²¹ Was Abraham our father justified by works when he offered up Isaac his son on the altar?

⁹ They came to the place God had told him about. Abraham built an altar and arranged the wood on it. He tied up his son and placed him on the altar, on top of the wood. ¹⁰ Then he picked up the knife to kill him. ¹¹ Jehovah’s angel shouted from heaven: »Abraham! Abraham!« »Here I am!« he answered. ¹² »Do not hurt the boy or harm him in any way!« The angel said. »Now I know that you truly obey God, because you were willing to offer him your only son.«

¹⁶ He said: »I am taking an oath on my own name, declares Jehovah, that because you have done this and have not refused to give me your son, your only son, ¹⁷ ‘»I will certainly bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and the grains of sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of their enemies’ cities. ¹⁸ ‘»All the nations will ask me to bless them as I have blessed your descendants. This is because you obeyed my command.’«

³ »‘I took Abraham, your ancestor, from the land across the Euphrates and led him through the whole land of Canaan. I gave him many descendants. I gave him Isaac,

² Do not enter into judgment with your servant, for in your sight no man living is righteous.

² »Look to Abraham, your father, and to Sarah, who gave you birth. When I called him he was only one. I blessed him and made him many.«

³⁷ »For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.«

⁹ »Do not presume that Abraham is your father. I tell you that God can make descendants for Abraham from these stones!

³¹ »When the Son of man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. ³² »All nations will be gathered before him. He will then separate them one from another, as the shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. ³³ »He will set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left. ³⁴ »The King will say to those on his right hand: ‘Come, you blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. ³⁵ »‘I was hungry and you gave me something to eat. I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink. I was a stranger and you took me in. ³⁶ »‘I was naked and you clothed me. I was sick and you visited me. I was in prison and you came to me.’ ³⁷ »The righteous will answer him: ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? ³⁸ »‘When did we see you as a stranger and take you in, or naked and dress you? ³⁹ »‘When did we see you sick or in prison and come to you?’ ⁴⁰ »The King will answer: ‘To the extent that you did it to one of the least of my brothers, you did it to me.’

⁷³ »It was the oath he spoke to Abraham our father.

²⁴ »He called out: Father Abraham! Take pity on me! Please send Lazarus to dip his finger in some water and cool off my tongue. I am in torment in this fire!

³⁰ »The rich man responded: It is not enough father Abraham! If someone from the dead went to them they would repent.

³⁹ They answered: »Our father is Abraham.« Jesus replied: »If you were Abraham’s children, you would do the works of Abraham.

⁵³ »Are you greater than our father Abraham? He died! The prophets also died. Who do you make yourself out to be?«

² He said: »Men, brothers and fathers, listen; The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, before he lived in Haran.

²⁰ No flesh will be justified before God by works of the law. Knowledge of sin comes from the law.

¹ What shall we say about Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh?

¹² The father of circumcision to those who not only are circumcised, but who also walk in the steps of faith of our father Abraham that he had when he was not circumcised.

¹⁶ For this reason it is by faith that it may be according to grace (divine influence) (loving-kindness). The promise may be sure to all descendants! This is not only to that which is of the law, but to that also which is by the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all.

¹⁸ A man will say: »You have faith and I have works. Show me your faith without the works, and I will show you my faith by my works.«

²⁴ You see that a man is justified (declared and pronounced righteous) by works, and not by faith alone.
