¹ [A meditation by David, which he sang to the LORD, concerning the words of Cush, the Benjamite.] LORD, my God, I take refuge in you. Save me from all those who pursue me, and deliver me, ² lest they tear apart my soul like a lion, ripping it in pieces, while there is none to deliver. ³ LORD, my God, if I have done this, if there is iniquity in my hands, ⁴ if I have rewarded evil to him who was at peace with me, or oppressed my enemy without cause, ⁵ let the enemy pursue my soul, and overtake it; yes, let him tread my life down to the earth, and lay my glory in the dust. Selah. ⁶ Arise, LORD, in your anger. Lift up yourself against the rage of my adversaries. Awake, my God; you have appointed judgment. ⁷ And let the congregation of the peoples surround you, and rule over them on high. ⁸ The LORD administers judgment to the peoples. Judge me, LORD, according to my righteousness, and to my integrity that is in me. ⁹ Oh let the wickedness of the wicked come to an end, but establish the righteous. The righteous God tests hearts and minds. ¹⁰ My shield is with God, who saves the upright in heart. ¹¹ God is a righteous judge, yes, a God who has indignation every day. ¹² If a man doesn't relent, he will sharpen his sword; he has bent and strung his bow. ¹³ He has also prepared for himself deadly weapons. He makes ready his flaming arrows. ¹⁴ Look, he travails with iniquity. Yes, he has conceived mischief, and brought forth falsehood. ¹⁵ He has dug a hole, and has fallen into the pit which he made. ¹⁶ The trouble he causes shall return to his own head, and his violence shall come down on the crown of his own head. ¹⁷ I will give thanks to the LORD according to his righteousness, and will sing praise to the name of the LORD Most High.

⁸ Nevertheless, my brothers who went up with me made the heart of the people melt; but I wholly followed the LORD my God.

¹ When David was a little past the top, look, Ziba the servant of Mippibaal met him, with a couple of donkeys saddled, and on them two hundred loaves of bread, and one hundred clusters of raisins, and one hundred summer fruits, and a bottle of wine. ² The king said to Ziba, "What do you mean by these?" Ziba said, "The donkeys are for the king's household to ride on; and the bread and summer fruit for the young men to eat; and the wine, that such as are faint in the wilderness may drink." ³ The king said, "Where is your master's son?" Ziba said to the king, "Look, he is staying in Jerusalem; for he said, 'Today the house of Israel will restore me the kingdom of my father.'" ⁴ Then the king said to Ziba, "Look, all that pertains to Mippibaal is yours." Ziba said, "I do obeisance. Let me find favor in your sight, my lord, O king." ⁵ When king David came to Bahurim, look, a man of the family of the house of Saul came out, whose name was Shimei, the son of Gera. He came out, and cursed still as he came. ⁶ He cast stones at David, and at all the servants of king David, and all the people and all the mighty men were on his right hand and on his left. ⁷ Shimei said when he cursed, "Be gone, be gone, you man of blood, and base fellow. ⁸ The LORD has returned on you all the blood of the house of Saul, in whose place you have reigned. The LORD has delivered the kingdom into the hand of Absalom your son. Look, you are caught by your own mischief, because you are a man of blood." ⁹ Then Abishai the son of Zeruiah said to the king, "Why should this dead dog curse my lord the king? Please let me go over and take off his head." ¹⁰ The king said, "What have I to do with you, you sons of Zeruiah? Because he curses, and because the LORD has said to him, 'Curse David;' who then shall say, 'Why have you done so?'" ¹¹ David said to Abishai, and to all his servants, "Look, my son, who came forth from my bowels, seeks my life. How much more this Benjamite, now? Leave him alone, and let him curse; for the LORD has invited him. ¹² It may be that the LORD will look on my affliction and return good to me for his cursing today." ¹³ So David and his men went by the way; and Shimei went along on the hillside opposite him, and cursed as he went, threw stones at his flank, and threw dirt. ¹⁴ The king, and all the people who were with him, arrived weary at the Jordan, and he refreshed himself there. ¹⁵ Absalom, and all the people, the men of Israel, came to Jerusalem, and Ahithophel with him. ¹⁶ It happened, when Hushai the Archite, David's friend, had come to Absalom, that Hushai said to Absalom, "Long live the king. Long live the king." ¹⁷ Absalom said to Hushai, "Is this your kindness to your friend? Why did you not go with your friend?" ¹⁸ Hushai said to Absalom, "No; but whomever the LORD, and this people, and all the men of Israel have chosen, his will I be, and with him I will stay. ¹⁹ Again, whom should I serve? Shouldn't I serve in the presence of his son? As I have served in your father's presence, so will I be in your presence." ²⁰ Then Absalom said to Ahithophel, "Give your counsel what we shall do." ²¹ Ahithophel said to Absalom, "Go in to your father's secondary wives, that he has left to keep the house. Then all Israel will hear that you are abhorred by your father. Then the hands of all who are with you will be strong." ²² So they spread Absalom a tent on the top of the house; and Absalom went in to his father's secondary wives in the sight of all Israel. ²³ The counsel of Ahithophel, which he gave in those days, was as if a man inquired at the oracle of God: so was all the counsel of Ahithophel both with David and with Absalom.

