²¹ Then Israel said to Joseph: »I am about to die. God will be with you. He will bring you back to the land of your fathers.

⁵ He took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, all the possessions they had accumulated and the people they had acquired in Haran. They set out for the land of Canaan and soon arrived there.

¹⁴ »I will bring judgment on the nation that they serve! Afterward they will come out with great possessions.

³ »You will live there as a foreigner. I will be with you and bless you. I will keep my promise to your father Abraham by giving this land to you and your descendants.

¹⁵ »Remember, I am with you. I will watch over you wherever you go. I will also bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I do what I have promised you.«

¹ Jacob continued to live in the land of Canaan, where his father had lived.

⁴ »I will go to Egypt with you. I will make sure you come back again. Joseph will close your eyes when you die.«

²⁴ Before Joseph died, he told his brothers: »I will not live much longer. God will take care of you. He will lead you out of Egypt to the land he promised Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

¹ These are the words Moses spoke to all Israel. He was on this side of the Jordan in the desert wilderness, in the plain near the Red Sea (Suph), between Paran, Tophel, Laban, Hazeroth, and Dizahab. ² It is only an eleven-day journey from Horeb by the way of Mount Seir to Kadesh-barnea. ³ It was the fortieth year, eleventh month, on the first day of the month. Moses spoke to the children of Israel, according to all the commandments Jehovah (YHWH) gave him for them. ⁴ After he killed Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon, and Og king of Bashan, who lived at Astaroth in Edrei: ⁵ On this side (east) of Jordan in the land of Moab, Moses declared the Law. He said: ⁶ »Jehovah our God spoke to us in Horeb. He said: ‘You have lived long enough on this mountain. ⁷ »Leave this place and go to the mountain of the Amorites, and all the places near there in the plain, in the hills, and in the valley and in the south, and by the sea side, to the land of the Canaanites, and to Lebanon, to the great river, the river Euphrates. ⁸ »I have given you this land. Go in and possess the land Jehovah pledged to give to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and to their descendants (offspring) after them.’ ⁹ »I spoke to you then and said: ‘I am not able to bear the burden of you alone. ¹⁰ »‘Jehovah your God has increased your numbers. Today you are more numerous than the stars of heaven. ¹¹ »‘Jehovah the God of your fathers will make you a thousand times as many as you are, and bless you, as he promised you! ¹² »‘How can I alone bear your encumbrance, your burden, and your strife? ¹³ »‘Take wise men with understanding, who are known among your tribes. I will make them rulers over you.’ ¹⁴ »You answered me: ‘The thing you speak is good for us to do.’ ¹⁵ »So I took the chief of your tribes, wise men and known, and made them rulers over you. I made them captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, and captains over fifties, and captains over tens, and officers among your tribes. ¹⁶ »I charged your judges to hear the cases between your countrymen and judge righteously between every man and his brother, and the stranger with him. ¹⁷ »You will not show partiality in judgment. You shall hear the small and the great. You will not fear man for the judgment is God's. The case that is too hard for you, bring to me, and I will hear it.’ ¹⁸ I commanded you at that time all the things you should do. ¹⁹ »When we left Horeb, we went through that entire great and terrible wilderness. You saw it by way of the mountain of the Amorites, as Jehovah our God commanded us. We went to Kadesh-barnea. ²⁰ »I said to you: ‘You have arrived at the mountain of the Amorites. Jehovah gives this mountain to us. ²¹ »See, Jehovah your God give you this land. Possess it, for Jehovah the God of your fathers said to you: Do not fear. Do not be discouraged.’ ²² »Every one of you came near to me and said: ‘We will send men before us. They will search the land. They will bring us word about the way we must go and what cities are there.’ ²³ What you said pleased me very much. I took twelve of your men, one from each tribe. ²⁴ They went up to the mountain to the valley of Eshcol, and explored it. ²⁵ They picked the fruit of the land in their hands, and brought it down to us. They brought us word again. They said: ‘It is a good land that Jehovah our God gives us.’ ²⁶ Even so they were not willing to go. They rebelled against the command of Jehovah your God: ²⁷ »You complained in your tents, and said: Jehovah hates us so he brought us out of the land of Egypt, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us. ²⁸ »‘Where can we go up? Our brothers caused us to lose heart. They said: The people are stronger and taller than we are. The cities are large and the walls go up to the sky. Moreover we have seen the sons of the Anakims there.«’ ²⁹ »I said to you: ‘Do not be afraid of them. ³⁰ »‘Jehovah your God leads you. He will fight for you just as he did for you in Egypt before your eyes! ³¹ »‘You saw how Jehovah your God carried you like a father carries his son all the way until you reached this place.’ ³² »Yet in all this you did not trust Jehovah your God. ³³ »He went ahead of you to find places for you to camp. He offered fire by night and cloud by day to show you the way you should go. ³⁴ »Jehovah heard what you said. He was angry and solemnly swore: ³⁵ »‘Not one man of this evil generation will see that good land, which I swore to give your fathers, ³⁶ »‘Except Caleb son of Jephunneh. He will see it. I will give him and his descendants the land he walks on. This is because he followed Jehovah wholeheartedly. ³⁷ »‘Jehovah was angry with me because of you. He said to me: ‘You will also not go there. ³⁸ »‘Your assistant Joshua son of Nun will go there. He will lead the people into the land. Encourage him to go there. ³⁹ »‘The little ones that you said would be taken captive will enter the land. Your children who do not know good from bad will go in. I will give it to them and they will possess it. ⁴⁰ »‘But you must turn around and go back through the desert toward the Red Sea.’ ⁴¹ »You answered: ‘We have sinned against Jehovah. We will fight just as Jehovah our God commanded us.’ When every man puts on his armor and weapons of war they will be ready to go to the mountain. ⁴² »‘But Jehovah said to me: ‘Tell them, do not go and fight! I am not with you. Your enemies will defeat you.«’ ⁴³ I told you, but you would not listen. You disobeyed Jehovah’s command and proudly invaded the mountainous region. ⁴⁴ The Amorites who lived there came out and attacked you. They chased you like a swarm of bees. They defeated you! They drove you back from Seir all the way to Hormah. ⁴⁵ You returned and cried to Jehovah. Jehovah, however, did not listen to you. He turned a deaf ear to you! ⁴⁶ That is why you stayed in Kadesh as long as you did.

