¹ All the congregation lifted up their voice, and cried; and the people wept that night. ² All the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron: and the whole congregation said to them, "Would that we had died in the land of Egypt, or would that we had died in this wilderness. ³ Why does the LORD bring us to this land, to fall by the sword? Our wives and our little ones will be a prey: wouldn't it be better for us to return into Egypt?" ⁴ And they said to one another, "Let us make a captain, and let us return into Egypt." ⁵ Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the children of Israel. ⁶ Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who were of those who spied out the land, tore their clothes: ⁷ and they spoke to all the congregation of the children of Israel, saying, "The land, which we passed through to spy it out, is an exceeding good land. ⁸ If the LORD delights in us, then he will bring us into this land, and give it to us; a land which flows with milk and honey. ⁹ Only do not rebel against the LORD, neither fear the people of the land; for they are bread for us: their defense is removed from over them, and the LORD is with us. Do not fear them." ¹⁰ But all the congregation threatened to stone them with stones. Then the glory of the LORD appeared at the Tent of Meeting to all the children of Israel. ¹¹ The LORD said to Moses, "How long will this people despise me? And how long will they not believe in me, for all the signs which I have worked among them? ¹² I will strike them with the pestilence, and disinherit them, and I will make of you and your father's house a nation greater and mightier than they." ¹³ Moses said to the LORD, "Then the Egyptians will hear it; for you brought up this people in your might from among them; ¹⁴ and they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land. They have heard that you LORD are in the midst of this people; for you LORD are seen face to face, and your cloud stands over them, and you go before them, in a pillar of cloud by day, and in a pillar of fire by night. ¹⁵ Now if you killed this people as one man, then the nations which have heard the fame of you will speak, saying, ¹⁶ 'Because the LORD was not able to bring this people into the land which he swore to them, therefore he has slain them in the wilderness.' ¹⁷ Now please let the power of the Lord be great, according as you have spoken, saying, ¹⁸ 'The LORD is slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness, forgiving iniquity and disobedience; and that will by no means clear [the guilty], visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, and upon the children's children, on the third and on the fourth [generation].' ¹⁹ Please pardon the iniquity of this people according to the greatness of your loving kindness, and according as you have forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now." ²⁰ The LORD said, "I have pardoned according to your word. ²¹ But truly, as I live, and as all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the LORD; ²² because all those men who have seen my glory, and my signs, which I worked in Egypt and in the wilderness, yet have tempted me these ten times, and have not listened to my voice; ²³ surely they shall not see the land which I swore to their fathers, neither shall any of those who despised me see it: ²⁴ but my servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and has followed me fully, him will I bring into the land into which he went; and his descendants shall possess it. ²⁵ Now the Amalekite and the Canaanite dwell in the valley: tomorrow turn, and go into the wilderness by the way to the Sea at the End." ²⁶ The LORD spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying, ²⁷ "How long shall I bear with this evil congregation, that murmur against me? I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel, which they murmur against me. ²⁸ Tell them, 'As I live, says the LORD, surely as you have spoken in my ears, so will I do to you: ²⁹ your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness; and all who were numbered of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward, who have murmured against me, ³⁰ surely you shall not come into the land, concerning which I swore that I would make you dwell in it, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun. ³¹ But your little ones, that you said should be a prey, them will I bring in, and they shall know the land which you have rejected. ³² But as for you, your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness. ³³ Your children shall be wanderers in the wilderness forty years, and shall bear your prostitution, until your dead bodies be consumed in the wilderness. ³⁴ After the number of the days in which you spied out the land, even forty days, for every day a year, you will bear your iniquities, even forty years, and you will know my alienation.' ³⁵ I, the LORD, have spoken, surely this will I do to all this evil congregation, who are gathered together against me: in this wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die." ³⁶ The men, whom Moses sent to spy out the land, who returned, and made all the congregation to murmur against him, by bringing up an evil report against the land, ³⁷ even those men who brought up an evil report of the land, died by the plague before the LORD. ³⁸ But Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, remained alive of those men who went to spy out the land. ³⁹ Moses told these words to all the children of Israel: and the people mourned greatly. ⁴⁰ They rose up early in the morning, and went up to the top of the mountain, saying, "Look, we are here, and will go up to the place which the LORD has promised: for we have sinned." ⁴¹ Moses said, "Why now do you disobey the commandment of the LORD, since it shall not prosper? ⁴² Do not go up, for the LORD isn't among you; that you not be struck down before your enemies. ⁴³ For there the Amalekite and the Canaanite are before you, and you shall fall by the sword: because you are turned back from following the LORD, therefore the LORD will not be with you." ⁴⁴ But they presumed to go up to the top of the mountain: nevertheless the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and Moses, did not depart out of the camp. ⁴⁵ Then the Amalekite came down, and the Canaanite who lived in that mountain, and struck them and beat them down, even to Hormah.

