⁷ »Jehovah, the God of heaven, took me from my father’s house and from the land of my birth. He spoke to me and swore to me. He said: I will give this land to your descendants. He will send his angel before you. You will take a wife for my son from there.

¹ Jehovah said to Abram: »Leave your country, your people, and your father’s household, and go to the land I will show you. ² »I will make you into a great nation. I will bless you. I will make your name great. You will be a blessing. ³ »I will bless those who bless you. I will curse whoever curses you. All the people on earth will be blessed through you.« ⁴ So Abram left, just as Jehovah told him. Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he set out from Haran. ⁵ He took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, all the possessions they had accumulated and the people they had acquired in Haran. They set out for the land of Canaan and soon arrived there. ⁶ Abram traveled through the land as far as the site of the great (oak) tree of Moreh at Shechem. At that time the Canaanites were in the land. ⁷ Jehovah appeared to Abram and said: »I will give this land to your offspring (seed).« He built an altar there to Jehovah, who had appeared to him.

¹⁵ »All the land that you see I will give to you and your offspring (descendants) from generation to generation.

¹⁸ On that day Jehovah made a covenant with Abram. He said: »To your descendants I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates,

⁸ »The whole land of Canaan, where you are now a guest (alien) (foreigner) (stranger), I will give a long lasting possession to you and your descendants after you. I will be their God.«

¹⁶ He said: »I am taking an oath on my own name, declares Jehovah, that because you have done this and have not refused to give me your son, your only son, ¹⁷ ‘»I will certainly bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and the grains of sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of their enemies’ cities. ¹⁸ ‘»All the nations will ask me to bless them as I have blessed your descendants. This is because you obeyed my command.’«

³ »You will live there as a foreigner. I will be with you and bless you. I will keep my promise to your father Abraham by giving this land to you and your descendants. ⁴ »I will give you as many descendants as there are stars in the sky. I will give your descendants all of this land. They will be a blessing to every nation on earth.

²⁴ That night Jehovah appeared to Isaac. Jehovah said: »I am the God of your father Abraham. Do not be afraid, because I am with you. I will bless you and increase the number of your descendants for my servant Abraham’s sake.«

⁵ »Jehovah shall bring you into the land of the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites. He swore to your fathers to give you this land flowing with milk and honey. You shall observe this rite in this month.

²⁰ »I am going to send an angel before you to guard you along the way and to bring you into the place that I have prepared. ²¹ »Be on your guard before him and obey his voice. Do not be rebellious toward him. He will not pardon your transgression, since my name is in him. (He has my honor, authority and character) ²² »If you truly obey his voice and do all that I say, then I will be an enemy to your enemies and an adversary to your adversaries. ²³ »My messenger will go ahead of you. I will lead you to the land of the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Canaanites, Hivites, and Jebusites. I will wipe them out.

¹³ »Remember your servants Abraham, Isaac, and Israel. You took an oath, swearing on yourself. You told them: ‘I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky. I will give to your descendants all the land I spoke of. It will be their long lasting possession.’«

² »I will send an angel ahead of you. I will force out the Canaanites, Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites.

¹⁶ »Jehovah was not able to bring these people into the land he promised them, so he slaughtered them in the desert.

³⁰ »‘I raised my hand and swore an oath to give you this land to live in. But none of you will enter it except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.

¹¹ »None of the people twenty years old or older, who came from Egypt, will see the land I promised Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob with an oath. This is because they did not wholeheartedly follow me.

⁸ »I have given you this land. Go in and possess the land Jehovah pledged to give to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and to their descendants (offspring) after them.’

⁴ Jehovah said: »This is the land that I swore to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, saying: I will give it to your descendants. I let you see it with your eyes, but you shall not go over there.«

⁶ »Be strong and courageous for you will help this people inherit the land. This is the land I swore to give to their fathers.

¹ An angel of Jehovah came up from Gilgal to Bochim, and said: »I led you out of Egypt and brought you to the land about which I swore to your fathers that I would never break my covenant with you.

² »These are the words of Cyrus, king of Persia: ‘Jehovah the God of heaven has given me all the kingdoms of the earth. He has made me responsible for building a house for him in Jerusalem, which is in Judah.

⁸ Jehovah says: »I will instruct you. I will teach you the way that you should go. I will advise you as my eyes watch over you.

⁷ The angel of Jehovah camps around those who reverence him, and he rescues them.

²⁴ You will guide me with your counsel, and afterward you give me honor (glory).

²⁰ Bless Jehovah you angels of his, you who excel in strength, who obey his command, and listen to the voice of his Word.

⁵ Trust in Jehovah with all your heart. Do not lean on your own understanding. ⁶ In all your ways acknowledge (recognize) Him and He will make your paths straight.

⁹ In all their difficulty he was concerned, and he was the messenger who saved them. In his love and compassion he reclaimed (redeemed) them. He always held them and carried them in the past.

⁴⁴ »In the days of those kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed. Its sovereignty will not be entrusted to another people. It will break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms and it will stand forever!

⁹ He replied: »I am Hebrew and I respect Jehovah, the God of heaven, who has made the sea and the dry land.«

⁵ »He gave him no inheritance in it, no, not so much as to set his foot on. Yet he promised that he would give it to him and his seed after him for a possession. This promise was made before he had a child.

¹⁴ Are they not all ministering spirits, sent to minister for those who will be heirs of salvation?

⁹ By faith he became an alien in the Promised Land. It was not his land. He lived in tents with Isaac and Jacob. They were heirs with him of the same promise.

¹³ In that same hour there was a great earthquake, and a tenth of the city fell. Seven thousand men were slain in the earthquake, and the survivors were afraid and gave glory to the God of heaven.
