for peace, but no good came. We waited for a time of healing, but all we got was terror!

¹⁹ Have you completely rejected Judah? Do you despise Zion? Why have you struck us so hard that we cannot heal? We hope for peace, but no good comes from it. We hope for a time of healing, but there's only terror.

¹² »That is why their own way will become like a slippery path in the dark. They will be chased away, and they will fall down in the dark. I will bring disaster on them. It is time for them to be punished,« proclaims Jehovah.

¹⁷ Our eyes are still wasting away in looking for our false help. We watch for a nation unable to give salvation.

⁹ »It will happen in that day,« said the Lord Jehovah, »that I will cause the sun to go down at noon, and I will darken the earth in the clear day. ¹⁰ »I will turn your feasts into mourning and all your songs into lamentation (dirges). I will bring sackcloth on all loins and baldness on every head. I will make it as the mourning for an only son like the end of a bitter day.

³⁵ Jesus said to them: »The light will be with you for a little while. Walk while you have the light, that darkness does not overtake you. He who walks in the darkness does not know where he goes.

⁸ It is a stone that people stumble over, and a large rock that people find offensive. They stumble because they are disobedient to the word. To this end they were appointed.

¹⁰ He who loves his brother lives in the light, and there is no cause for stumbling (offence) in him. ¹¹ But he who hates his brother is in the darkness, and walks in the darkness. He does not know where he goes because the darkness has blinded his eyes.