¹ The people were complaining in the ears of the LORD. When the LORD heard it, his anger was kindled; and the LORD's fire burnt among them, and consumed some of the outskirts of the camp. ² The people cried to Moses; and Moses prayed to the LORD, and the fire abated. ³ The name of that place was called Taberah, because the LORD's fire burnt among them. ⁴ The mixed multitude that was among them lusted exceedingly: and the children of Israel also wept again, and said, "Who will give us flesh to eat?

⁴⁵ You returned and wept before the LORD; but the LORD did not listen to your voice, nor gave ear to you.

²⁴ The people murmured against Moses, saying, "What shall we drink?"

² The whole congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron in the wilderness; ³ and the children of Israel said to them, "We wish that we had died by the hand of the LORD in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the meat pots, when we ate our fill of bread, for you have brought us out into this wilderness, to kill this whole assembly with hunger."

³ The people were thirsty for water there; and the people murmured against Moses, and said, "Why have you brought us up out of Egypt, to kill us, our children, and our livestock with thirst?"

I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel, which they murmur against me. ²⁸ Tell them, 'As I live, says the LORD, surely as you have spoken in my ears, so will I do to you: ²⁹ your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness; and all who were numbered of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward, who have murmured against me,

⁴¹ But on the next day all the congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron, saying, "You have killed the LORD's people."

²⁷ and you murmured in your tents, and said, "Because the LORD hated us, he has brought us forth out of the land of Egypt, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us.

⁴ But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a broom tree. And he requested for himself that he might die, and said, "It is enough. Now, O LORD, take away my life, for I am no better than my fathers."

¹¹ "Why did I not die from the womb? Why did I not give up the spirit when my mother bore me?

¹⁵ so that my soul chooses strangling, death rather than my bones. ¹⁶ I loathe my life. I do not want to live forever. Leave me alone, for my days are but a breath.

²⁴ Yes, they despised the pleasant land. They did not believe his word,

¹⁰ Neither grumble, as some of them also grumbled, and perished by the destroyer.

¹⁴ Do all things without murmurings and disputes, ¹⁵ that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you are seen as lights in the world,

¹⁶ These are murmurers and complainers, walking after their lusts (and their mouth speaks proud things), showing respect of persons to gain advantage.

³¹ But your little ones, that you said should be a prey, them will I bring in, and they shall know the land which you have rejected. ³² But as for you, your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness.

⁴⁰ How often they rebelled against him in the wilderness, and grieved him in the desert.

³ "They bend their tongue as a bow. Falsehood and not truth has grown strong in the land; for they proceed from evil to evil, and they do not know me," says the LORD.

¹⁶ Only he shall not multiply horses to himself, nor cause the people to return to Egypt, to the end that he may multiply horses; because the LORD has said to you, "You shall not go back that way again."

⁶⁸ The LORD will bring you into Egypt again with ships, by the way of which I said to you, You shall see it no more again: and there you shall sell yourselves to your enemies for bondservants and for bondmaids, and no man shall buy you.

¹⁶ "But they and our fathers dealt proudly and hardened their neck, did not listen to your commandments, ¹⁷ and refused to obey, neither were they mindful of your wonders that you did among them, but hardened their neck, and appointed a leader to return to their slavery in Egypt. But you are a God ready to pardon, gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness, and did not forsake them.

³⁹ to whom our fathers would not be obedient, but rejected him, and turned back in their hearts to Egypt,

³⁸ But the righteous will live by faith, and if he holds back, my soul has no pleasure in him." ³⁹ But we are not of those who shrink back to destruction, but of those who have faith to the saving of the soul.

¹⁵ If indeed they had been thinking of that country from which they went out, they would have had enough time to return.

³ Then Abram fell facedown, and God talked with him, saying,

³⁷ Then Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, came with Shebna the scribe, and Joah the son of Asaph the recorder, to Hezekiah with their clothes torn, and told him the words of Rabshakeh.

²⁵ They took of the fruit of the land in their hands, and brought it down to us, and brought us word again, and said, "It is a good land which the LORD our God gives to us."

⁸ I have come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land to a good and large land, to a land flowing with milk and honey; to the place of the Canaanites, and the Hethites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Girgashites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites.

¹⁵ Only the LORD had a delight in your fathers to love them, and he chose their descendants after them, even you above all peoples, as at this day.

