³² Leah conceived, and bore a son, and she named him Reuben. For she said, "Because God has looked at my affliction, and given me a son. For now my husband will love me." ³³ She conceived again, and bore a son, and said, "Because God has heard that I am unloved, he has therefore given me this son also." So she named him Simeon. ³⁴ She conceived again, and bore a son. She said, "Now this time my husband will become attached to me, since I have given him three sons." Therefore he was named Levi. ³⁵ She conceived again, and bore a son. She said, "This time will I praise the LORD." Therefore she named him Judah. Then she stopped bearing.

⁵ Bilhah conceived, and bore Jacob a son. ⁶ Rachel said, "God has judged me, and has also heard my voice, and has given me a son." Therefore she called his name Dan. ⁷ Bilhah, Rachel's handmaid, conceived again, and bore Jacob a second son. ⁸ Rachel said, "I have wrestled mightily with my sister, and have prevailed." So she named him Naphtali. ⁹ When Leah saw that she had stopped bearing, she took Zilpah, her servant, and gave her to Jacob as a wife. ¹⁰ Zilpah, Leah's handmaid, bore Jacob a son. ¹¹ Leah said, "How fortunate." So she named him Gad. ¹² Zilpah, Leah's servant, bore Jacob a second son. ¹³ Leah said, "Happy am I, for the daughters will call me happy." So she named him Asher. ¹⁴ Reuben went out during the wheat harvest and found mandrakes in the field, and brought them to his mother, Leah. Then Rachel said to Leah, "Please give me some of your sonʼs mandrakes." ¹⁵ She said to her, "Is it a small matter that you have taken away my husband? Would you take away my sonʼs mandrakes, also?" Rachel said, "Therefore he may sleep with you tonight for your sonʼs mandrakes." ¹⁶ Jacob came from the field in the evening, and Leah went out to meet him, and said, "You must sleep with me; for I have surely hired you with my sonʼs mandrakes." So he slept with her that night. ¹⁷ God listened to Leah, and she conceived, and bore Jacob a fifth son. ¹⁸ Leah said, "God has given me my wages, because I gave my servant to my husband." So she named him Issachar. ¹⁹ Leah conceived again, and bore a sixth son to Jacob. ²⁰ Leah said, "God has given me with a good gift. Now my husband will live with me, because I have borne him six sons." So she named him Zebulun.

¹⁷ When she was in the difficult labor, the midwife said to her, "Do not be afraid, for now you have another son." ¹⁸ It happened, as her life was departing (for she died), that she named him Ben-Oni, but his father named him Benjamin. ¹⁹ So Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem). ²⁰ Jacob set up a standing-stone on her grave. It is the standing-stone of Rachelʼs grave to this day. ²¹ And Israel traveled and pitched his tent beyond Migdal Eder. ²² It happened, while Israel lived in that land, that Reuben went and slept with Bilhah, his fatherʼs secondary wife, and Israel heard about it. Now the sons of Jacob were twelve. ²³ The sons of Leah: Reuben, Jacobʼs firstborn, and Simeon, and Levi, and Judah, and Issachar, and Zebulun. ²⁴ The sons of Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin. ²⁵ And the sons of Bilhah, Rachelʼs servant: Dan and Naphtali. ²⁶ And the sons of Zilpah, Leahʼs servant: Gad and Asher. These are the sons of Jacob who were born to him in Paddan Aram.

⁸ Now these are the names of the sons of Israel who went to Egypt, Jacob and his sons: Reuben, Jacobʼs firstborn. ⁹ And the sons of Reuben: Hanoch, and Pallu, and Hezron, and Carmi. ¹⁰ And the sons of Simeon: Jemuel, and Jamin, and Ohad, and Jakin, and Zohar, and Shaul, the son of a Canaanite woman. ¹¹ And the sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. ¹² And the sons of Judah: Er, and Onan, and Shelah, and Perez, and Zerah; but Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan. And the sons of Beriah: Heber, and Malkiel. ¹⁸ These are the sons of Zilpah, whom Laban gave to his daughter Leah, and these she bore to Jacob, sixteen persons. ¹⁹ The sons of Rachel, Jacobʼs wife: Joseph and Benjamin. ²⁰ To Joseph in the land of Egypt were born Manasseh and Ephraim, whom Asenath the daughter of Potiphera, priest of On, bore to him. ²¹ And the sons of Benjamin: Bela, and Beker, and Ashbel, Gera, and Naaman, and Ahiram, and Shuppim, and Huppim, and Ard. ²² These are the sons of Rachel who were born to Jacob: all the persons were fourteen. ²³ And the sons of Dan: Shuham. ²⁴ And the sons of Naphtali: Jahzeel, and Guni, and Jezer, and Shillem.