⁸ »Jehovah is the one who goes ahead of you. He will be with you. He will not fail you or forsake you. Do not fear or be downhearted.«

⁵ »No man will be able to resist you all the days of your life. Just as I was with Moses I will be with you. I will not fail you nor forsake you.

⁹ »Have I commanded you? Be strong and of a good courage. Do not be afraid, neither be dismayed; for Jehovah your God is with you wherever you go.«

⁷ Jehovah said to Joshua: »This day will I begin to exalt you in the sight of all Israel. Now they may know that, as I was with Moses, so I will be with you.

¹⁴ »It is time for me to die. Every one of you knows in his heart and very being that Jehovah your God has given you all the good things he promised. Every promise he made has been kept; not one has failed.

¹ Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel together at Shechem. He called the elders, the leaders, the judges, and the officers of Israel, and they came to the presence of God. ² Joshua said to all the people: »This is what Jehovah, the God of Israel says: ‘Long ago your ancestors lived on the other side of the Euphrates River and worshiped other gods. One of those ancestors was Terah, the father of Abraham and Nahor. ³ »‘I took Abraham, your ancestor, from the land across the Euphrates and led him through the whole land of Canaan. I gave him many descendants. I gave him Isaac, ⁴ and to Isaac I gave Jacob and Esau. I gave Esau the hill country of Edom as his possession, but your ancestor Jacob and his children went down to Egypt. ⁵ »‘Later I sent Moses and Aaron, and I brought great trouble on Egypt. I led you out. ⁶ »‘I brought your ancestors out of Egypt, and the Egyptians pursued them with chariots and cavalry. When your ancestors got to the Red Sea ⁷ they cried out to me for help. I put darkness between them and the Egyptians. I made the sea come rolling over the Egyptians and drown them. You know what I did to Egypt. You lived in the desert a long time. ⁸ »‘I brought you to the land of the Amorites, who lived on the east side of the Jordan. They fought you, but I gave you victory over them. You took their land. I destroyed them as you advanced. ⁹ »‘The king of Moab, Balak son of Zippor, fought against you. He sent word to Balaam son of Beor and asked him to put a curse on you. ¹⁰ »‘But I would not listen to Balaam, so he blessed you, and in this way I rescued you from Balak. ¹¹ »‘You crossed the Jordan and traveled to Jericho. The men of Jericho fought you, as did the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Girgashites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. I gave you victory over all of them. ¹² »‘You advanced and I threw them into panic in order to drive out the two Amorite kings. Your swords and bows had nothing to do with it. ¹³ »‘I gave you a land that you had never worked and cities that you had not built. Now live there and eat grapes from vines that you did not plant, and olives from trees that you did not plant. ¹⁴ »‘Honor Jehovah and serve him sincerely and in truth. Get rid of the gods that your ancestors used to worship in Mesopotamia and in Egypt, and serve only Jehovah. ¹⁵ »‘If you are not willing to serve him, decide today whom you will serve, the gods your ancestors worshiped in Mesopotamia or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are now living. As for my family and me, we will serve Jehovah.’« ¹⁶ The people replied: »We would never leave Jehovah to serve other gods! ¹⁷ »Jehovah our God brought our fathers and us out of slavery in Egypt. We saw the miracles he performed. He kept us safe wherever we went among all the nations through which we passed. ¹⁸ »As we advanced to this land, Jehovah drove out all the Amorites who lived here. We also will serve Jehovah. He is our God!