³ »I want you to swear by Jehovah God of heaven and earth that you will not get my son a wife from the daughters of the Canaanites among whom I am living.

² The sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful. They married any of them they chose.

⁴ The NEPHILIM were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God had sexual intercourse with the daughters of men and had children by them. They were the heroes of old, men of renown.

¹⁵ Canaan was the father of Sidon his firstborn, and of the Hittites, ¹⁶ Jebusites, Amorites, Girgashites, ¹⁷ Hivites, Arkites, Sinites, ¹⁸ Arvadites, Zemarites, and Hamathites. Later the Canaanite clans scattered, ¹⁹ and the borders of Canaan reached from Sidon toward Gerar as far as Gaza, and then toward Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim, as far as Lasha.

¹⁹ He blessed him and said: »Blessed be Abram by God Most High, maker of heaven and earth.

²² But Abram said to the king of Sodom: »I have sworn to Jehovah, God Most High, maker of heaven and earth:

²³ »Swear to me here by God that you will not deal falsely with me or with my offspring or with my posterity. Consider the kindness that I have shown to you. Please show it to me and to the land in which you have sojourned.«

²⁸ They answered: »Now we know that Jehovah is with you. We think that there should be a solemn agreement between us. We want you to promise ²⁹ »that you will not harm us. We did not harm you. We were kind to you and let you go peacefully. Now it is clear that Jehovah has blessed you.« ³⁰ Isaac prepared a feast for them, and they ate and drank. ³¹ Early the next morning each man made his promise and sealed it with a vow. Isaac said good-bye to them. They parted as friends.

³⁴ When Esau was forty he married Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite and Basemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite. ³⁵ These two women brought a lot of grief to his parents, Isaac and Rebekah.

⁴⁶ Rebekah said to Isaac: »I cannot stand Hittite women! I would rather die than see Jacob marry one of them.«

⁸ It was clear to Esau that his father despised the local Canaanite women.

⁴⁴ »Now, let us make an agreement (covenant) and let it stand as a witness between you and me.« ⁴⁵ Jacob took a stone and set it up as a marker. ⁴⁶ Jacob said to his relatives: »Gather some stones.« They took stones, put them into a pile, and ate there by the pile of stones. ⁴⁷ In his language, Laban called it »Jegar Sahadutha« (Witness Pile), but Jacob called it »Galeed.« ⁴⁸ Laban said: »This pile of stones stands as a witness between you and me today.« This is why it was named Galeed, ⁴⁹ and also Mizpah (Watchtower), because he said: »May Jehovah watch between you and me when we are unable to see each other. ⁵⁰ »If you mistreat my daughters or marry other women behind my back, remember that God stands as a witness between you and me.« ⁵¹ Laban also said to Jacob: »Here is the pile of stones. Here is the marker that I have set up between you and me. ⁵² »This pile of stones and this marker stand as witnesses that I will not go past the pile of stones to harm you, and that you will not go past the pile of stones or marker to harm me. ⁵³ »May the God of Abraham and Nahor the God of their father judge between us.« So Jacob swore this oath out of respect for his father Isaac.

²⁵ »Promise me that you will take my body with you when God leads you to that land.«

⁷ »Never use the name of Jehovah your God in a false and evil way. Jehovah will make sure that anyone who is false, evil, careless and vain with his name will be punished.

¹¹ »The case between them must be settled by swearing an oath to Jehovah that the neighbor did not take the other person’s animal. The owner must accept the oath. The neighbor does not have to make up for the loss.

¹³ »Listen to everything Jehovah has said to you. Do not pray to other gods! Do not even mention their names.

¹⁶ »You might take some of his daughters for your sons, and his daughters might commit spiritual immorality (fornication) with their gods and cause your sons also to commit spiritual immorality with their gods.

¹² »‘Do not swear falsely by my name, so as to profane the name of your God. I am Jehovah.

²¹ »‘Jehovah will make you an example for your people to see what happens when the curse of this oath comes true: Jehovah will make your uterus drop and your stomach swell. Then the priest will administer the oath and the curse by saying:

¹³ »You must respect Jehovah your God. Serve him and swear by his name!

³ »Do not intermarry with them. Do not give your daughters to their sons or take their daughters for your sons. ⁴ »They will lead your young people away from me to serve other gods. So the anger of Jehovah will be kindled against you and will destroy you suddenly.

²⁰ »Respect Jehovah your God and serve him. Hold fast to him and take your oaths in his name.

¹² »I pray that you will swear to me by Jehovah, since I have showed you kindness that you will also show kindness to my father’s house, and give me a true token(sign) (pledge of truth);

¹⁷ Once again Jonathan made David promise to love him. Jonathan loved David as much as he loved himself.

⁶ »You are Jehovah, even you only! You made heaven, the heaven of heavens with all their armies, the earth and all things in it, the seas and everything in them. You keep them from destruction and the armies of heaven are your worshippers.

²⁵ I took up the cause against them, cursing them and giving blows to some of them and pulling out their hair. I made them take an oath by God, saying: »You are not to give your daughters to their sons or take their daughters for your sons or for yourselves.

¹⁵ Jehovah, the maker of heaven and earth, will bless you.

²³ »I have bound myself with an oath. A word has gone out from my righteous mouth that will not be recalled. Every knee will bow to me and every tongue will swear allegiance.

¹ Listen to this, people of Israel, you that are descended from Judah. You swear by the name of Jehovah and claim to worship the God of Israel. However you do not mean a word you say.

¹⁶ Whoever invokes a blessing in the land will do so by the God of (amen, so be it) truth; he who takes an oath in the land will swear by the God of truth. For the past troubles will be forgotten and hidden from my eyes.

² if you take the oath, as Jehovah lives in an honest, fair, and right way, then the nations will be blessed, and in him they will glory.«

¹¹ You will say to the idolaters: »The gods that did not make the heavens and the earth will perish from the earth and from under the heavens.«

¹⁶ »If with all their hearts they will accept the religion of my people and will swear: As Jehovah lives, as they once taught my people to swear by Baal, then they will also be a part of my people and will prosper.

⁵ »I will remove those who bow down to worship the host of heaven on the housetops and those who bow down and swear to Jehovah and yet swear by Malcolm.

³⁹ The wife is bound to her husband as long as he lives. If her husband dies, she is free to marry whom she wishes, only in the Lord.

¹⁶ Men swear by someone greater then themselves: and an oath for confirmation to them puts an end to the problem.