⁷ Arise, LORD. Save me, my God. For you slap all my enemies in the face. You break the teeth of the wicked.

¹ [For the Chief Musician. By David.] In the LORD, I take refuge. How can you say to my soul, "Flee as a bird to your mountain."

³ Look, and answer me, LORD, my God. Give light to my eyes, lest I sleep in death;

⁵ But I trust in your loving kindness. My heart rejoices in your salvation.

⁷ Show your marvelous loving kindness, you who save those who take refuge by your right hand from their enemies. ⁸ Keep me as the apple of your eye. Hide me under the shadow of your wings, ⁹ from the wicked who oppress me, my deadly enemies, who surround me.

² The LORD is my Rock, my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my Rock, in whom I take refuge; my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower.

²⁸ For you light my lamp. The LORD my God lights up my darkness.

² My God, I have trusted in you. Do not let me be shamed. Do not let my enemies triumph over me.

¹ [By David.] Judge me, LORD, for I have walked in my integrity. I have trusted also in LORD without wavering.

² LORD my God, I cried to you, and you have healed me.

¹² To the end that my heart may sing praise to you, and not be silent. LORD my God, I will give thanks to you forever.

¹⁵ My times are in your hand. Deliver me from the hand of my enemies, and from those who persecute me.

¹⁰ Many sorrows come to the wicked, but loving kindness shall surround him who trusts in the LORD.

¹ [By David.] Contend, LORD, with those who contend with me. Fight against those who fight against me. ² Take hold of shield and buckler, and stand up for my help. ³ Brandish the spear and block those who pursue me. Tell my soul, "I am your salvation."

⁴ Then I will go to the altar of God, to God, my exceeding joy. I will praise you on the harp, God, my God.

²⁶ He will call to me, 'You are my Father, my God, and the rock of my salvation.'

³ Do not put your trust in princes, each a son of man in whom there is no help. ⁴ His spirit departs, and he returns to the earth. In that very day, his thoughts perish. ⁵ Blessed is the one who has the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in the LORD his God, ⁶ who made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them; who keeps truth forever;

¹⁰ Who is among you who fears the LORD, who listens to the voice of his servant? He who walks in darkness, and has no light, let him trust in the name of the LORD, and rely on his God.

¹⁵ "LORD, you know; remember me, and visit me, and avenge me of my persecutors; do not take me away in your longsuffering: know that for your sake I have suffered reproach.

¹¹ But the LORD is with me as an awesome mighty one: therefore my persecutors shall stumble, and they shall not prevail; they shall be utterly disappointed, because they have not dealt wisely, even with an everlasting dishonor which shall never be forgotten.

¹⁸ I have surely heard Ephraim bemoaning himself thus, 'You have chastised me, and I was chastised, as an untrained calf: turn me, and I shall be turned; for you are the LORD my God.

⁴ I prayed to the LORD my God, and made this confession, "O Lord, the great and awesome God, who keeps his covenant and loving kindness with those who love him and keep his commandments.

¹⁹ Lord, hear. Lord, forgive. Lord, listen and take action. Do not delay, for your own sake, my God, because your city and your people are called by your name." ²⁰ While I was speaking, and praying, and confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my petition before the LORD my God for the holy mountain of my God,

⁵ Then you shall flee by the valley of my mountains; for the valley of the mountains shall reach to Azel; yes, you shall flee, just like you fled from before the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah. Then the LORD my God will come, and all the holy ones with him.

²¹ who through him are believers in God, who raised him from the dead, and gave him glory; so that your faith and hope might be in God.

¹⁹ Therefore let them also who suffer according to the will of God in doing good entrust their souls to him, as to a faithful Creator.

²⁰ Of Gad he said, "He who enlarges Gad is blessed. He dwells as a lioness, and tears the arm, yes, the crown of the head.

²⁸ There was no deliverer, because it was far from Sidon, and they had no dealings with anyone, and it was in the valley that lies by Beth Rehob. They built the city, and lived there.

⁶ Your handmaid had two sons, and they both fought together in the field, and there was no one to part them, but the one struck the other, and killed him.

⁷ Although you know that I am not wicked, there is no one who can deliver out of your hand.

⁹ He lurks in secret as a lion in his ambush. He lies in wait to catch the helpless. He catches the helpless, when he draws him in his net.

¹² He is like a lion that is greedy of his prey, as it were a young lion lurking in secret places.

¹³ They open their mouths wide against me, like a lion tearing prey and roaring.

¹⁵ But in my adversity, they rejoiced, and gathered themselves together. The attackers gathered themselves together against me, and I did not know it. They tore at me, and did not cease.

²² "Now consider this, you who forget God, lest I tear you into pieces, and there be none to deliver.

¹² The king's wrath is like the roaring of a lion, but his favor is like dew on the grass.

