³⁵ »Vengeance and retribution belong to me. (Vengeance is mine, I will repay.) Their foot shall slide in time, for the day of their calamity is at hand. The things to come on them come quickly.

¹⁷ King Hazael of Syria attacked the city of Gath and conquered it. Then he decided to attack Jerusalem. ¹⁸ King Jehoash of Judah took all the offerings that his predecessors Jehoshaphat, Jehoram, and Ahaziah had dedicated to Jehovah, added to them his own offerings and all the gold in the treasuries of the Temple and the palace, and sent them all as a gift to King Hazael, who then led his army away from Jerusalem.

¹⁷ After the death of Jehoiada the priest, the leaders of Judah went to Joash and talked him into doing what they wanted. ¹⁸ The people of Judah stopped worshiping in the Temple of Jehovah God. They started worshiping idols and the symbols of the goddess Asherah. These sinful things made Jehovah God angry with the people of Judah and Jerusalem,

¹⁰ Listen you kings, be wise (show discernment) and be warned you rulers of the earth. ¹¹ Serve Jehovah with deep respect and rejoice with trembling.

¹⁰ The righteous shall rejoice when he sees the vengeance. He shall wash his feet in the blood of the wicked. ¹¹ Men will say: Truly there is a reward for the righteous. Truly there is a God who judges the earth.
