¹⁶ Jehovah said to Moses: »You are about to lie down with your fathers in death. This people will arise and play the harlot with the strange gods of the land. They will plunge into the midst of it. They will forsake me and break my covenant that I made with them.

⁸ Then he took his last breath and died at a very old age. After a long and full life, he joined his ancestors in death.

⁶ Early the next day the people sacrificed burnt offerings and brought peace offerings. After that they sat down to a feast, which turned into an orgy.

¹⁵ Otherwise you might make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land. They would commit spiritual immorality (fornication) with their gods and sacrifice to their gods. Someone might invite you to eat of his sacrifice.

³ »‘I will condemn them and exclude them from the people. They gave one of their children to Molech. They made my holy tent unclean, and dishonored my holy name. ⁴ »‘If the people of the land ignore those who give their children to Molech and do not put them to death, ⁵ »‘I will condemn them and their families. I will exclude them from the people. I will exclude from the people everyone who chases after Molech as if he were a prostitute. ⁶ »‘If any of you go for advice to people who consult the spirits of the dead, I will turn against you and will no longer consider you one of my people.

¹⁵ »Jeshurun (Israel) grew fat and disrespectful. You got fat! You were stuffed! You over eat! He abandoned the God who made him and scornfully treated the rock of his salvation.

¹² They forsook Jehovah God of their fathers, which brought them out of the land of Egypt. They followed other gods, of the gods of the people that were round about them. They bowed to them and provoked Jehovah to anger.

¹⁷ Yet they would not listen to their judges, but prostituted themselves to other gods. They worshiped them. They turned quickly, out of the way in which their fathers walked obeying the commandments of Jehovah. ¹⁸ When Jehovah established judges he supported each judge. He delivered them out of the hand of their enemies all the days the judge lived. He had compassion for them as they groaned under those who oppressed and afflicted them. ¹⁹ When the judge was dead they returned and corrupted themselves more than their fathers. They followed other gods to serve them, and to bow down to them. They did not give up their evil practices and stubborn ways. ²⁰ The anger of Jehovah was hot against Israel. He said: »Because this people have transgressed my covenant, which I commanded their fathers, and have not listened to my voice;

⁶ Once again the Israelites did evil against Jehovah by worshiping the Baals and the Astartes. They also worshiped the gods of Syria, of Sidon, of Moab, of Ammon, and of the Philistines. They abandoned Jehovah and stopped worshiping him.

¹³ »You still left me and worshiped other gods. I am not going to rescue you again.

¹² »‘I will choose one of your sons to be king when you reach the end of your life and are buried in the tomb of your ancestors. I will make him a strong ruler.

¹¹ »The youthful vigor that fills his bones will lie with him in the dust.

²⁷ Those who are far from you will perish. You have destroyed all those who are unfaithful to you.

³⁹ They became filthy because of what they did. They behaved like prostitutes.

² He will enter into peace. The honorable and honest will rest in his bed. ³ »But come here, you sons of the witch, you offspring of the adulterer and the prostitute! ⁴ With whom are you effeminate (self-indulgent)? With whom do you open wide your mouth and offer your tongue? Are you not children of transgression, offspring of falsehood and deceit? ⁵ Are you inflaming yourselves with gods under every green tree, slaying the children in the valleys, under the clefts of the rocks? ⁶ »Is your portion among the smooth stones of the stream? They indeed are your lot! Even to them you have poured a drink offering. You have offered a grain offering. Should this give me comfort? ⁷ »You placed your bed on a lofty and high mountain. Even there you went up to offer sacrifice. ⁸ »You ordained your memorial behind the doors and their posts. You revealed (uncovered) yourself to those other than me. You went to them. You enlarged your bed and made a covenant with them. You have loved their bed, where you saw their naked manhood.

¹¹ »Has any nation ever exchanged gods? Their gods are not really gods. Yet my people have exchanged their glory for something that does not help them. ¹² »Be horrified over this, heaven. Be terribly afraid,« declares Jehovah. ¹³ »My people have done two things wrong: (l) They have abandoned me, the fountain (source) of living waters. They have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water. (Revelation 4:11)

¹ It is said: »If a man divorces his wife and she leaves him and marries another man, her first husband should not go back to her again.« The land would become completely polluted. »You have behaved like a prostitute who has many lovers. Now you want to come back to me!« Says Jehovah. ² »Lift up your eyes to the bare hills and see. You have had sex with men in every place. You sat by the roadside waiting for them like a nomad in the desert. You have defiled (corrupted) (profaned) the land with your prostitution and wickedness. ³ »Accordingly the rain has been withheld, and there have been no spring showers. Yet, you have the unashamed (conspicuous) (impudent) look of a prostitute, and you refuse to be ashamed.