¹³ I waited patiently until morning. He breaks all my bones like a lion. From day even to night you will make an end of me.

⁷ Therefore I am like a lion to them. Like a leopard, I will lurk by the path. ⁸ I will meet them like a bear that is bereaved of her cubs, and will tear the covering of their heart. There I will devour them like a lioness. The wild animal will tear them.

¹⁷ But the Lord stood by me, and strengthened me, that through me the message might be fully proclaimed, and that all the non-Jewish people might hear; and I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion.

⁸ Be sober and self-controlled. Be watchful. Your adversary the devil, walks around like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.

²² "El, God, the LORD. El, God, the LORD. He knows; and Israel shall know. If it was in rebellion, or if in trespass against the LORD, do not save us this day,

⁸ Therefore deal kindly with your servant; for you have brought your servant into a covenant of the LORD with you: but if there is iniquity in me, kill me yourself; for why should you bring me to your father?"

⁸ that all of you have conspired against me, and there is none who discloses to me when my son makes a covenant with the son of Jesse, and there is none of you who is sorry for me, or discloses to me that my son has stirred up my servant against me, to lie in wait, as at this day?"

¹³ Saul said to him, "Why have you conspired against me, you and the son of Jesse, in that you have given him bread, and a sword, and have inquired of God for him, that he should rise against me, to lie in wait, as at this day?"

⁹ David said to Saul, "Why do you listen to men's words, saying, 'Look, David seeks your harm?'

¹¹ Moreover, my father, look, yes, see the skirt of your robe in my hand; for in that I cut off the skirt of your robe, and did not kill you, know and see that there is neither evil nor disobedience in my hand, and I have not sinned against you, though you hunt for my life to take it.

¹⁸ He said, "Why does my lord pursue after his servant? For what have I done? Or what evil is in my hand? ¹⁹ Now therefore, please let my lord the king hear the words of his servant. If it is so that God has stirred you up against me, let him accept an offering. But if it is from human beings, they are cursed before the LORD; for they have driven me out this day that I shouldn't cling to the LORD's inheritance, saying, 'Go, serve other gods.'

⁷ Shimei said when he cursed, "Be gone, be gone, you man of blood, and base fellow. ⁸ The LORD has returned on you all the blood of the house of Saul, in whose place you have reigned. The LORD has delivered the kingdom into the hand of Absalom your son. Look, you are caught by your own mischief, because you are a man of blood."

¹⁴ If iniquity is in your hand, put it far away. Do not let unrighteousness dwell in your tents.

¹⁷ Although there is no violence in my hands, and my prayer is pure. ¹⁸ "Earth, do not cover my blood. Let my cry have no place to rest. ¹⁹ Even now, look, my witness is in heaven. He who vouches for me is on high.

³ For, look, they lie in wait for my soul. The mighty gather themselves together against me, not for my disobedience, nor for my sin, LORD.

¹⁸ If I cherished sin in my heart, the Lord wouldn't have listened.

⁴ When they were far from the city, Joseph said to his manager, "Up, go after the men, and when you overtake them, ask them, 'Why have you repaid evil for good?

⁴ Jonathan spoke good of David to Saul his father, and said to him, "Do not let the king sin against his servant, against David; because he has not sinned against you, and because his works have been very good toward you; ⁵ for he put his life in his hand, and struck the Philistine, and the LORD worked a great victory for all Israel. You saw it, and rejoiced. Why then will you sin against innocent blood, to kill David without a cause?"

¹ Then David fled from the dwellings at Ramah, and came and said before Jonathan, "What have I done? What is my iniquity? What is my sin before your father, that he seeks my life?"

¹⁴ Then Ahimelech answered the king, and said, "Who among all your servants is so faithful as David, who is the king's son-in-law, and a commander over your bodyguard, and honored in your house?

⁷ So David restrained his men with these words and did not allow them to rise against Saul. And Saul rose up out of the cave, and went on his way.

¹⁰ Look, this day your eyes have seen how that the LORD had delivered you today into my hand in the cave, but I refused to kill you, and my eye spared you; and I said, 'I will not put forth my hand against my lord; for he is the LORD's anointed.' ¹¹ Moreover, my father, look, yes, see the skirt of your robe in my hand; for in that I cut off the skirt of your robe, and did not kill you, know and see that there is neither evil nor disobedience in my hand, and I have not sinned against you, though you hunt for my life to take it. ¹² May the LORD judge between me and you, and may the LORD avenge me of you; but my hand shall not be on you. ¹³ As the proverb of the ancients says, 'Out of the wicked comes forth wickedness;' but my hand shall not be on you. ¹⁴ Against whom has the king of Israel come out? Whom do you pursue? After a dead dog, or one flea? ¹⁵ May the LORD therefore be judge and give sentence between me and you. May he see and plead my cause, and deliver me out of your hand."