« ¹⁹ Joshua said to the people: »You may not be able to serve Jehovah. He is a holy God and will not forgive your sins. He will tolerate no rivals, ²⁰ and if you leave him to serve foreign gods, he will turn against you and punish you. He will destroy you, even though he was good to you before.« ²¹ The people said to Joshua: »No! We will serve Jehovah!« ²² Joshua replied: »You are your own witnesses to the fact that you have chosen to serve Jehovah.« They said: »We are witnesses!« ²³ »Remove the foreign gods you have.« He demanded: »Pledge your loyalty to Jehovah, the God of Israel.« ²⁴ The people said to Joshua: »We will serve Jehovah our God. We will obey his commands.« ²⁵ Joshua made a covenant for the people that day at Shechem. He gave them laws and rules to follow. ²⁶ Joshua wrote these commands in the Book of the Law of God. Then he took a large stone and set it up under the oak tree in Jehovah’s sanctuary. ²⁷ He told the people: »This stone will serve as our witness. It has heard all the words that Jehovah spoke to us. So it will be a witness against you, to keep you from rebelling against your God.« ²⁸ Joshua sent the people away, and everyone returned to their own part of the land. ²⁹ After that, Jehovah’s servant Joshua son of Nun died at the age of a hundred and ten. ³⁰ They buried him on his own land at Timnath Serah in the hill country of Ephraim north of Mount Gaash. ³¹ As long as Joshua lived, the people of Israel served Jehovah. After his death they continued to do so as long as those leaders were alive who had seen for themselves everything Jehovah had done for Israel. ³² The body of Joseph, which the people of Israel had brought from Egypt, was buried at Shechem, in the piece of land that Jacob had bought from the sons of Hamor, the father of Shechem, for a hundred pieces of silver. Joseph’s descendants inherited this land. ³³ Eleazar son of Aaron died and was buried at Gibeah, the town in the hill country of Ephraim that had been given to his son Phinehas.

² »It is my time to die. I go the way of all people of the earth. Be strong and be a man. ³ »Do what Jehovah your God orders you to do. Obey all his laws and commands, as written in the Law of Moses. That way wherever you go you may prosper in everything you do. ⁴ »‘If you obey Jehovah he will keep the promise he made when he told me, ‘Your descendants will rule Israel as long as they are careful to obey my commands faithfully with all their heart and being.’

⁴⁶ Jehovah lives! Blessed is my rock! Praise the God of my salvation.

³ Do not trust in princes, in mortal man, in whom there is no salvation. ⁴ His spirit (Hebrew: ruach, breath, life) departs, he returns to the earth; in that very day his thoughts perish (come to an end).

⁵ »’Your fathers, where are they?’ The prophets, do they live forever? ⁶ »I commanded my servants the prophets to obey my words and my statutes. They disregarded them and suffered greatly. Then they repented and admitted that I, Jehovah of Hosts, corrected them as they deserved according to their deeds.’«

²⁹ »Let your servant depart according to your word in peace.

³⁶ »After David served his own generation by doing the will of God he died and was buried with his fathers. His body decayed.

⁶ I am already being offered (poured out as an offering), and the time of my departure has come.

³ He was without father or mother or genealogy, and neither had beginning of days nor end of life, but resembling the Son of God, he continues as a priest forever.

⁸ In this instance mortal men receive tithes, in the other by the one of whom it is testified that he lives.

²³ There have been many priests. This is because they have been prevented from continuing by death. ²⁴ He continues forever and therefore has his priesthood without change. ²⁵ He is able to save completely those who approach God through him, because he is always alive to intercede for them.

¹⁴ I know that putting off my earthly dwelling is imminent, even as our Lord Jesus Christ indicated to me.
