¹¹ His people finally remembered Moses and the days of old. Where is the one who brought them out of the sea with the shepherds of his flock? Where is the one who put his Holy Spirit in the midst of them?

²² The Israelites went through the middle of the sea on dry ground. The water stood like a wall on their right and on their left.

³⁰ That day Jehovah saved the people of Israel from the Egyptians. The Israelites saw them lying dead on the seashore.

¹¹ »But Moses pleaded with Jehovah his God. »Jehovah,« he said, »why are you so angry with your people? These are your people whom you brought out of Egypt using your great power and mighty hand! ¹² »Do not let the Egyptians say: ‘He was planning all along to kill them in the mountains and wipe them off the face of the earth. That is why he brought them out of our land.’ Do not be so angry. Reconsider your decision to bring this disaster on your people.

⁴⁰ »‘However if they confess their sins and the sins of their ancestors and the treacherous things they did to oppose me, ⁴¹ »‘I will oppose them and bring them into the lands of their enemies. Then, if they humble their uncircumcised hearts and accept their guilt, ⁴² »‘I will remember my promise to Jacob, Isaac, and Abraham. I will also remember the land. ⁴³ »‘The land, abandoned by them, will enjoy its time to honor Jehovah while it lies deserted without them. They must accept their guilt because they rejected my rules and looked at my laws with disgust. ⁴⁴ »‘Even when they are in the land of their enemies, I will not reject them or look at them with disgust. I will not reject or cancel my promise to them, because I am Jehovah their God. ⁴⁵ »‘For their well being, I will remember the promise to their ancestors. I brought them out of Egypt to be their God while nations looked on. I am Jehovah!’«

¹⁷ »I will come down and speak with you there. I will take some of the spirit I have given and give it to them. Then they can help you bear the responsibility for these people. You will not have to bear it alone.

²⁵ Jehovah came down in the cloud and spoke to him. He took some of the spirit he had given to Moses and gave it to the seventy elders. When the Spirit came on them, they began to shout like prophets, but not for long.

²⁹ Moses asked him: »Do you think you need to stand up for me? I wish all Jehovah’s people were prophets and that Jehovah would put his Spirit on them!«

¹³ Moses said to Jehovah: »You brought these people out of Egypt by your power. When the Egyptians hear what you have done to your people, ¹⁴ they will tell it to the people who live in this land. These people have already heard that you, Jehovah, are with us, that you appear in plain sight when your cloud stops over us, and that you go before us in a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night. ¹⁵ »But if you kill all these people at the same time the nations who have heard these reports about you will say, ¹⁶ »Jehovah was not able to bring these people into the land he promised them, so he slaughtered them in the desert. ¹⁷ »Jehovah, let your power be as great as when you said, ¹⁸ »Jehovah is patient, forever loving; He forgives wrongdoing and disobedience. He never lets the guilty go unpunished. In fact he punishes children for their parents’ sins to the third and fourth generation. ¹⁹ »By your great love, please forgive these people’s sins, as you have forgiven them from the time they left Egypt until now.« ²⁰ Jehovah said: »I forgive them, as you have asked. ²¹ »But as I live and as the glory of Jehovah fills the whole earth, I solemnly swear that ²² none of the people who saw my glory and the miraculous signs I did in Egypt and in the desert will see the land I promised their ancestors. They have tested me now ten times and refused to obey me. ²³ »None of those who treat me with contempt will see it! ²⁴ »My servant Caleb has a different attitude and has wholeheartedly followed me, I will bring him to the land he already explored. His descendants will possess it. ²⁵ »The Amalekites and Canaanites are living in the valleys. Tomorrow you must turn around, go back into the desert. Follow the road that goes to the Red Sea.«

³⁰ »When you are in trouble (distress) and all these things happen to you in the latter days, turn to Jehovah your God and obey his voice. ³¹ »Jehovah your God is a merciful God. He will not forsake you. He will not destroy you, nor forget the covenant he made with your fathers.

²⁰ »You gave your good Spirit to be their teacher. You did not hold back your manna from their mouths. You gave them water when they had need of it.

⁶ O Jehovah, remember your loving kindness and merciful deeds. They have existed from eternity.

⁵ I have considered the days of old, the years of ancient times. ⁶ I remember my song in the night. I consider in my own heart; my spirit diligently inquires: ⁷ Will Jehovah reject us forever? Will he be favorable no more? ⁸ Has his loving kindness vanished forever? Does his promise fail for generations? ⁹ Has God forgotten to be gracious? Has he, in anger, withheld his compassion? ¹⁰ Then I thought: I will remember the years of the right hand of the Most High. ¹¹ I will remember Jehovah's deeds! I will remember your wonders of old.

²⁰ You led your people like a flock, by the hand of Moses and Aaron.

⁴⁷ Remember how short my life span is! Have you created the sons of men for no reason? ⁴⁸ Can man go on living and never see death? Who can set himself free from the power of the grave? ⁴⁹ Where is the evidence of your mercy, Lord? You swore an oath to David on the basis of your faithfulness. ⁵⁰ Jehovah, remember the reproach of your servant. Remember how I have carried in my heart the insults from so many people.

⁵ I remember the days of old. I meditate (think deeply) (intensely study) on all your activities. I muse on the work of your hands.

⁹ Awake, awake! Clothe yourself with strength, O arm of Jehovah. Awake, as in days gone by, as in generations of old. Was it not you who cut Rahab to pieces, who pierced that monster through? ¹⁰ Was it not you who dried up the sea, the waters of the great deep, who made a road in the depths of the sea so that the redeemed might cross over?

⁶ »They did not ask: ‘Where is Jehovah who brought us from Egypt? He led us through the desert, through a wasteland and its pits, a land of drought and the shadow of death. No one lives there or travels there.’

¹⁵ Look down and see from heaven, from your holy and beautiful dwelling. Where is your determination (zeal) and might? Where is the longing of your heart and your compassion? Do not hold back.

⁸ »Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, according to the name of my god, finally came to me. He has the spirit of the holy gods. So I told the dream to him saying:

⁵ »I gave my word when you came out of Egypt that my Spirit would be with you. Do not fear!«

⁶ He answered: »This is the word of Jehovah to Zerubbabel.« Then Jehovah of Hosts said: ‘Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit.’«

⁵⁴ »He has helped Israel his servant that he might remember mercy. ⁵⁵ »He spoke to our fathers. To Abraham and his seed forever.«