¹⁷ He said to David, "You are more righteous than I; for you have done good to me, whereas I have done evil to you. ¹⁸ And you have declared this day how you have dealt well with me, in that the LORD had delivered me up into your hand and you did not kill me. ¹⁹ For if a man finds his enemy, will he let him go away unharmed? Therefore may the LORD reward you good for that which you have done this day.

²⁸ Please forgive the trespass of your handmaid. For the LORD will certainly make my lord a sure house, because my lord fights the battles of the LORD; and evil shall not be found in you all your days. ²⁹ Though men may rise up to pursue you, and to seek your soul, yet the soul of my lord shall be bound in the bundle of life with the LORD your God. He will sling out the souls of your enemies, as from the hollow of a sling.

⁹ David said to Abishai, "Do not destroy him; for who can put forth his hand against the LORD's anointed, and be guiltless?" ¹⁰ David said, "As the LORD lives, the LORD will strike him; or his day shall come to die; or he shall go down into battle and perish. ¹¹ The LORD forbid that I should put forth my hand against the LORD's anointed; but now please take the spear that is at his head, and the jar of water, and let us go." ¹² So David took the spear and the jar of water from Saul's head; and they went away: and no man saw it, nor knew it, neither did any awake; for they were all asleep, because a deep sleep from the LORD was fallen on them. ¹³ Then David went over to the other side, and stood on the top of the mountain afar off; a great space being between them. ¹⁴ And David called to the people, and to Abner the son of Ner, saying, "Do you not answer, Abner?" Then Abner answered, "Who are you that calls?" ¹⁵ David said to Abner, "Aren't you a man? Who is like you in Israel? Why then have you not kept watch over your lord, the king? For one of the people came in to destroy the king your lord. ¹⁶ This thing isn't good that you have done. As the LORD lives, you are worthy to die, because you have not kept watch over your lord, the LORD's anointed. Now look, where is the kingʼs spear, and where is the jar of water that was by his head?" ¹⁷ Saul knew David's voice, and said, "Is this your voice, my son David?" David said, "It is my voice, my lord, O king."

²¹ Then Saul said, "I have sinned. Return, my son David; for I will no more do you harm, because my life was precious in your eyes this day. Look, I have played the fool, and have erred exceedingly."

²⁴ Look, as your life was respected this day in my eyes, so let my life be respected in the eyes of the LORD, and let him deliver me out of all oppression."

²⁰ He has stretched out his hand against those who were at peace with him. He has violated his covenant.

⁵ They have rewarded me evil for good, and hatred for my love.

³ The refining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold, but the LORD tests the hearts.

²⁰ Shall evil be recompensed for good? For they have dug a pit for my soul. Remember how I stood before you to speak good for them, to turn away your wrath from them. ²¹ Therefore deliver up their children to the famine, and give them over to the power of the sword; and let their wives become childless, and widows; and let their men be slain of death, and their young men struck of the sword in battle.

¹⁵ I have sewed sackcloth on my skin, and have thrust my horn in the dust.

⁵ "If I have walked with falsehood, and my foot has hurried to deceit ⁶ (let me be weighed in an even balance, that God may know my integrity); ⁷ if my step has turned out of the way, if my heart walked after my eyes, if any defilement has stuck to my hands, ⁸ then let me sow, and let another eat. Yes, let the produce of my field be rooted out. ⁹ "If my heart has been enticed to a woman, and I have lain in wait at my neighbor's door, ¹⁰ then let my wife grind for another, and let others sleep with her.

³⁸ If my land cries out against me, and its furrows weep together; ³⁹ if I have eaten its fruits without money, or have caused its owners to lose their life, ⁴⁰ let briars grow instead of wheat, and stinkweed instead of barley." The words of Job are ended.

¹² Look at everyone who is proud, and humble him. Crush the wicked in their place. ¹³ Hide them in the dust together. Bind their faces in the hidden place.

² Many there are who say of my soul, "There is no salvation for him in God." Selah.

⁵ Through you we will push back our adversaries. Through your name we will trample down those who rise up against us.

¹² But man, despite his riches, doesn't endure. He is like the animals that perish.

¹² Through God we shall do valiantly, for it is he who will tread down our adversaries.

⁶ I will send him against a profane nation, and against the people who anger me will I give him a command to take the spoil and to take the prey, and to tread them down like the mire of the streets.

³ "I have trodden the winepress alone; and of the peoples there was no man with me: yes, I trod them in my anger, and trampled them in my wrath; and their lifeblood is sprinkled on my garments, and I have stained all my clothing.

¹³ LORD, the hope of Israel, all who forsake you shall be disappointed. Those who depart from me shall be written in the earth, because they have forsaken the LORD, the spring of living waters.

¹³ You went forth for the salvation of your people, for the salvation of your anointed. You crushed the head of the land of wickedness. You stripped them head to foot. Selah.

⁵ They shall be as mighty men, treading down muddy streets in the battle; and they shall fight, because the LORD is with them; and the riders on horses will be confounded.

³ You shall tread down the wicked; for they will be ashes under the soles of your feet in the day that I make," says the LORD of hosts.