²⁵ The king said to Zadok, "Return the ark of God to the city. If I find favor in the eyes of the LORD, he will bring me back and show me both it and his dwelling place; ²⁶ but if he should say, 'I have no delight in you;' look, here I am. Let him do to me as seems good to him."

²⁰ He also brought me out into a large place. He delivered me, because he delighted in me.

⁹ Blessed is the LORD your God, who delighted in you, to set you on the throne of Israel. Because of the LORD's everlasting love for Israel, therefore he made you king, to do justice and righteousness."

⁸ "He trusts in the LORD; let him deliver him. Let him rescue him, since he delights in him."

¹⁰ He doesn't delight in the strength of the horse. He takes no pleasure in the legs of a man. ¹¹ The LORD takes pleasure in those who fear him, in those who hope in his loving kindness.

⁴ And you shall no more be termed Forsaken; neither shall your land any more be termed Desolate: but you shall be called Hephzibah, and your land Beulah; for the LORD delights in you, and your land shall be married.

⁴¹ Yes, I will rejoice over them to do them good, and I will plant them in this land assuredly with my whole heart and with my whole soul.'

¹⁷ The LORD your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save. He will rejoice over you with joy. He will calm you in his love. He will rejoice over you with singing.

³¹ What then are we to say about these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?

²¹ Then Israel said to Joseph, "Look, I am about to die, but God will be with you, and God will bring you back from this land to the land of your fathers.

¹⁶ For how would people know that I have found favor in your sight, I and your people? Isn't it in that you go with us, so that we are separated, I and your people, from all the people who are on the surface of the earth?"

⁸ God brings him out of Egypt. He has as it were the strength of the wild ox. He shall eat up the nations his adversaries, shall break their bones in pieces, and pierce them with his arrows.

²¹ Look, the LORD your God has set the land before you: go up, take possession, as the LORD, the God of your fathers, has spoken to you; do not be afraid, neither be dismayed."

²⁶ Yet you wouldn't go up, but rebelled against the commandment of the LORD your God:

¹⁸ you shall not be afraid of them: you shall well remember what the LORD your God did to Pharaoh, and to all Egypt;

²¹ You shall not be scared of them; for the LORD your God is in the midst of you, a great and awesome God.

⁷ Remember, do not forget, how you provoked the LORD your God to wrath in the wilderness: from the day that you went forth out of the land of Egypt, until you came to this place, you have been rebellious against the LORD.

²³ When the LORD sent you from Kadesh Barnea, saying, "Go up and possess the land which I have given you"; then you rebelled against the commandment of the LORD your God, and you did not believe him, nor listen to his voice. ²⁴ You have been rebellious against the LORD from the day that I knew you.

¹ When you go forth to battle against your enemies, and see horses, chariots, and a people more than you, you shall not be afraid of them; for the LORD your God is with you, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt. ² It shall be, when you draw near to the battle, that the priest shall approach and speak to the people, ³ and shall tell them, "Hear, Israel, you draw near this day to battle against your enemies: do not let your heart faint; do not be afraid, nor tremble, neither be scared of them; ⁴ for the LORD your God is he who goes with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you."

⁶ Be strong and courageous, do not be afraid, nor be scared of them: for the LORD your God is he who is going with you; he will not leave you nor forsake you."

⁸ The LORD, he it is who does go before you; he will be with you, he will not fail you, neither forsake you: do not be afraid, neither be dismayed."

⁴² I will make my arrows drunk with blood. My sword shall devour flesh with the blood of the slain and the captives, from the head of the leaders of the enemy.'"

⁵ No man will be able to stand before you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not fail you nor forsake you.

²² And the house of Joseph also went up against Bethel; and the LORD was with them.

¹² Look, God is with us at our head, and his priests with the trumpets of alarm to sound an alarm against you. Children of Israel, do not fight against the LORD, the God of your fathers; for you shall not prosper."

² and he went out to meet Asa, and said to him, "Hear me, Asa, and all Judah and Benjamin. The LORD is with you, while you are with him; and if you seek him, he will be found by you; but if you forsake him, he will forsake you.

¹⁷ You will not need to fight this battle. Set yourselves, stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD with you, O Judah and Jerusalem. Do not be afraid, nor be dismayed. Go out against them tomorrow, for the LORD is with you.'"

⁸ With him is an arm of flesh; but with us is the LORD our God to help us, and to fight our battles." The people rested themselves on the words of Hezekiah king of Judah.

⁴ Have all evildoers no knowledge, who eat up my people as they eat bread? They do not call on the LORD.

¹⁰ But they rebelled, and grieved his holy Spirit: therefore he was turned to be their enemy, and he himself fought against them.

