²¹ For this you were called because Christ also suffered for you. He left you an example (a copy for imitation) (a model) that you should follow in his steps.

²⁴ Then Jesus told his disciples: »If any man wants to follow me (be mine), let him deny (disown) himself, and take up his stake and follow me (Greek: akoloutheo moi, let him be following me) (accompany me) (be in the same way with me).

³⁴ He then spoke to both his disciples and the crowd. He said: »If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his stake and follow me. ³⁵ »Whoever would save his life will lose it. Whoever would lose his life for my sake and the sake of the Good News will save it.

²⁵ »For what does it profit a man if he gain the whole world, and lose or forfeit his own self?

²³ He told them all: »If any man would come after me let him deny himself. Let him take up his stake (of self-denial) daily, and follow me. ²⁴ »He who would save his life shall lose it. He who would lose his life for my sake shall save it.

²⁶ »You who come to me may not be my disciple unless you love me more than you love your father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters and yourself. ²⁷ »Those who do not carry their own stake and come after me may not be my disciples.

²⁶ »Did the Christ need to suffer these things and enter into his glory?«

¹⁵ »I have given you an example. You should also do as I have done to you.

³³ »I spoke to you that in me you might have peace. In the world you have tribulation. Be of good cheer for I have conquered the world!«

²² They strengthened the disciples and encouraged them to continue in the faith. They said, »We must enter the kingdom of God through much tribulation.«

³ He explained and proved that Christ had to suffer and rise from the dead. And that Jesus is the Messiah.

²⁹ Those he first recognized, he ordained in advance that they be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.

¹ Be followers (imitators) of me, even as I also am of Christ.

² Walk in love, even as Christ also loved you, and gave himself up for us. He was an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet smelling odor.

⁵ Have this attitude (mind-set) (understanding) (mental state) in you that was also in Christ Jesus.

³ We do not want anyone to be discouraged by these troubles. You know we were bound to suffer persecution.

² You know the commandments we gave you through the Lord Jesus.

¹² Yes, and all who would live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.

¹⁰ It was appropriate that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, should bring many sons to glory, to make the Chief Agent of their salvation perfect through suffering.

²⁰ Jesus was known before the foundation of the world. He was made known at the end times for your sake.

²⁴ He bore our sins in his body upon the stake, that we, having died to sins, might live to righteousness. You were healed because of his wounds (stripes).

⁹ Do not repay evil for evil, or insult for insult. Do just the opposite. For you were called to inherit a blessing.

¹⁸ Because Christ also suffered for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God. He was put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit.

¹ Since Christ suffered physically for us, you too must strengthen yourselves with the same way of thinking that he had. Whoever suffers physically has ceased from sin.

⁶ He that says he lives in union with him should walk as he walked.

¹⁶ By this we know love, because he (Jesus) gave his life for us. We ought to lay down our lives for our brothers.