³² »It will not be like the promise that I made to their ancestors when I took them by the hand and brought them out of Egypt. They rejected that promise, although I was a husband to them,« says Jehovah.

¹⁵ »‘But you trusted your beauty. You used your fame to become a prostitute. You had sex with everyone who walked by.

²⁵ »You dragged your beauty through the mud. You offered yourself to everyone who came by, and you were more of a prostitute every day. ²⁶ »You let your lustful neighbors, the Egyptians, go to bed with you, and you used your prostitution to make me angry. ²⁷ »Now I have raised my hand to punish you and to take away your share of my blessing. I have handed you over to the Philistines, who hate you. They are also disgusted with your immoral actions. ²⁸ »The others did not satisfy you so you ran after the Assyrians. You were their prostitute, but they did not satisfy you either. ²⁹ »You were also a prostitute for the Babylonians, that nation of merchants, but they did not satisfy you either. ³⁰ »I, the Lord Jehovah am furious with you. You were so disgusting that you would have done anything to get what you wanted. ³¹ »You had sex on every street corner, and when you finished, you refused to accept money. That is worse than being a prostitute! ³² »You are an unfaithful wife who would rather have sex with strangers than with your own husband. ³³ »Prostitutes accept money for having sex, but you bribe men from everywhere to have sex with you. ³⁴ »You are not like other prostitutes. Men do not ask you for sex. You offer to pay them! ³⁵ »Jerusalem, you prostitute, listen to the word of Jehovah. ³⁶ »You chased after lovers, then took off your clothes and had sex. You even worshiped disgusting idols and sacrificed your own children as offerings to them.

⁵ »Oholah played the prostitute while she was mine; and she lusted after her lovers, after the Assyrians, her neighbors. ⁶ »The Assyrians were clothed in purple, governors and officials, all of them desirable young men, horsemen riding on horses. ⁷ »She gave her acts of fornication to them, all of whom were the choicest men of Assyria; and with all whom she lusted after, with all their idols she defiled herself. ⁸ »She did not forsake her acts of fornication from the time in Egypt. In her youth men had lain with her. They handled her virgin bosom and poured out their lust on her. ⁹ »Therefore, I gave her into the hand of her lovers, into the hand of the Assyrians, after whom she lusted. ¹⁰ »They uncovered her nakedness. They took her sons and her daughters, but they killed her with the sword. Thus she became a byword among women, and they executed judgments on her. ¹¹ »Now her sister Oholibah saw this, yet she was more corrupt in her lust than she. And she saw men portrayed on the wall, images of the Chaldeans portrayed with vermilion (reddish-orange color), ¹⁵ girded with belts on their loins, with flowing turbans on their heads, all of them looking like officers, like the Babylonians in Chaldea, the land of their birth. ¹⁶ »When she saw them she lusted after them and sent messengers to them in Chaldea. ¹⁷ »The Babylonians came to her, to the bed of love, and defiled her with their acts of prostitution. When they had defiled her, she became disgusted with them. ¹⁸ »She uncovered her acts if prostitution and uncovered her nakedness. I became disgusted with her, as I had become disgusted with her sister. ¹⁹ »Yet she multiplied her acts of prostitution. She remembered the days of her youth, when she prostituted herself in the land of Egypt. ²⁰ »She lusted after their paramours, whose flesh is like the flesh of donkeys and whose genital organ is like the genital organ of horses. ²¹ »Thus you longed for the lewdness of your youth, when the Egyptians handled your bosom because of the breasts of your youth.

² »Plead with your mother (your nation), for she is not my wife, neither am I her husband. Let her put away her acts of adultery from her face, and her adulteries from between her breasts! ³ »I will strip her naked and make her as in the day that she was born. I will make her as a wilderness, and make her like a dry land, and kill her with thirst. ⁴ »I will show no mercy to her children for they are children of fornication. ⁵ Their mother played the harlot. She that conceived them acted shamefully! For she said, I will go after my lovers, who give me my bread and my water, my wool and my flax, my oil and my drink.

³⁶ »After David served his own generation by doing the will of God he died and was buried with his fathers. His body decayed.

² »with whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication.« ³ So he carried me away in spirit to the wilderness. I saw a woman sitting upon a scarlet-colored beast. The beast was full of names of blasphemy. It had seven heads and ten horns. ⁴ The woman was clothed in purple and scarlet. She was adorned with gold and precious stones and pearls. She had a golden cup in her hand. It was full of abominations and the filthiness of her fornication. ⁵ A name was written on her forehead, a mystery, »Babylon the Great, the mother of the harlots and of the abominations of the earth.«

² »True and righteous are his judgments: for he has judged the great harlot, who corrupted the earth with her fornication. And has avenged the blood of his servants at her hand.«
