³⁰ For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep.

²⁶ He said: »If you will listen carefully to Jehovah your God and do what he considers right, if you pay attention to his commands and obey all his laws, I will never make you suffer any of the diseases I made the Egyptians suffer. I am Jehovah, who heals you.«

¹² Jehovah said to Moses and Aaron: »You did not trust me! You did not show the Israelites how holy I am! So you will not bring this congregation into the land I am giving them.«

²⁴ »Aaron is not going to enter the land I promised to give to Israel. He is going to die, because the two of you rebelled against my command at Meribah.

⁶ Jehovah sent poisonous snakes among the people. They bit the people, and many of the Israelites died. ⁷ The people came to Moses and said: »We sinned when we criticized Jehovah and you. Pray to Jehovah so that he will take the snakes away from us. So Moses prayed for the people.« ⁸ Jehovah said to Moses: »Make a snake and put it on a pole. Anyone who is bitten can look at it and live.« ⁹ Moses made a copper snake and put it on a pole. People looked at the copper snake after they were bitten and lived.

¹⁴ »You have shown total contempt for Jehovah by this affair. Therefore the son that is born to you must die.« ¹⁵ Nathan went home. Jehovah struck the child that Uriah’s wife had given birth to David. The child became sick. ¹⁶ David pleaded with God for the child. He fasted and lay on the ground all night. ¹⁷ The elders in his palace stood beside him to raise him up from the ground. But he was unwilling and he would not eat with them. ¹⁸ On the seventh day the child died. David’s servants were afraid to tell him that the child was dead. They thought: »While the child was alive, we talked to him, and he would not listen to us. How can we tell him the child is dead? He may harm himself.«

²¹ Crying out to the man of God who came from Judah, he said: »Jehovah says, ‘because you have gone against the voice of Jehovah, and have not done as Jehovah ordered you, ²² but have come back, and have taken food and water in this place where he said you were to take no food or water; your dead body will not be put to rest with your fathers.’« ²³ After the meal he made the donkey ready for the prophet whom he had taken back. ²⁴ He went on his way. A lion met him on the road and jumped him and killed him. His dead body was stretched in the road with the donkey by its side. The lion was by the body.

¹ ([Psalm of David]) O Jehovah, do not correct me or discipline me in your burning anger. ² Your arrows have struck me. Your hand has struck me hard. ³ No healthy spot is left on my body because of your rage. There is no peace in my bones because of my sin. ⁴ My guilt has overwhelmed me. Like a heavy load, it is more than I can bear. ⁵ My wounds smell rotten. They fester because of my stupidity. ⁶ I am bent over and bowed down very low. All day I walk around in sadness. ⁷ My insides are filled with burning pain, and no healthy spot is left on my body. ⁸ I am numb and completely devastated. I roar because my heart is filling with anguish.

³⁰ Before they had satisfied their desire, while their food was in their mouths, ³¹ The anger of God rose against them and killed some of their stoutest ones, and subdued the choice men of Israel.

³¹ if they violate my statutes and do not obey my commandments, ³² then with a rod I will punish their transgression and their crimes with beatings. ³³ But I will not take my loving kindness away from him or allow my truth to become perverted. ³⁴ I will not dishonor my promise or alter my own agreement.

² »Of all the families of the earth I have chosen (known) only you. Therefore I will punish you for all your sins.

³⁶ »After David served his own generation by doing the will of God he died and was buried with his fathers. His body decayed.

³² But when we are judged, Jehovah disciplines us, that we should not be destroyed (condemned) with the world. (Proverbs 3:11)

⁵¹ Behold, I show you a secret. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,

¹⁴ If we believe that Jesus died and rose again, God will bring with him those who sleep in Jesus.

⁵ You have forgotten the exhortation that reasons with you as to sons: »My son, do not despise (regard lightly) discipline from Jehovah and do not lose heart when he corrects you. (Proverbs 3:11, 12) ⁶ »Jehovah disciplines those he loves. In fact he scourges every son (child) he receives.« ⁷ God deals with you like children. Endure discipline (instruction) (training). Who is the child whom a father does not discipline? ⁸ If you are without discipline, you are illegitimate children, and not sons. ⁹ Furthermore, we have had fathers of our flesh that corrected us, and we gave them respect. Shall we not much more be in subjection to the Father of spirits and live? ¹⁰ They disciplined us for a few days for their own pleasure. He disciplines for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness. ¹¹ Now no discipline for the present seems to be joyous. In fact it seems grievous! Nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained.

¹⁹ »'I reprove and discipline those whom I love: be zealous therefore, and repent.