¹⁴ Absalom and all the men of Israel said, "The counsel of Hushai the Archite is better than the counsel of Ahithophel." For the LORD had ordained to defeat the good counsel of Ahithophel, to the intent that the LORD might bring evil on Absalom.

⁵ "Because of the oppression of the weak and because of the groaning of the needy, I will now arise," says the LORD; "I will place in safety the one who longs for it."

¹ [By David.] Contend, LORD, with those who contend with me. Fight against those who fight against me.

²³ Wake up. Rise up to defend me, my God. My Lord, contend for me.

²³ Wake up. Why do you sleep, Lord? Arise. Do not reject us forever.

²⁶ Rise up to help us. Redeem us for your loving kindness' sake.

⁵ You, LORD God of hosts, the God of Israel, rouse yourself to punish the nations. Show no mercy to the wicked traitors. Selah.

¹ [For the Chief Musician. A Psalm by David. A song.] Let God arise. Let his enemies be scattered, and let them who hate him flee before him. ² As smoke is driven away, so drive them away. As wax melts before the fire, so let the wicked perish at the presence of God.

²⁰ As a dream when one wakes up, so, Lord, when you awake, you will despise their fantasies.

³ Lift up your feet to the perpetual ruins, all the evil that the enemy has done in the sanctuary.

⁸ You pronounced judgment from heaven. The earth feared, and was silent, ⁹ when God arose to judgment, to save all the afflicted ones of the earth. Selah.

⁶⁵ Then the Lord awakened as one out of sleep, like a mighty man who shouts by reason of wine.

¹ LORD, you God to whom vengeance belongs, you God to whom vengeance belongs, shine forth. ² Rise up, you judge of the earth. Pay back the proud what they deserve.

⁶ The LORD executes righteous acts, and justice for all who are oppressed.

⁷ Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you will revive me. You will stretch forth your hand against the wrath of my enemies. Your right hand will save me.

¹³ The LORD stands up to contend, and stands to judge his people.

¹⁰ "Now I will arise," says the LORD; "Now I will lift myself up. Now I will be exalted.

²⁰ Now therefore, LORD our God, save us from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you are the LORD, even you only."

⁹ Awake, awake, put on strength, arm of the LORD; awake, as in the days of old, the generations of ancient times. Isn't it you who cut Rahab in pieces, who pierced the monster?

¹¹ Let Mount Zion be glad. Let the daughters of Judah rejoice, Because of your judgments.

¹⁰ The righteous shall rejoice when he sees the vengeance. He shall wash his feet in the blood of the wicked; ¹¹ so that men shall say, "Most certainly there is a reward for the righteous. Most certainly there is a God who judges the earth."

⁴ More majestic than the sounds of many waters, more majestic than the breakers of the sea, the LORD on high is majestic.

⁵ Who is like the LORD, our God, who has his seat on high, ⁶ Who stoops down to see in heaven and in the earth?

⁶ For though the LORD is high, yet he looks after the lowly; but the proud, he knows from afar.

¹⁵ For thus says the high and lofty One who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: "I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also who is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite.

¹⁷ saying: "We give you thanks, Lord God of hosts, the one who is and who was; because you have taken your great power, and reigned. ¹⁸ The nations were angry, and your wrath came, as did the time for the dead to be judged, and to give your servants the prophets, their reward, as well as to the saints, and those who fear your name, to the small and the great; and to destroy those who destroy the earth."

⁵ I heard the angel of the waters saying, "You are righteous, who is and who was, the Holy One, because you have judged these things. ⁶ For they poured out the blood of the saints and the prophets, and you have given them blood to drink. They deserve this." ⁷ I heard the altar saying, "Yes, Lord God of hosts, true and righteous are your judgments."

²⁰ "Rejoice over her, O heaven, you saints, apostles, and prophets; for God has judged your judgment on her."

² for true and righteous are his judgments. For he has judged the great prostitute, who corrupted the earth with her sexual immorality, and he has avenged the blood of his servants at her hand."

²⁵ Be it far from you to do things like that, to kill the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous should be like the wicked. May that be far from you. Shouldn't the Judge of all the earth do right?"

⁵³ The God of Abraham, and the God of Nahor, judge between us." Then Jacob swore by the fear of his father Isaac.

¹² Our God, will you not judge them? For we have no might against this great company that comes against us; neither know we what to do, but our eyes are on you."

⁸ And he will judge the world in righteousness. He will judge the peoples with equity.

⁴ The LORD is in his holy temple. The LORD is on his throne in heaven. His eyes look upon the poor. His eyes examine the descendants of Adam.

² Let my sentence come forth from your presence. Let your eyes look on equity. ³ You have proved my heart. You have visited me in the night. You have tried me, and found nothing. I have resolved that my mouth shall not disobey.

²⁰ The LORD has rewarded me according to my righteousness. According to the cleanness of my hands has he recompensed me. ²¹ For I have kept the ways of the LORD, and have not wickedly departed from my God. ²² For all his ordinances were before me. I did not put away his statutes from me. ²³ I was also blameless with him. I kept myself from my iniquity. ²⁴ Therefore the LORD has rewarded me according to my righteousness, according to the cleanness of my hands in his eyesight.