⁴⁵ 'Those who fled stand without strength under the shadow of Heshbon; for a fire has gone forth out of Heshbon, and a flame from the city of Sihon, and it has destroyed the forehead of Moab, and the crown of the sons of tumult.

⁵ We have sinned, and have done what is wrong and wicked, and have rebelled, even turning aside from your commandments and from your ordinances.

⁹ To the Lord our God belong compassion and forgiveness, for we have rebelled against him.

¹⁰ It happened, as Aaron spoke to the whole congregation of the children of Israel, that they looked toward the wilderness, and look, the glory of the LORD appeared in the cloud.

⁴ Moses cried to the LORD, saying, "What shall I do with these people? They are almost ready to stone me."

¹⁶ The glory of God settled on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it six days. The seventh day he called to Moses out of the midst of the cloud. ¹⁷ The appearance of the glory of the LORD was like devouring fire on the top of the mountain in the eyes of the children of Israel.

³⁴ Then the cloud covered the Tent of Meeting, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle.

²³ Moses and Aaron went into the Tent of Meeting, and came out, and blessed the people: and the glory of the LORD appeared to all the people.

¹⁹ Korah assembled all the congregation against them to the door of the Tent of Meeting: and the glory of the LORD appeared to all the congregation.

⁴² It happened, when the congregation was assembled against Moses and against Aaron, that they looked toward the Tent of Meeting: and look, the cloud covered it, and the glory of the LORD appeared.

⁶ Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly to the door of the Tent of Meeting, and fell on their faces: and the glory of the LORD appeared to them.

⁶ David was greatly distressed; for the people spoke of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters: but David strengthened himself in the LORD his God.

³⁷ "Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets, and stones those who are sent to her. How often I would have gathered your children together, even as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you would not.

⁵² Which of the prophets did not your fathers persecute? They killed those who foretold the coming of the Righteous One, of whom you have now become betrayers and murderers.

⁵⁹ They stoned Stephen as he called out, saying, "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit."

³ Moses and Aaron went in to Pharaoh, and said to him, "This is what the LORD, the God of the Hebrews, says: 'How long will you refuse to humble yourself before me? Let my people go, that they may serve me.

²⁸ The LORD said to Moses, "How long do you refuse to keep my commandments and my laws?

²³ surely they shall not see the land which I swore to their fathers, neither shall any of those who despised me see it:

²⁷ "How long shall I bear with this evil congregation, that murmur against me? I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel, which they murmur against me.

³² Yet in this thing you did not believe the LORD your God,

⁷ Remember, do not forget, how you provoked the LORD your God to wrath in the wilderness: from the day that you went forth out of the land of Egypt, until you came to this place, you have been rebellious against the LORD. ⁸ Also in Horeb you provoked the LORD to wrath, and the LORD was angry with you to destroy you.

²² At Taberah, and at Massah, and at Kibroth Hattaavah, you provoked the LORD to wrath. ²³ When the LORD sent you from Kadesh Barnea, saying, "Go up and possess the land which I have given you"; then you rebelled against the commandment of the LORD your God, and you did not believe him, nor listen to his voice.

²² because they did not believe in God, and did not trust in his salvation.

³² For all this they still sinned, and did not believe in his wondrous works.

⁴¹ They turned again and tempted God, and gave pain to the Holy One of Israel. ⁴² They did not remember his hand, nor the day when he redeemed them from the adversary;

⁸ Do not harden your heart, as at Meribah, as in the day of Massah in the wilderness,

²² "How long, you simple ones, will you love simplicity? How long will mockers delight themselves in mockery, and fools hate knowledge?

¹⁴ Jerusalem, wash your heart from wickedness, that you may be saved. How long shall your evil thoughts lodge within you?

⁵ Let Samaria throw out his calf idol. My anger burns against them. How long will it be until they are capable of purity?

¹⁴ For thus says the LORD of hosts: "As I thought to do evil to you, when your fathers provoked me to wrath," says the LORD of hosts, "and I did not repent;

¹⁷ Jesus answered, "Faithless and perverse generation. How long will I be with you? How long will I bear with you? Bring him here to me."

¹⁹ And answering, he said to them, "You unbelieving generation, how long must I be with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring him to me."

³⁸ But if I do them, though you do not believe me, believe the works; that you may know and understand that the Father is in me, and I in the Father."

³⁷ But though he had done so many signs before them, yet they did not believe in him,

²⁴ If I had not done among them the works which no one else did, they would not have had sin. But now have they seen and also hated both me and my Father.

