¹⁸ Do not get drunk with wine, for that is a public act of violence, but be filled with the Spirit.

²¹ He drank some of its wine. He became drunk and lay undressed inside his tent.

³² »Come, let us get our father drunk. Then we can sleep with him and have children by him.« ³³ That night they gave him wine to drink. The older daughter had intercourse with him. But he was so drunk that he did not know it. ³⁴ The next day the older daughter said to her sister: »I slept with him last night. Let us get him drunk again tonight, and you sleep with him. Then each of us will have a child by our father.« ³⁵ So that night they got him drunk. The younger daughter had intercourse with him. Again he was so drunk that he did not know it.

²⁰ »They shall say to the elders of his city: This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious! He will not obey us! He is a glutton and a drunkard.

¹² Those who sit in the gate talk about me. I am the song of the drunkards.

³ My lips will praise you because your love (mercy) (loving kindness) (steadfast love) is better than life. ⁴ So I will bless (thank) you as long as I live. I will lift up my hands [in prayer] in your name. ⁵ You satisfy me with the richest foods. My mouth will sing your praise with joyful lips.

¹ Wine is a mocker! Strong drink leads to brawls. He who is intoxicated by it is not wise.

²⁰ Do not associate with drunkards or gluttons. ²¹ For the drunkard and the glutton will come to poverty and drowsiness will clothe a man with rags.

²⁹ Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has discord? Who has complaints? Who has wounds without cause? Who has redness of eyes? ³⁰ Those who stay long at the wine. They seek mixed wine. ³¹ Do not look on the wine when it is red, when it shines in the cup, when it goes down smoothly. ³² In the end it bites like a serpent and stings like a viper. ³³ Your eyes will see strange things and your heart (and mind) will utter perverse things. ³⁴ You will be like one who lies down in the middle of the sea; like one who lies on top of a mast. ³⁵ »They struck me but I did not become sick. They beat me and I did not feel it. When will I awake? I will seek drink yet again.«

⁴ »Draw me away. (Daughters of Jerusalem) »We will run after you.« (The Shulamite) »The king brought me into his chambers.« (Daughters of Jerusalem) »We will be glad and rejoice in you. We will remember your love more than wine!« (The Shulamite) »They are right to love you.«

¹¹ How horrible it will be for those who get up early in the morning to look for a drink and who sit up late at night until they are drunk from wine. ¹² At their feasts there are lyres and harps, tambourines and flutes, and wine. Yet, they do not pay attention to what Jehovah is doing or respect what his hands have done. ¹³ My people will go into exile because they do not understand what I am doing. Honored men will starve, and common people will be parched with thirst.

²² You are doomed! Heroes of the wine bottle! Brave and fearless when it comes to mixing drinks!

⁹ »The roof of your mouth is like the best wine for my beloved.’« (The Shulamite) »The wine goes down sweetly, causing the lips of those that are asleep to speak.

⁶ On this mountain Jehovah of Hosts will make a feast of rich food for all peoples, a feast of well-aged wines, of rich food filled with marrow, of well-aged wines strained clear of dregs.

¹ Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the water. You, who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost.

¹⁵ »Jehovah of Hosts will defend them! They will devour and trample on the sling stones. They will drink and be boisterous with the wine. They will be filled like the sacrificial basins by the corners of the altar. ¹⁶ »Jehovah their God will save them in that day like the flock of his people. They will be like the stones in a crown lifted high over his land. ¹⁷ »How great is his goodness! How great is his beauty! Grain will make the young men flourish, and new wine the virgins.«

²⁵ »Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You cleanse the outside of the cup and of the platter, yet the inside is full of extortion and excess.

²⁴ For he was a good man full of Holy Spirit and of faith. Then many people were added to the Lord.

¹³ Let us walk honestly as in the daytime, not in rioting and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and loose conduct, not in strife and jealousy.

¹¹ I wrote you not to keep company with any man who is called a brother who is a fornicator, or who is greedy, or who worships idols, or constantly gets drunk, or cheats people. Do not even eat with such a person.

¹⁰ nor thieves, nor covetous (greedy), nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortionists, will inherit the kingdom of God.

²¹ For in eating every one goes ahead with out waiting for everybody else. One is hungry and another is drunk.

I forewarn you, even as I did forewarn you, that those who practice such things would not inherit the kingdom of God. ²² The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faith, ²³ meekness (mildness), self-control; against such there is no law. ²⁴ Those who belong to Christ Jesus have impaled the flesh with its passions and lusts. ²⁵ If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit.

⁷ They that sleep do so in the night. They that get drunk are drunk in the night.

⁶ A blameless man will be the husband of one wife. He will have children that believe and who are not accused of violence and disobedience.

³ You have spent enough time in the past doing what unbelievers like to do. Your lives were spent in indecency, lusts, drunkenness, orgies, drinking parties, and the disgusting worship of idols (false gods). ⁴ They think it strange that you do not run with them in wild and reckless living and they speak evil about you.