¹ Then Jacob summoned his sons, and said: "Gather yourselves together so that I may tell you what will happen to you in the days to come. ² Assemble yourselves and hear, you sons of Jacob. Listen to Israel, your father. ³ Reuben, you are my firstborn, my strength, and the the firstfruits of my virility, preeminent in dignity and preeminent in power. ⁴ Uncontrolled as the waters, you will not have excel, because you went up to your father's bed, you went up and defiled my couch. ⁵ Simeon and Levi are brothers. Their swords are weapons of violence. ⁶ May I never enter their council. May my honor never be joined with their assembly. For in their anger they killed men, and for pleasure they hamstrung oxen. ⁷ Cursed be their anger, for it has been fierce, and their fury, for it was cruel. I will divide them in Jacob,and scatter them in Israel. ⁸ Judah, your brothers will praise you. Your hand will be on the neck of your enemies. Your fatherʼs sons will bow down before you. ⁹ Judah is a lionʼs cub. From the prey, my son, you rise up. Like a lion he crouches and lies down, as a lioness. Who will rouse him up? ¹⁰ The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the rulerʼs staff from between his feet, until he comes to whom it belongs. And it is he whom the peoples will obey. ¹¹ Binding his foal to the vine, and his donkeyʼs colt to the choice vine. He will wash his garments in wine, and his robes in the blood of grapes. ¹² His eyes will be darker than wine, and his teeth whiter than milk. ¹³ Zebulun will dwell at the seashore, and he will be a harbor for ships, and his border will be at Sidon. ¹⁴ Issachar is a strong donkey lying down between the saddlebags. ¹⁵ When he sees a good resting place, that the land is pleasant, he will bend his back to the burden, and become a slave doing forced labor. ¹⁶ Dan will judge his people as one of the tribes of Israel. ¹⁷ Dan will be a serpent on the road, a viper by the path, that bites the horseʼs heels so that his rider falls backward. ¹⁸ I wait for your salvation, God. ¹⁹ Gad will be attacked by raiders, but he will raid at their heels. ²⁰ Asherʼs food will be rich, and he will provide royal delicacies. ²¹ Naphtali is a doe set free that bears beautiful fawns. ²² Joseph is a fruitful son, a fruitful son by a spring. His branches run over a wall. ²³ The archers will attack him with bitterness, and shoot at him, and harass him. ²⁴ Yet his bow will remain steady, and his arms will be made agile by the hands of the Mighty One of Jacob, by the name of the Shepherd, the Rock of Israel, ²⁵ by the God of your father, who will help you, and El Shaddai, who will bless you with blessings of the sky above, blessings of the deep that lies below, and blessings of the breasts and of the womb. ²⁶ The blessings of your father are greater than the blessings of the ancient mountains, and the bounty of the everlasting hills. They will be on the head of Joseph, and on the brow of the prince among his brothers. ²⁷ Benjamin is a ravenous wolf. In the morning he will devour the prey, and at evening he will divide the plunder." ²⁸ All these are the twelve tribes of Israel, and this is what their father said to them when he blessed them. He blessed each one with his own individual blessing. ²⁹ Then he instructed them, and said to them, "I am to be gathered to my people. Bury me with my fathers in the cave that is in the field of Ephron the Hethite, ³⁰ in the cave that is in the field of Machpelah, which is near Mamre in the land of Canaan, which Abraham bought along with the field from Ephron the Hethite as a burial place. ³¹ There they buried Abraham and his wife Sarah. There they buried Isaac and his wife Rebekah, and there I buried Leah. ³² The field and the cave that is in it were purchased from the sons of Heth." ³³ When Jacob finished instructing his sons, he drew his legs up into the bed and breathed his last, and was gathered to his people.

² Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah, ³ Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin, ⁴ Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher. ⁵ All the souls who came out of Jacob's body were seventy-five, and Joseph was in Egypt already.

¹⁰ "On the south side shall be the standard of the camp of Reuben according to their divisions. The prince of the people of Reuben shall be Elizur the son of Shedeur.

³⁰ On the fourth day Elizur the son of Shedeur, prince of the people of Reuben

¹⁸ The standard of the camp of Reuben went forward according to their armies. Elizur the son of Shedeur was over his army.