⁸ do not harden your hearts, as in the provocation, like as in the day of the trial in the wilderness,

¹⁶ For who, when they heard, rebelled? No, did not all those who came out of Egypt by Moses?

¹⁸ To whom did he swear that they would not enter into his rest, but to those who were disobedient?

³ They said, "The God of the Hebrews has met with us. Please let us go three days' journey into the wilderness, and sacrifice to our God, lest he fall on us with pestilence, or with the sword."

¹⁰ Now therefore leave me alone, that my wrath may burn hot against them, and that I may consume them; and I will make of you a great nation."

⁴⁶ Moses said to Aaron, "Take your censer, and put fire from off the altar in it, and lay incense on it, and carry it quickly to the congregation, and make atonement for them; for wrath has gone out from the LORD. The plague has begun." ⁴⁷ Aaron did as Moses said, and ran into the midst of the assembly; and look, the plague has begun among the people: and he put on the incense, and made atonement for the people. ⁴⁸ He stood between the dead and the living; and the plague was stayed. ⁴⁹ Now those who died by the plague were fourteen thousand and seven hundred, besides those who died about the matter of Korah.

⁹ Those who died by the plague were twenty-four thousand.

¹ Again the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he moved David against them, saying, "Go, number Israel and Judah."

¹² "Go and speak to David, 'Thus says the LORD, "I offer you three things. Choose one of them, that I may do it to you."'" ¹³ So Gad came to David, and told him, and said to him, "Shall three years of famine come to you in your land? Or will you flee three months before your foes while they pursue you? Or shall there be three days' pestilence in your land? Now answer, and consider what answer I shall return to him who sent me." ¹⁴ David said to Gad, "I am in distress. Let me fall now into the hand of the LORD; for his mercies are great. Let me not fall into the hand of man." ¹⁵ So the LORD sent a pestilence on Israel from the morning even to the appointed time; and the destruction began among the people. And there died of the people from Dan even to Beersheba seventy thousand men.

¹¹ Moses pleaded with the LORD his God, and said, "O LORD, why does your wrath burn hot against your people, that you have brought forth out of the land of Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand? ¹² Why should the Egyptians speak, saying, 'He brought them forth for evil, to kill them in the mountains, and to consume them from the surface of the earth?' Turn from your fierce wrath, and repent of this evil against your people. ¹³ Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, your servants, to whom you swore by your own self, and said to them, 'I will multiply your descendants as the stars of the sky, and all this land that I have spoken of I will give to your descendants, and they shall inherit it forever.'" ¹⁴ The LORD changed his mind about the disaster which he said he would do to his people.

²⁶ I prayed to God, and said, "Lord GOD, do not destroy your people and your inheritance, that you have redeemed through your greatness, that you have brought out of Egypt with a mighty hand. ²⁷ Remember your servants, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; do not look to the stubbornness of this people, nor to their wickedness, nor to their sin, ²⁸ lest the land you brought us out from say, 'Because the LORD was not able to bring them into the land which he promised to them, and because he hated them, he has brought them out to kill them in the wilderness.'

²⁷ were it not that I feared the provocation of the enemy, lest their adversaries should judge wrongly, lest they should say, 'Our hand is exalted, the LORD has not done all this.'"

⁸ Oh, Lord, what shall I say, after that Israel has turned their backs before their enemies. ⁹ For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land will hear of it, and will surround us, and cut off our name from the earth. What will you do for your great name?"

²³ Therefore he said that he would destroy them, had Moses, his chosen, not stood before him in the breach, to turn away his wrath, so that he wouldn't destroy them.

⁹ But I worked for my name's sake, that it should not be profaned in the sight of the nations, among which they were, in whose sight I made myself known to them, in bringing them forth out of the land of Egypt.

¹⁴ But I worked for my name's sake, that it should not be profaned in the sight of the nations, in whose sight I brought them out.

³⁰ So Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: "For I have seen God face to face, and my life has been preserved."

²¹ God went before them by day in a pillar of cloud, to lead them on their way, and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light, that they might go by day and by night: ²² the pillar of cloud by day, and the pillar of fire by night, did not depart from before the people.

¹⁴ The peoples have heard. They tremble. Pangs have taken hold on the inhabitants of Philistia.

¹¹ The LORD spoke to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. He turned again into the camp, but his servant Joshua, the son of Nun, a young man, did not depart out of the Tent.

³⁸ For the cloud of the LORD was on the tabernacle by day, and there was fire in the cloud by night, in the sight of all the house of Israel, throughout all their journeys.

