¹⁴ »Let there be the girl to whom I say: ‘Please let down your jar so that I may drink,' and who answers: 'Drink, and I will water your camels also.' May she be the one whom you have appointed for your servant Isaac. By this I will know that you have shown loving-kindness to my master.«

⁸ Abram replied: »O Jehovah God, how will I know that I shall possess it?«

⁴⁴ »And she will say to me, »You drink, and I will draw for your camels also,« let her be the woman whom Jehovah has appointed for my master’s son.’

¹ Moses responded: »What if they will not believe me or listen to what I say? For they may say: ‘Jehovah has not appeared to you.’« ² Jehovah asked him: »What is that in your hand?« He answered: »A shepherd’s staff.« ³ Jehovah said: »Throw it on the ground.« When Moses threw it on the ground, it became a snake, and he ran away from it. ⁴ Jehovah said to Moses: »Reach down and pick it up by the tail.« So Moses reached down and caught it. Suddenly it became a walking stick again. ⁵ Jehovah said: »Do this to prove to the Israelites that Jehovah, the God of their ancestors, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, has appeared to you.« ⁶ Jehovah spoke to Moses again: »Put your hand inside your robe.« Moses obeyed. When he took his hand out, it was diseased, covered with white spots, like snow. ⁷ Jehovah said: »Put your hand inside your robe again.« He did so, and when he took it out this time, it was healthy, just like the rest of his body. ⁸ Jehovah said: »If they will not believe you or be convinced by the first sign, then this one will convince them. ⁹ »If in spite of these two signs they still will not believe you, and if they refuse to listen to what you say, take some water from the Nile and pour it on the ground. The water will turn into blood.«

¹⁷ Gideon replied: »If you are pleased with me, give me proof that you are really Jehovah.

³⁷ »Look I will place wool on the threshing floor where we thresh the wheat. If in the morning there is dew only on the wool but not on the ground, I will know that you are going to use me to rescue Israel.«

¹³ When Gideon arrived, he heard a man telling a friend about a dream. He was saying: »I dreamed that a loaf of barley bread rolled into our camp and hit a tent. The tent collapsed and lay flat on the ground.« ¹⁴ His friend responded: »This is nothing else but the sword of Gideon, the son of Joash. For God delivered Midian and its army to this man of Israel.« ¹⁵ When Gideon heard the dream and its interpretation he worshiped God. He returned to the camp of Israel, and called out: »Arise! Jehovah has delivered the camp of Midian into your hand.«

⁵ They said to him: »Please ask God if our journey will be successful.«

⁷ »Now get a new cart ready for two dairy cows that have never been yoked. Hitch the cows to the cart. Take their calves away and leave them in their stall. ⁸ »Take the Ark of Jehovah and put it on the cart. Put the gold objects that you are giving him as a guilt offering in a box beside the Ark. Send the cart on its way. ⁹ »Then watch where it goes. If it goes up the road to its own country toward Beth Shemesh, then this disaster is Jehovah’s doing. But if not, we will know it was not his hand that struck us, but what happened to us was an accident.«

² »When you leave me today two men will be at Rachel’s grave on the border of Benjamin at Zelzah. They will tell you: ‘We have found the donkeys you are looking for. Your father no longer cares about them. Instead he is worried about you. He keeps asking: What can I do to find my son?’« ³ »You will go from there until you find the oak tree of Tabor. You will see three men going up to God to Bethel. One will have three young goats and another three cakes of bread and another a skin full of wine: ⁴ »They will say: ‘Peace be with you.’ They will give you two cakes of bread that you should take from them. ⁵ »After that you will come to Gibeah, the hill of God, where an armed force of the Philistines is stationed. When you come to the town, you will see a band of prophets coming down from the high place with instruments of music before them. They will be acting like prophets: ⁶ »The Spirit of Jehovah will come upon you with power. You will be acting like a prophet with them, and will be changed into a different person. ⁷ »When you see these signs be sure to take what is offered to you. For God is with you. ⁸ »Go ahead of me to Gilgal. I will come to sacrifice burnt offerings and make fellowship offerings. Wait seven days until I come to tell you what to do.« ⁹ When Saul tried to leave Samuel, God changed his mind. That day all these signs happened. ¹⁰ When Saul came to the hill a group of prophets came to meet him. God’s Spirit came over him. He prophesied with them.

⁸ »We will do this,« Jonathan said. »We will go across so they can see us. ⁹ »If they agree to come to us down the hill and fight where we are, then we will not climb up to their camp. ¹⁰ »But we will go to them if they tell us to come up the hill and fight. That will mean Jehovah will help us win.«

⁷ »If he says: ‘It is well. I will be safe.’ But if he becomes angry, you will know that he is determined to harm me.

²⁴ »Attack when you hear the sound of marching in the treetops. I will be marching ahead of you to defeat the Philistine army.«

⁹ »How are you, my brother?« Joab asked Amasa. He took hold of Amasa’s beard with his right hand to kiss him.

⁸ King Hezekiah said to Isaiah: »What is the sign to prove that Jehovah will heal me and that three days later I will be able to go to the Temple?« ⁹ Isaiah replied: »Jehovah will give you a sign to prove that he will keep his promise. Would you prefer to have the shadow on the stairway go forward ten steps or go back ten steps?« ¹⁰ Then Hezekiah said: »It is an easy matter to have the shadow go forward ten steps. So have it go back ten steps.« ¹¹ Isaiah prayed to Jehovah and Jehovah made the shadow go back ten steps on the stairway set up by King Ahaz.

¹⁴ Real estate and riches are the inheritance of fathers. A prudent (wise) (sensible) wife is from Jehovah.

¹¹ »Ask Jehovah your God for a sign. Ask it in the deepest depths or in the highest heights.«
