1 One day the Philistines brought their soldiers together to attack Israel. Achish told David: »You and your men must fight as part of our Philistine army.«
2 David answered: »That will give you a chance to see for yourself just how well we can fight!« Achish said: »You and your men will always be my bodyguards.«
3 After Samuel died all the Israelites mourned for him. They buried him in his hometown of Ramah. Saul forced all the fortunetellers and mediums to leave Israel.
4 The Philistine troops assembled and camped near the town of Shunem. Saul gathered the Israelites and camped at Mount Gilboa.
5 Saul was terrified when he saw the Philistine army.
6 So he asked Jehovah what to do. But Jehovah did not answer him. He did not answer by dreams or by the use of Urim and Thummim or by prophets.
7 Saul ordered his officials: »Find me a woman who is a medium. I will go and consult her.« »There is one in Endor,« they answered.
8 Saul disguised himself. He put on different clothes. After dark he went with two of his men to see the woman. »Consult the spirits for me and tell me what is going to happen,« he said to her: »Call up the spirit of the man I name.«
9 The woman answered: »You know what King Saul has done? He forced the fortunetellers and mediums to leave Israel. Are you trying to trap me and get me killed?«
10 Saul made a sacred vow. »By the living God Jehovah I promise that you will not be punished for doing this,« he told her.
11 »Whom shall I call up for you?« The woman asked. »Samuel,« he answered.
12 The woman saw Samuel. She screamed and said to Saul, »Why have you tricked me? You are King Saul!«
13 »Do not be afraid!« The king said to her. »What do you see?« She answered: »I see a spirit coming up from the earth.«
14 »The spirit, what does it look like?« He asked. »It is an old man,« she answered. »He wears a cloak.« Saul knew it was Samuel. So he bowed to the ground in respect.
15 Samuel said to Saul: »Why have you disturbed me? Why did you make me come back?« Saul answered: »I am in great trouble! The Philistines are at war with me. God has abandoned me. He does not answer me any more by prophets or by dreams. Please tell me what to do.«
16 Samuel said: »Why do you call me when Jehovah has abandoned you and become your enemy?
17 »Jehovah did to you what he told you through me. He took the kingdom away from you and gave it to David instead.
18 »You disobeyed Jehovah’s command and did not completely destroy the Amalekites. That is why Jehovah is doing this to you.
19 »He will give you and Israel over to the Philistines. Tomorrow you and your sons will join me. Jehovah will also give the army of Israel over to the Philistines.«
20 At once Saul fell down and lay stretched out on the ground. He was terrified by what Samuel said. He was weak because he had not eaten anything all day and all night.
21 The woman went to him. She saw that he was terrified. So she said to him: »I risked my life by doing what you asked.
22 »Now please do what I ask. Let me fix you some food. You must eat so that you will be strong enough to travel.«
23 Saul refused. He said he would not eat. But his officers also urged him to eat. He finally gave in, got up from the ground, and sat on the bed.
24 The woman quickly butchered a calf she had fattened. Then she took some flour and prepared it. She baked some bread without yeast.
25 She set the food before Saul and his officers and they ate. They left that same night.

16 For their feet run to evil. They hurry to shed blood.
17 Surely in vain the net is spread in the sight of any bird.
18 They lie in wait for their own blood (murder). They set an ambush for their own lives.
19 So are the ways of everyone who is greedy for unjust dishonest gain. Greed takes away the life of its owner.