¹⁵ On the day that the tabernacle was raised up, the cloud covered the tabernacle, even the Tent of the Testimony: and at evening it was over the tabernacle as it were the appearance of fire, until morning. ¹⁶ So it was continually. The cloud covered it by day, and the appearance of fire by night. ¹⁷ Whenever the cloud was taken up from over the Tent, then after that the children of Israel traveled; and in the place where the cloud remained, there the children of Israel camped. ¹⁸ At the commandment of the LORD, the children of Israel traveled, and at the commandment of the LORD they camped. As long as the cloud remained on the tabernacle they remained camped. ¹⁹ When the cloud stayed on the tabernacle many days, then the children of Israel kept the command of God, and did not travel. ²⁰ Sometimes the cloud was a few days on the tabernacle; then according to the commandment of the LORD they remained camped, and according to the commandment of the LORD they traveled. ²¹ Sometimes the cloud was from evening until morning; and when the cloud was taken up in the morning, they traveled: or by day and by night, when the cloud was taken up, they traveled.

³⁴ The cloud of the LORD was over them by day, when they set forward from the camp.

⁸ With him I will speak mouth to mouth, even openly, and not in riddles; and he shall see the LORD's form. Why then were you not afraid to speak against my servant, against Moses?"

⁴ The LORD spoke with you face to face on the mountain out of the midst of the fire,

¹⁰ There has not arisen a prophet since in Israel like Moses, whom the LORD knew face to face,

⁹ and she said to the men, "I know that the LORD has given you the land, and that the fear of you has fallen on us, and that all the inhabitants of the land melt away before you. ¹⁰ For we have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Sea at the End before you, when you came out of Egypt; and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites, who were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon and to Og, whom you utterly destroyed.

¹ And it happened, when all the kings of the Amorites, who were beyond the Jordan westward, and all the kings of the Canaanites, who were by the sea, heard how that the LORD had dried up the waters of the Jordan from before the children of Israel, until they had passed over, that their heart melted, neither was there spirit in them any more, because of the children of Israel.

¹² Moreover, in a pillar of cloud you led them by day; and in a pillar of fire by night, to give them light in the way in which they should go.

¹⁹ yet you in your manifold mercies did not forsake them in the wilderness: the pillar of cloud did not depart from over them by day, to lead them in the way; neither the pillar of fire by night, to show them light, and the way in which they should go.

¹⁴ In the daytime he also led them with a cloud, and all night with a light of fire.

³⁹ He spread a cloud for a covering, fire to give light in the night.

¹⁸ No one has seen God at any time. The only Son, who is at the Father's side, has made him known.

⁹ Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you all this time, and still you do not know me, Philip? He who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father?'

¹² For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I will know fully, even as I was also fully known.

² Beloved, now we are children of God, and it is not yet revealed what we will be. We know that, when he is revealed, we will be like him; for we will see him just as he is.

¹⁶ And the LORD said to him, "Surely I will be with you, and you shall strike the Midianites as one man."

²⁸ lest the land you brought us out from say, 'Because the LORD was not able to bring them into the land which he promised to them, and because he hated them, he has brought them out to kill them in the wilderness.'

²⁶ I said, I want to cut them to pieces. I will remove the memory of them from men; ²⁷ were it not that I feared the provocation of the enemy, lest their adversaries should judge wrongly, lest they should say, 'Our hand is exalted, the LORD has not done all this.'"

⁷ Joshua said, "Alas, Lord GOD, why have you brought this people over the Jordan at all, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to cause us to perish? I wish that we had been content and lived beyond the Jordan.

⁹ For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land will hear of it, and will surround us, and cut off our name from the earth. What will you do for your great name?"

⁸ But as for me, I am full of power by the Spirit of the LORD, and of judgment, and of might, to declare to Jacob his disobedience, and to Israel his sin.

⁶ But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins..." (then he said to the paralytic), "Get up, and take up your mat, and go up to your house."

⁸ Now when the crowds saw it, they were afraid and glorified God who had given such authority to men.

⁵ you must not bow yourself down to them, nor serve them, for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, and upon the children's children, on the third and on the fourth [generation] of those who hate me,

⁶ The LORD passed by before him, and proclaimed, "The LORD, the LORD, a merciful and gracious God, slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness and truth, ⁷ keeping loving kindness for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin; and that will by no means clear [the guilty], visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, and upon the children's children, upon the third and upon the fourth [generation]."

⁹ You must not bow down yourself to them, nor serve them; for I, the LORD, your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, upon the third and upon the fourth [generation] of those who hate me;

⁸ The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness.

² Therefore thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, against the shepherds who feed my people: "You have scattered my flock, and driven them away, and have not visited them; look, I will visit on you the evil of your doings," says the LORD.