²¹ Let integrity and uprightness preserve me, for I wait for you, LORD.

¹¹ But as for me, I will walk in my integrity. Redeem me, and be merciful to me.

²⁴ Vindicate me, LORD my God, according to your righteousness. Do not let them gloat over me. ²⁵ Do not let them say in their heart, "Aha. Aha. Our desire." Do not let them say, "We have swallowed him up." ²⁶ Let them be put to shame and confounded together who rejoice at my calamity. Let them be clothed with shame and dishonor who magnify themselves against me. ²⁷ Let them shout for joy and be glad, who favor my righteous cause. And let them say continually, "The LORD be magnified, who delights in the peace of his servant."

¹² As for me, you uphold me in my integrity, and set me in your presence forever.

¹ Vindicate me, God, and plead my cause against a faithless nation. Oh, deliver me from the deceitful and unjust man.

⁷² So he was their shepherd according to the integrity of his heart, and guided them by the skillfulness of his hands.

¹³ before the LORD; for he comes, for he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world with righteousness, the peoples with his truth.

¹ Better is the poor who walks in his integrity than he who is perverse in his lips and is a fool.

³¹ because he has appointed a day in which he will judge the world in righteousness by the man whom he has ordained; of which he has given assurance to everyone by raising him from the dead."

¹⁰ But you, why do you judge your brother? Or you again, why do you despise your brother? For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God. ¹¹ For it is written, "'As I live,' says the Lord, 'to me every knee will bow. Every tongue will confess to God.'" ¹² So then each one of us will give account of himself to God.

⁴ For I know nothing against myself. Yet I am not justified by this, but he who judges me is the Lord. ⁵ Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord comes, who will both bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and reveal the counsels of the hearts. Then each one will get his praise from God.

¹² For our boasting is this: the testimony of our conscience, that with pure motives and sincerity of God, not in fleshly wisdom but in the grace of God we conducted ourselves in the world, and more abundantly toward you.

¹⁰ You are witnesses with God, how holy, righteously, and blamelessly we behaved ourselves toward you who believe.

⁹ He will guard the feet of his faithful ones, but the wicked will be put to silence in darkness. For no man will prevail by strength.

⁷ But the LORD said to Samuel, "Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For humans do not see as God sees, for humans look at the outward appearance, but God looks at the heart."

⁹ You, Solomon my son, know the God of your father, and serve him with a perfect heart and with a willing mind; for the LORD searches all hearts, and understands all the imaginations of the thoughts. If you seek him, he will be found by you; but if you forsake him, he will cast you off forever.

⁵ You have rebuked the nations. You have destroyed the wicked. You have blotted out their name forever and ever. ⁶ The enemy is overtaken by endless ruin; and the very memory of the cities which you have overthrown has perished.

¹⁵ Break the arm of the wicked. As for the evil man, seek out his wickedness until you find none.

¹⁸ to judge the fatherless and the oppressed, that man who is of the earth may terrify no more.

⁵ The LORD examines the righteous, but the wicked and the one who loves violence his soul hates.

³ You have proved my heart. You have visited me in the night. You have tried me, and found nothing. I have resolved that my mouth shall not disobey.

² Examine me, LORD, and prove me. Try my heart and my mind.

²³ The steps of a man are established by the LORD, and he delights in his way.

² He also brought me up out of a pit of tumult, out of the miry clay; and he set my feet on a rock, making my steps secure.

²¹ won't God search this out? For he knows the secrets of the heart.

⁶ Break their teeth, God, in their mouth. Break out the great teeth of the young lions, LORD.

¹⁰ How long, God, shall the enemy mock? Shall the enemy blaspheme your name forever? ¹¹ Why do you draw back your hand, even your right hand? Take it out of your pocket and consume them.

²² Arise, God. Plead your own cause. Remember how the foolish man mocks you all day. ²³ Do not forget the voice of your adversaries. The tumult of those who rise up against you ascends continually.

³⁶ The angel of the LORD went out and struck one hundred and eighty-five thousand men in the camp of the Assyrians. When men arose early in the morning, look, these were all dead bodies. ³⁷ So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed, went away, returned to Nineveh, and stayed there. ³⁸ It happened, as he was worshipping in the house of Nisroch his god, that Adrammelech and Sharezer his sons struck him with the sword; and they escaped into the land of Ararat. Esarhaddon his son reigned in his place.

²⁰ "But, the LORD of hosts, who judges righteously, who tests the heart and the mind, I shall see your vengeance on them; for to you have I revealed my cause."

¹⁰ I, the LORD, search the mind, I try the heart, even to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his doings.

⁶ If you were pure and upright, surely now he would awaken for you, and make the habitation of your righteousness prosperous.

³ But you, LORD, are a shield around me, my glory, and the one who lifts up my head.

¹¹ For the LORD God is a sun and a shield. The LORD will give grace and glory. He withholds no good thing from those who walk blamelessly.

