¹² Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen. He said: »Jehovah helped us all the way.« He named it: »Stone of Help.«

¹⁴ Abraham named that place »Jehovah Will Provide.« It is still said today: »It will be provided on the mountain of Jehovah.«

¹⁸ Early the next morning Jacob took the stone he had under his head. He set it up as a marker and poured oil on top of it. ¹⁹ He named that place Bethel (House of God). Previously, the name of the city was Luz.

Here is the marker that I have set up between you and me. ⁵² »This pile of stones and this marker stand as witnesses that I will not go past the pile of stones to harm you, and that you will not go past the pile of stones or marker to harm me.

¹⁴ So Jacob set up a memorial, a stone marker, to mark the place where God had spoken with him. He poured a wine offering and olive oil on it.

⁹ Joshua set up twelve stones in the middle of the Jordan River, in the place where the feet of the priests who carried the Ark of the Covenant stood, and they are there to this day.

²⁶ Joshua wrote these commands in the Book of the Law of God. Then he took a large stone and set it up under the oak tree in Jehovah’s sanctuary. ²⁷ He told the people: »This stone will serve as our witness. It has heard all the words that Jehovah spoke to us. So it will be a witness against you, to keep you from rebelling against your God.«

¹⁹ When that time comes, there will be an altar to Jehovah in the middle of the land of Egypt and a stone pillar dedicated to him at the Egyptian border.

³ »Listen to me, O house of Jacob, all you who remain of the house of Israel. I have upheld you since you were conceived. I have carried you since your birth. ⁴ Even in your old age with gray hair I am he, I am he who will support you. I have made you and I will bear your burden (take care of you). I will sustain (support) (strengthen) you and I will rescue you (keep you safe).

²² »Having obtained help from God, I continue to this day, witnessing both to small and great, saying no other things than those that the prophets and Moses said should come.

¹⁰ God delivered us out of so great a death, and will deliver us. We have set our hope on him. He will deliver us!
