² King David stood there and said: »Listen to me relatives (brothers and sisters) and subjects. I had my heart set on building the Temple where the Ark of Jehovah’s Covenant could be placed. This Temple will be a stool for our God’s feet, and I have made preparations to build it.«

² Jacob was told that his son Joseph had come to see him. He gathered his strength and sat up in bed.

¹⁵ you shall surely set a king over you whom Jehovah your God chooses. It will be one from among your countrymen. You may not put a foreigner over yourselves who is not your countryman.

²⁰ »He must not think he is better than the rest of his people. He will not disobey these commandments in any way. So he and his sons will rule for a long time in Israel.

¹ King David was settled in his palace. Jehovah kept him safe from all his enemies. ² The king said to the prophet Nathan: »I live in a house built of cedar. Yet the Ark of God is kept in a tent!«

⁴⁷ »Even the royal officials have come to congratulate His Majesty King David, saying: May your God make Solomon's name more famous than yours and his reign greater than your reign. The king himself bowed down on his bed

¹⁷ Solomon continued: »My father David planned to build a temple for the worship of Jehovah the God of Israel, ¹⁸ »‘Jehovah said to him: ‘You were right in wanting to build a temple for me.

¹ Then all Israel came together to David at Hebron. They said: »Indeed we are your bone and your flesh. ² »In time past, even when Saul was king, you were the one who led Israel out and brought them in.« Jehovah your God said to you: »You will shepherd my people Israel, and be ruler over my people Israel.« ³ Therefore all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron. David made a covenant with them at Hebron in the presence of Jehovah. Then they anointed David king over Israel, according to the word of Jehovah by Samuel.

³¹ These are the men David put in charge of the music in the house of Jehovah after the ark came to rest there.

² So David gave orders to assemble the foreigners living in Israel. He appointed stonecutters from among them to prepare dressed stone for building the house of God. ³ He provided a large amount of iron to make nails for the doors of the gateways and for the fittings, and more copper than could be weighed. ⁴ He also provided more cedar logs than could be counted. The Sidonians and Tyrians had brought large numbers of them to David. ⁵ David said: »My son Solomon is young and inexperienced. The house to be built for Jehovah should be of great magnificence and fame and splendor in the sight of all the nations. Therefore I will make preparations for it. So David made extensive preparations before his death.«

¹⁴ »I have taken great pains to provide for the temple of Jehovah three thousand seven hundred and fifty tons of gold, about thirty-seven thousand five hundred tons of silver, quantities of copper and iron too great to be weighed, and wood and stone. And you may add to them.

¹ David settled in his palace. He said to Nathan the prophet: »Here I am, living in a palace of cedar, while the Ark of the Covenant of Jehovah is under a tent.« ² Nathan replied to David: »Do what you have in mind, for God is with you.«

⁷ David took the gold shields that Hadadezer’s servants carried. He brought them to Jerusalem. ⁸ David also took a large quantity of bronze from Tibhath and Cun, Hadadezer’s cities. Later Solomon used it to make the pool, pillars, and utensils for the temple. ⁹ When King Tou of Hamath heard that David had defeated the whole army of Zobah’s King Hadadezer, ¹⁰ he sent his son Hadoram to greet King David and congratulate him for fighting and defeating Hadadezer. There had often been war between Hadadezer and Tou. ¹¹ King David dedicated all the articles of gold, silver, and bronze to Jehovah, along with the silver and gold he had taken from other nations-from Edom, Moab, Ammon, the Philistines, and Amalek.

²² I will tell my people about your name. I will praise you within the congregation.

⁵ Exalt Jehovah our God and worship at his footstool! (Isaiah 66:1) He is holy.

³ He said: »I will not step inside my house, ⁴ get into my bed, shut my eyes, or close my eyelids ⁵ until I find a place for Jehovah, a dwelling place for the Mighty One of Jacob.« ⁶ Now, we have heard about the Ark of the Covenant being in Ephrathah. We found it in Jaar. ⁷ Let us go to his dwelling place. Let us worship at his footstool. ⁸ O Jehovah, arise, and come to your resting place with the ark of your power.

¹⁴ This will be my resting place forever. Here I will sit enthroned because I want Zion.

¹ This is what Jehovah says: »Heaven is my throne. Earth is my footstool. Where can you people build a house or resting place for me?

¹ In his anger Jehovah covered Zion with clouds of darkness. He changed its heavenly splendor into ruins. On the day of his anger he abandoned even his footstool.

⁴⁹ »Heaven is my throne, and earth is my footstool. What house will you build me? Said Jehovah God. What is the place of my rest? (Isaiah 66:1)

¹¹ Both he who sanctifies and they who are sanctified are all from one. For this reason Jesus is not ashamed to call them »brothers«. ¹² He says: »I will declare your name to my brothers; in the middle of the congregation I will sing praises to you.«