¹⁵ For judgment will return to righteousness. All the upright in heart shall follow it.

¹² I know that the LORD will maintain the cause of the afflicted, and justice for the needy. ¹³ Surely the righteous will give thanks to your name. The upright will dwell in your presence.

² The LORD is a jealous God and avenges. The LORD avenges and is full of wrath. The LORD takes vengeance on his adversaries, and he maintains wrath against his enemies.

⁶ Who can stand before his indignation? Who can endure the fierceness of his anger? His wrath is poured out like fire, and the rocks are broken apart by him.

⁴¹ if I sharpen my flashing sword and my hand takes hold on judgment; I will render vengeance to my adversaries, and will recompense those who hate me.

⁴ Restore us, God of our salvation, and cause your indignation toward us to cease.

¹ In that day, the LORD with his fierce and great and mighty sword will punish leviathan, the fleeing serpent, and leviathan the twisted serpent; and he will kill the serpent that is in the sea.

⁵ For my sword has drunk its fill in the sky. Look, it will come down on Edom, and on the people of my curse, for judgment.

⁶ Seek the LORD while he may be found; call you on him while he is near: ⁷ let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; and let him return to the LORD, and he will have mercy on him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.

¹⁸ I have surely heard Ephraim bemoaning himself thus, 'You have chastised me, and I was chastised, as an untrained calf: turn me, and I shall be turned; for you are the LORD my God. ¹⁹ Surely after that I was turned, I repented; and after that I was instructed, I struck on my thigh: I was ashamed, yes, even confounded, because I bore the reproach of my youth.'

³⁰ "'Therefore I will judge you, house of Israel, everyone according to his ways,' says the Lord GOD. 'Return, and turn yourselves from all your transgressions; so iniquity shall not be your ruin.

⁹ "Son of man, prophesy, and say, 'Thus says the LORD: Say, "A sword, a sword, it is sharpened, and also furbished; ¹⁰ it is sharpened that it may make a slaughter; it is furbished that it may be as lightning: shall we then make mirth? The rod of my son, it condemns every tree. ¹¹ It is given to be furbished, that it may be handled: the sword, it is sharpened, yes, it is furbished, to give it into the hand of the killer."'

²³ It shall be to them as a false divination in their sight, who have sworn oaths to them; but he brings iniquity to memory, that they may be taken.

¹¹ Tell them, 'As I live,' says the Lord GOD, 'I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn, turn from your evil ways; for why will you die, house of Israel?'

¹⁰ "Even now the axe lies at the root of the trees. Therefore, every tree that does not bring forth good fruit is cut down, and cast into the fire.

¹⁹ "Repent therefore, and turn again, that your sins may be blotted out, so that there may come times of refreshing from the presence of the Lord,

²³ "I will heap evils on them. I will spend my arrows on them.

⁴² I will make my arrows drunk with blood. My sword shall devour flesh with the blood of the slain and the captives, from the head of the leaders of the enemy.'"

⁴ For the arrows of Shaddai are within me. My spirit drinks up their poison. The terrors of God set themselves in array against me.

² For, look, the wicked bend their bows. They set their arrows on the strings, that they may shoot in darkness at the upright in heart.

¹⁴ And he sent out arrows and scattered them, and he shot lightning bolts and routed them.

⁵ Your arrows are sharp. The nations fall under you, with arrows in the heart of the king's enemies.

³ who sharpen their tongue like a sword, and aim their arrows, deadly words,

⁷ But God will shoot at them. They will be suddenly struck down with an arrow.

⁶ Throw out lightning, and scatter them. Send out your arrows, and rout them.

¹² He has bent his bow, and set me as a mark for the arrow. ¹³ He has caused the arrows of his quiver to pierce my inward parts.

¹¹ The sun and moon stood still in the sky, at the light of your arrows as they went, at the shining of your glittering spear.

⁶ Since it is a righteous thing with God to repay affliction to those who afflict you,

¹⁰ They called out with a loud voice, saying, "How long, Master, the holy and true, until you judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth?"

⁶ For they poured out the blood of the saints and the prophets, and you have given them blood to drink. They deserve this."

²⁰ the wicked man writhes in pain all his days, even the number of years that are laid up for the oppressor.

³⁵ They conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity. Their heart prepares deceit."

¹¹ You will conceive chaff. You will bring forth stubble. Your breath is a fire that will devour you.

⁴ None sues in righteousness, and none pleads in truth: they trust in vanity, and speak lies; they conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity. ⁵ They hatch adders' eggs, and weave the spider's web: he who eats of their eggs dies; and that which is crushed breaks out into a viper.

¹⁵ Then the lust, when it has conceived, bears sin; and the sin, when it is full grown, brings forth death.

¹⁰ So they hanged Haman on the gallows that he had prepared for Mordecai. Then was the king's wrath pacified.

⁸ According to what I have seen, those who plow iniquity, and sow trouble, reap the same.

²⁷ Yes, you would even cast lots for the fatherless, and make merchandise of your friend.

