²⁰ God came to Balaam at night, and said to him, "If the men have come to call you, rise up, go with them; but only the word which I speak to you, that you shall do."

³⁵ The angel of God said to Balaam, "Go with the men; but only the word that I shall speak to you, that you shall speak." So Balaam went with the princes of Balak.

⁵ And God put a word in Balaam's mouth, and said, "Return to Balak, and thus you shall speak."

¹² He answered and said, "Must I not be careful to speak that which God puts in my mouth?"

¹⁶ And God met Balaam and put a word in his mouth, and said, "Return to Balak, and say this."

²⁶ But Balaam answered Balak, "Did I not tell you, saying, 'All that God speaks, that I must do?'"

¹³ 'If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I can't go beyond the word of the LORD, to do either good or bad in my heart. I will say what God says'?

⁵ and they said to him, "Look, you are old, and your sons do not walk in your ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations." ⁶ But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, "Give us a king to judge us." Samuel prayed to the LORD. ⁷ The LORD said to Samuel, "Listen to the voice of the people in all that they tell you; for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected me, that I should not be king over them. ⁸ According to all the works which they have done to me since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt even to this day, in that they have forsaken me, and served other gods, so do they also to you. ⁹ Now therefore listen to their voice: however you shall protest solemnly to them, and shall show them the way of the king who shall reign over them."

¹² "When you saw that Nahash the king of the people of Ammon came against you, you said to me, 'No, but a king shall reign over us;' when the LORD your God was your king. ¹³ Now therefore see the king whom you have chosen, and whom you have asked for: and look, the LORD has set a king over you. ¹⁴ If you will fear the LORD, and serve him, and listen to his voice, and not rebel against the commandment of the LORD, and both you and also the king who reigns over you are followers of the LORD your God, then he will rescue you. ¹⁵ But if you will not listen to the voice of the LORD, but rebel against the commandment of the LORD, then the hand of the LORD will be against you, and against your king to destroy you. ¹⁶ "Now therefore stand still and see this great thing, which the LORD will do before your eyes. ¹⁷ Isn't it wheat harvest today? I will call to the LORD, that he may send thunder and rain; and you shall know and see that your wickedness is great, which you have done in the sight of the LORD, in asking for a king." ¹⁸ So Samuel called to the LORD; and the LORD sent thunder and rain that day: and all the people greatly feared the LORD and Samuel. ¹⁹ All the people said to Samuel, "Pray for your servants to the LORD your God, that we not die; for we have added to all our sins this evil, to ask us a king."

¹⁰ The LORD nullifies the counsel of the nations. He makes the thoughts of the peoples to be of no effect. ¹¹ The counsel of the LORD stands fast forever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations.

³⁰ They did not turn from their cravings. Their food was yet in their mouths, ³¹ when the anger of God went up against them, killed some of the fattest of them, and struck down the young men of Israel.

¹² So I let them go after the stubbornness of their hearts, that they might walk in their own counsels.

²⁹ Because of your raging against me, and because your arrogance has come up into my ears, therefore I will put my hook in your nose and my bridle in your lips, and I will turn you back by the way by which you came.

² The word of the LORD came to me, saying, ³ "Son of man, these men have taken their idols into their heart, and put the stumbling block of their iniquity before their face: should I be inquired of at all by them? ⁴ Therefore speak to them, and tell them, 'Thus says the Lord GOD: "Every man of the house of Israel who takes his idols into his heart, and puts the stumbling block of his iniquity before his face, and comes to the prophet; I the LORD will answer him in it according to the multitude of his idols; ⁵ that I may take the house of Israel in their own heart, because they are all estranged from me through their idols."'

¹¹ I have given you a king in my anger, and have taken him away in my wrath.

⁹ even he whose coming is according to the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, ¹⁰ and with all deception of wickedness for those who are perishing, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved. ¹¹ And because of this, God sends them a strong delusion, that they should believe the lie, ¹² in order that all might be judged who did not believe the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.