21 She calls in the streets, in the opening of the gates: in the city she utters her words. She says:

1 The proverbs 0f Solomon son of David, king of Israel:
2 To know wisdom and instruction. To discern and understand words.
3 To receive instruction with wisdom, justice, judgment and integrity.
4 To give wisdom and refinement to the simple. To the young man knowledge and discretion.
5 A wise man will hear and will increase learning. A man of understanding will procure wise counsel.
6 This will help him understand a proverb and the interpretation as well as the words of the wise and their riddles.
7 Respect for Jehovah (YHWH) is the beginning of knowledge (truth) (understanding) (wisdom). Fools despise wisdom and instruction.
8 My son, listen to the instruction of your father. Do not forsake the law of your mother.
9 Discipline and education are a graceful ornament on your head, and a golden chain around your neck.
10 My son, if sinners tempt you do not consent.
11 If they say: »Come with us. Let us lie in wait to kill someone. Let us ambush the innocent without cause.
12 »Let us swallow them alive and whole just as the grave does, and just as the dead go into the pit.
13 »We will find precious material possessions and we fill our houses with plunder.
14 »Throw in with us. Let us all have one purse.«
Proverbs 14:14
14 The faithless in heart will be filled with his own ways: and a good man shall be satisfied from above.
Proverbs 25:20
20 Like the man does not wear a coat in winter, or like vinegar on soda, so is he who sings songs to a heavy heart.
Proverbs 16:4
4 Jehovah made all things for himself even the wicked one for the evil day.
Proverbs 27:1-28:28
1 Do not brag about tomorrow for you do not know what a day may bring.
2 Let another man praise you and not your own mouth, a stranger, and not your own lips.
3 A stone is heavy, and the sand weighty; but a fool's anger is heavier than them both.
4 Wrath is cruel, and anger is outrageous; but who is able to stand before envy?
5 Open rebuke is better than secret love.
6 Faithful are the wounds of a friend, but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.
7 The full person dislikes the honeycomb, but to the hungry every bitter thing is sweet.
8 As a bird that wanders from her nest, so is a man who wanders from his place.
9 As oil and perfume delight the heart so the sweetness of a man's friend delights his heart.
10 Do not forget your friends or your father's friends. If you are in trouble, do not ask a relative for help. A nearby neighbor can help you more than relatives who are far away.
11 Be wise, my son, and make my heart happy and I will have an answer for anyone who criticizes (taunts) (torments) me.
12 A prudent man anticipates evil and hides; but the simple pass on, and are punished.
13 Take his garment that is surety for a stranger, and take him as pledge as surety for a fornicator.
14 He that blesses his friend with a loud voice, rising early in the morning, it shall be counted a curse to him.
15 Continual dripping on a very rainy day and a contentious woman are alike.
16 Trying to stop her is like trying to stop the wind, or holding something with greased hands.
17 Just as iron sharpens iron so one man sharpens another.
18 When you keep a fig tree you eat the fruit. He who waits on his master will be honored.
19 As in water face reflects face, the heart of man is reveals the man.
20 The grave and destruction are never full; so the eyes of man are never satisfied.
21 The refining pot is for silver. The furnace is for gold. A man is valued by what others say about him.
22 Though you grind a fool in mortar his foolishness will not depart from him.
23 Be diligent to know the state of your flocks and attend to your herds.
24 Riches are not forever: and a crown does not endure for every generation.
25 The hay appears and the tender grass shows itself. Herbs of the mountains are gathered.
26 The lambs are for your clothing, and the goats bring the price of the field.
27 You will have enough goats' milk for your food, for the food of your household, and for the maintenance for your maidservants.
Proverbs 28:1-28
1 The wicked run when no man pursues, but the righteous are bold as a lion.
2 There are many princes after the transgression of a land. But a man of understanding and knowledge remains for a long time.
3 A poor man that oppresses the poor is like a sweeping rain that leaves no food.
4 They who forsake the law praise the wicked. Those who obey the law oppose them.
5 Evil men do not understand justice. Those who seek Jehovah understand all things.
6 Better is the poor man who walks in uprightness, than the rich man who is perverse in his ways.
7 He who obeys the law is a wise son. But he who is a companion of worthless men shames his father.
8 He who becomes wealthy through unfair loans and interest collects them for the one who pitys the poor.
9 The prayer of the person who will not listen to the law is disgusting.
10 Whoever leads decent people into evil will fall into his own pit. Innocent people will inherit good things.
11 A rich person is wise in his own eyes, but the poor who has understanding, sees right through him.
12 When righteous people rejoice, there is great glory, but when wicked people rise, people hide themselves.
13 The man who covers his sins will not be blessed; but whoever confesses and leaves them will have mercy.
14 Blessed is the man reverencing God. He who hardens his heart will fall into trouble.
15 Like a roaring lion and a charging bear, so is a wicked ruler over the helpless people.
16 The ruler who lacks understanding is a great oppressor. He who hates covetousness will prolong his days.
17 A violent and bloodthirsty man will run to the pit; let no man help him.
18 Whoever walks blamelessly will be saved: but he who is perverse in his ways will fall at once.
19 He who tills his land will have plenty of bread. He who follows after vain persons will have poverty.
20 A faithful man will have many blessings. But he who hurries to be rich will not go unpunished.
21 It is not good to show partiality for a man will transgress for a piece of bread.
22 He who hurries to be rich has an evil eye. He does not think poverty will come to him.
23 He who reproves a man later find more favor than he who flatters with the tongue.
24 Whoever robs his father or mother, and says: »It is no transgression;« the same is the companion of a man who destroys.
25 The person with a proud heart stirs up discord. The person who trusts Jehovah will prosper.
26 He who trusts in his own heart is a fool. He who walks wisely will be delivered.
27 He who gives to the poor will not lack. But he who hides his eyes will have many curses.
28 When the wicked rise people hide, but when they die, the righteous increase.