¹⁵ The nations have fallen into the pit they had made. In the net which they hid, their feet are caught. ¹⁶ The LORD has made himself known. He has executed judgment. The wicked is snared by the work of his own hands. Higgaion. Selah.

² In arrogance, the wicked hunt down the weak. They are caught in the schemes that they devise.

⁷ For without cause they have hidden their net in a pit for me. Without cause they have dug a pit for my soul. ⁸ Let destruction come on him unawares. Let his net that he has hidden catch himself. Let him fall into that destruction.

⁶ They have prepared a net for my steps. My soul is bowed down. They dig a pit before me. They fall into its midst themselves. Selah.

¹³ that you may give him rest from the days of adversity, until the pit is dug for the wicked.

⁸⁵ The proud have dug pits for me, contrary to your Law.

⁹ As for the head of those who surround me, let the mischief of their own lips cover them. ¹⁰ Let burning coals fall on them. Let them be thrown into the fire, into miry pits, from where they never rise.

¹⁰ Let the wicked fall together into their own nets, while I pass by.

²² The evil deeds of the wicked ensnare him. The cords of his sin hold him firmly.

²⁷ Whoever digs a pit shall fall into it. Whoever rolls a stone, it will come back on him.

⁸ He who digs a pit may fall into it; and whoever breaks through a wall may be bitten by a serpent. ⁹ Whoever carves out stones may be injured by them. Whoever splits wood may be endangered thereby.

²⁰ Shall evil be recompensed for good? For they have dug a pit for my soul. Remember how I stood before you to speak good for them, to turn away your wrath from them.

⁹ David knew that Saul was devising mischief against him; and he said to Abiathar the priest, "Bring the ephod here."

¹² May the LORD judge between me and you, and may the LORD avenge me of you; but my hand shall not be on you. ¹³ As the proverb of the ancients says, 'Out of the wicked comes forth wickedness;' but my hand shall not be on you.

¹⁰ David said, "As the LORD lives, the LORD will strike him; or his day shall come to die; or he shall go down into battle and perish.

¹⁹ Moreover the LORD will deliver Israel also with you into the hand of the Philistines; and tomorrow you and your sons with you will fall. The LORD will deliver the army of Israel also into the hand of the Philistines."

³ The battle was fierce against Saul, and the archers found him, and he was wounded by the archers. ⁴ Then Saul said to his armor bearer, "Draw your sword, and thrust me through with it, lest these uncircumcised come and thrust me through, and torture me." But his armor bearer would not; for he was terrified. Therefore Saul took his sword, and fell on it.

³² The LORD will return his blood on his own head, because he fell on two men more righteous and better than he, and killed them with the sword, and my father David did not know it: Abner the son of Ner, commander of the army of Israel, and Amasa the son of Jether, captain of the army of Judah.

²⁵ but when this became known to the king, he commanded by letters that his wicked device, which he had devised against the Jews, should return on his own head, and that he and his sons should be hanged on the gallows.

⁴ He plots iniquity on his bed. He sets himself in a way that is not good. He doesn't abhor evil.

¹² There evildoers are fallen. They are thrust down, and shall not be able to rise.

¹² The wicked plots against the just, and gnashes at him with his teeth. ¹³ The Lord will laugh at him, for he sees that his day is coming.

³ Look, I will rebuke your seed, and will spread dung on your faces, even the dung of your feasts; and you will be taken away with it. ⁴ You will know that I have sent this commandment to you, that my covenant may be with Levi," says the LORD of hosts. ⁵ "My covenant was with him of life and peace; and I gave them to him that he might be reverent toward me; and he was reverent toward me, and stood in awe of my name.

² I will be glad and rejoice in you. I will sing praise to your name, O Most High.

²⁸ My tongue shall talk about your righteousness and about your praise all day long.

¹⁴ Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation. My tongue shall sing aloud of your righteousness.

¹⁵ My mouth will tell about your righteousness, and of your salvation all day, though I do not know its full measure. ¹⁶ I will come with the mighty acts of the Lord GOD. I will make mention of your righteousness, even of yours alone.

⁸ But you, LORD, are on high forevermore.

² The LORD has made known his salvation. He has openly shown his righteousness in the sight of the nations.

³ His work is honor and majesty. His righteousness endures forever.

⁷ They will utter the memory of your great goodness, and will sing of your righteousness.

¹⁷ The sentence is by the decree of the watchers, and the decision is a command of the holy ones; so that the living may know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to anyone he wants, and sets up over it the lowliest of men.

²⁵ that you shall be driven from men, and your dwelling shall be with the animals of the field, and you shall be made to eat grass as oxen, and shall be wet with the dew of the sky, and seven times shall pass over you; until you know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whomever he will.

³⁴ "At the end of the days I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted up my eyes to heaven, and my understanding returned to me, and I blessed the Most High, and I praised and honored him who lives forever. For his dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom from generation to generation.

⁴⁸ However, the Most High does not dwell in temples made with hands, as the prophet says,