² He prayed to the LORD, and said, "Please, LORD, wasn't this what I said when I was still in my own country? Therefore I hurried to flee to Tarshish, for I knew that you are a gracious God, and merciful, slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness, and you relent of doing harm.

¹⁸ Who is a God like you, who pardons iniquity, and passes over the disobedience of the remnant of his heritage? He doesn't retain his anger forever, because he delights in loving kindness.

² The LORD is a jealous God and avenges. The LORD avenges and is full of wrath. The LORD takes vengeance on his adversaries, and he maintains wrath against his enemies. ³ The LORD is slow to anger, and great in power, and will by no means leave the guilty unpunished. The LORD has his way in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet.

²⁴ being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus; ²⁵ whom God set forth whom God displayed publicly as a mercy seat, through faith in his blood, for a demonstration of his righteousness, because in God's forbearance he had passed over the sins previously committed; ²⁶ to demonstrate his righteousness at this present time, so that he would be just, and the justifier of him who has faith in Jesus.

²¹ that as sin reigned in death, even so grace might reign through righteousness to everlasting life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

⁷ in whom we have our redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, ⁸ which he made to abound toward us in all wisdom and prudence,

¹⁰ Now therefore leave me alone, that my wrath may burn hot against them, and that I may consume them; and I will make of you a great nation."

³² Yet now, if you will, forgive their sin—and if not, please blot me out of your book which you have written."

¹⁷ The LORD said to Moses, "I will do this thing also that you have spoken; for you have found favor in my sight, and I know you by name."

⁹ He said, "If now I have found favor in your sight, Lord, please let the Lord go in the midst of us; although this is a stiff-necked people; pardon our iniquity and our sin, and take us for your inheritance."

³⁴ then hear in heaven, and forgive the sin of your people Israel, and bring them again to the land which you gave to their fathers.

¹ [For the Chief Musician. A Psalm by David, when Nathan the prophet came to him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba.] Have mercy on me, God, according to your loving kindness. According to the multitude of your tender mercies, blot out my transgressions. ² Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity. Cleanse me from my sin.

³⁸ But he, being merciful, forgave iniquity, and did not destroy them. Yes, many times he turned his anger away, and did not stir up all his wrath.

⁷ Our fathers did not understand your wonders in Egypt. They did not remember the multitude of your loving kindnesses, but were rebellious at the sea, even at the Sea at the End. ⁸ Nevertheless he saved them for his name's sake, that he might make his mighty power known.

⁷ let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; and let him return to the LORD, and he will have mercy on him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.

⁸ But they rebelled against me, and would not listen to me; they each didn't throw away the abominations of their eyes, neither did they forsake the idols of Egypt. Then I said I would pour out my wrath on them, to accomplish my anger against them in the midst of the land of Egypt. ⁹ But I worked for my name's sake, that it should not be profaned in the sight of the nations, among which they were, in whose sight I made myself known to them, in bringing them forth out of the land of Egypt.

¹⁹ Lord, hear. Lord, forgive. Lord, listen and take action. Do not delay, for your own sake, my God, because your city and your people are called by your name."

¹⁰ God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way. God relented of the disaster which he said he would do to them, and he did not do it.

⁴ But when the kindness of God our Savior and his love toward humankind appeared, ⁵ not by works of righteousness, which we did ourselves, but according to his mercy, he saved us, through the washing of rebirth and renewing by the Holy Spirit, ⁶ whom he poured out on us richly, through Jesus Christ our Savior; ⁷ that, being justified by his grace, we might be made heirs according to the hope of everlasting life.

¹⁵ And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.

¹⁴ This is the boldness which we have toward him, that, if we ask anything according to his will, he listens to us. ¹⁵ And if we know that he listens to us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions which we have asked of him. ¹⁶ If anyone sees his brother sinning a sin not leading to death, he should ask, and he will give him life for those who sin not leading to death. There is a sin leading to death. I do not say that he should make a request concerning this.

¹⁸ Who is a God like you, who pardons iniquity, and passes over the disobedience of the remnant of his heritage? He doesn't retain his anger forever, because he delights in loving kindness. ¹⁹ He will again have compassion on us. He will tread our iniquities under foot; and you will cast all their sins into the depths of the sea. ²⁰ You will give truth to Jacob, and mercy to Abraham, as you have sworn to our fathers from the days of old.

¹⁶ Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerfully effective.

⁴⁰ For I lift up my hand to heaven, and say, 'As I live forever,

¹⁹ Blessed be his glorious name forever. Let the whole earth be filled with his glory. Amen and amen.

³ One called to another, and said, "Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts. The whole earth is full of his glory."