¹ This is the blessing, with which Moses the man of God blessed the children of Israel before his death. ² He said, "The LORD came from Sinai, and dawned from Seir upon us. He shone forth from Mount Paran. He came from the ten thousands of holy ones. At his right hand was a fiery law for them. ³ Yes, he loves the people. All his holy ones are in your hand. They sat down at your feet; each receives your words. ⁴ Moses commanded us a law, an inheritance for the assembly of Jacob. ⁵ He was king in Jeshurun, when the heads of the people were gathered, all the tribes of Israel together. ⁶ "Let Reuben live, and not die; Nor let his men be few." ⁷ This is for Judah. He said, "Hear, LORD, the voice of Judah. Bring him in to his people. With his hands he contended for himself. You shall be a help against his adversaries." ⁸ Of Levi he said, "Give to Levi your Thummim and your Urim to your faithful one, whom you proved at Massah, with whom you strove at the waters of Meribah; ⁹ who said of his father, and of his mother, 'I have not seen him;' Neither did he acknowledge his brothers, Nor did he know his own children: For they have observed your word, and keep your covenant. ¹⁰ They shall teach Jacob your ordinances, and Israel your law. They shall put incense before you, and whole burnt offering on your altar. ¹¹ LORD, bless his substance. Accept the work of his hands. Strike the loins of those who rise against him, of those who hate him, that they not rise again." ¹² Of Benjamin he said, "The beloved of the LORD shall dwell in safety by him. He covers him all the day long. He dwells between his shoulders." ¹³ Of Joseph he said, "His land is blessed by the LORD, for the precious things of the heavens, for the dew, for the deep that couches beneath, ¹⁴ with the choices fruits of the sun, and the bounteous yield of the months, ¹⁵ with the finest produce of the ancient mountains, and the abundance of the everlasting hills, ¹⁶ with the choice things of the earth and its fullness, the good will of him who lived in the bush. Let this come on the head of Joseph, on the crown of the head of him who was separate from his brothers. ¹⁷ A firstborn bull, majesty is his. His horns are the horns of the wild ox. With them he shall push all of the peoples, to the farthest parts of the earth. They are the ten thousands of Ephraim. They are the thousands of Manasseh." ¹⁸ Of Zebulun he said, "Rejoice, Zebulun, in your going out; and Issachar, in your tents. ¹⁹ They shall call the peoples to the mountain. There they will offer sacrifices of righteousness, for they shall draw out the abundance of the seas, the hidden treasures of the sand." ²⁰ Of Gad he said, "He who enlarges Gad is blessed. He dwells as a lioness, and tears the arm, yes, the crown of the head. ²¹ He provided the first part for himself, for there was the lawgiver's portion reserved. He came with the heads of the people. He executed the righteousness of the LORD, his ordinances with Israel." ²² Of Dan he said, "Dan is a lion's cub that leaps out of Bashan." ²³ Of Naphtali he said, "Naphtali, satisfied with favor, full of the blessing of the LORD, Possess the west and the south." ²⁴ Of Asher he said, "Asher is blessed with children. Let him be acceptable to his brothers. Let him dip his foot in oil. ²⁵ Your bars shall be iron and bronze. As your days, so your strength will be. ²⁶ "There is none like God, Jeshurun, who rides on the heavens for your help, In his majesty through the skies. ²⁷ The God of old is a dwelling place. Underneath are the everlasting arms. He thrust out the enemy from before you, and said, 'Destroy.' ²⁸ Israel dwells in safety; the fountain of Jacob alone, In a land of grain and new wine. Yes, his heavens drop down dew. ²⁹ You are happy, Israel. Who is like you, a people saved by the LORD, the shield of your help, the sword of your excellency. Your enemies shall submit themselves to you. You shall tread on their high places."

⁴ I heard the number of those who were sealed, one hundred forty-four thousand, sealed out of every tribe of the children of Israel: ⁵ of the tribe of Judah were sealed twelve thousand, of the tribe of Reuben twelve thousand, of the tribe of Gad twelve thousand, ⁶ of the tribe of Asher twelve thousand, of the tribe of Naphtali twelve thousand, of the tribe of Manasseh twelve thousand, ⁷ of the tribe of Simeon twelve thousand, of the tribe of Levi twelve thousand, of the tribe of Issachar twelve thousand, ⁸ of the tribe of Zebulun twelve thousand, of the tribe of Joseph twelve thousand, of the tribe of Benjamin were sealed twelve thousand.
