²² Reuben said: »Did I not tell you? Did I say, ‘Do not sin against the boy’? You would not listen! Now comes the reckoning for his blood.«

¹⁰ Jehovah said: »What have you done? Listen! Your brother’s blood (life) cries out to me from the ground.

⁵ »I will require your lifeblood as an accounting. I will demand an accounting from every animal. I will demand an accounting from each man for the life of his fellow man. ⁶ »Whoever sheds the blood of man will have his blood shed by man. For man was made in the image of God.

²¹ Reuben heard this and tried to protect Joseph from them. »Let us not kill him,« he said. ²² »Do not murder him or even harm him. Just throw him into a dry well out here in the desert.« Reuben planned to rescue Joseph later and take him back to his father.

²⁹ Reuben came back to the pit and found that Joseph was not there. He tore his clothes in sorrow. ³⁰ He returned to his brothers and said: »The boy is not there! What am I going to do?«

³² »Jehovah will punish Joab for those murders he committed without my father David's knowledge. Joab killed two innocent men who were better men than he: Abner, commander of the army of Israel, and Amasa, commander of the army of Judah.

²² King Joash forgot that Zechariah’s father had always been a loyal friend. So when the people of Judah plotted to kill Zechariah, Joash joined them and gave orders for them to stone him to death in the courtyard of the Temple. As Zechariah was dying, he said: »I pray that Jehovah will see this and punish all of you.«

¹² God remembers those who suffer. He does not forget their cry, and he punishes those who wrong them.

¹⁸ »When I tell a wicked man that he will surely die, but you do not warn him or speak out so that he can change his wicked way in order to save his life; that wicked man will die because of his sin. I will hold you responsible for his death.

⁵⁰ »The blood of all the prophets shed from the foundation of the world may be required of this generation. ⁵¹ »This includes the blood of Abel to the blood of Zachariah, who perished between the altar and the sanctuary. I tell you it will be required of this generation.

⁹ Men were scorched with great heat. They blasphemed the name of God, who has power over these plagues. They did not repent and give him glory.