¹⁸ Lift up your eyes all around, and see: all these gather themselves together, and come to you. As I live," says the LORD, "you shall surely clothe yourself with them all as with an ornament, and dress yourself with them, like a bride.

²⁴ As I live," says the LORD, "though Coniah the son of Jehoiakim king of Judah were the signet on my right hand, yet would I pluck you there;

¹¹ "'Therefore as I live,' says the Lord GOD, 'surely, because you have defiled my sanctuary with all your detestable things, and with all your abominations, therefore I will also diminish you; neither shall my eye spare, and I also will have no pity.

³ As I live, says the Lord GOD, you shall not have occasion any more to use this proverb in Israel.

¹¹ Tell them, 'As I live,' says the Lord GOD, 'I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn, turn from your evil ways; for why will you die, house of Israel?'

²⁷ "You shall tell them, 'Thus says the Lord GOD: "As I live, surely those who are in the waste places shall fall by the sword; and him who is in the open field will I give to the animals to be devoured; and those who are in the strongholds and in the caves shall die of the pestilence.

¹⁴ For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea.

⁹ Therefore as I live, says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, surely Moab will be as Sodom, and the people of Ammon as Gomorrah, a possession of nettles, and salt pits, and a perpetual desolation. The remnant of my people will plunder them, and the survivors of my nation will inherit them.

¹⁰ Let your Kingdom come. Let your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

⁷ Yet your father has cheated me and changed my wages ten times, but God did not allow him to hurt me.

⁴¹ These twenty years I have been in your house. I served you fourteen years for your two daughters, and six years for your flock, and you have changed my wages ten times.

¹¹ They said to Moses, "Because there were no graves in Egypt, have you taken us away to die in the wilderness? Why have you treated us this way, to bring us forth out of Egypt?

² Therefore the people quarreled with Moses, and said, "Give us water to drink." Moses said to them, "Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you test the LORD?"

¹ When the people saw that Moses delayed to come down from the mountain, the people gathered themselves together to Aaron, and said to him, "Come, make us gods, which shall go before us; for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him."

¹¹ The LORD said to Moses, "How long will this people despise me? And how long will they not believe in me, for all the signs which I have worked among them?

³¹ and in the wilderness, where you have seen how that the LORD your God bore you, as a man does bear his son, in all the way that you went, until you came to this place." ³² Yet in this thing you did not believe the LORD your God, ³³ who went before you in the way, to seek you out a place to pitch your tents in, in fire by night, to show you by what way you should go, and in the cloud by day. ³⁴ The LORD heard the voice of your words, and was angry, and swore, saying, ³⁵ "Surely not one of these men of this evil generation shall see the good land, which I swore to give to your fathers,

³ You have reproached me ten times. You aren't ashamed that you attack me.

⁹ when your fathers tempted me, tested me, and saw my work. ¹⁰ For forty years I loathed that generation, and said, "It is a people who go astray in their heart, and they do not know my ways." ¹¹ Therefore I swore in my wrath, "They won't enter into my rest."

¹⁴ but gave in to craving in the desert, and tested God in the wasteland.

²⁶ Therefore he swore to them that he would overthrow them in the wilderness,

¹⁵ Now we call the proud blessed; indeed, evildoers prosper. They even tempt God and escape.'

⁷ Jesus said to him, "Again, it is written, 'Do not test the Lord your God.'"

⁵ However with most of them, God was not well pleased, for they were overthrown in the wilderness.

⁹ Neither let us test the Christ, as some of them tested, and perished by the serpents.

⁹ where your fathers tested me and challenged me, and saw my works for forty years.

¹⁷ With whom was he displeased forty years? Was not it with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness? ¹⁸ To whom did he swear that they would not enter into his rest, but to those who were disobedient?

⁶⁴ But among these there was not a man of them who were numbered by Moses and Aaron the priest, who numbered the children of Israel in the wilderness of Sinai.

¹¹ 'Surely none of the men who came up out of Egypt, from twenty years old and upward, shall see the land which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob; because they have not wholly followed me:

³⁵ "Surely not one of these men of this evil generation shall see the good land, which I swore to give to your fathers, ³⁶ except Caleb the son of Jephunneh: he shall see it; and to him will I give the land that he has trodden on, and to his children, because he has wholly followed the LORD." ³⁷ Also the LORD was angry with me for your sakes, saying, "You also shall not go in there: ³⁸ Joshua the son of Nun, who stands before you, he shall go in there. Encourage him, because he will cause Israel to inherit it. ³⁹ Moreover your little ones, whom you said should be a prey, and your children, who this day have no knowledge of good or evil, they shall go in there, and to them will I give it, and they shall possess it. ⁴⁰ But as for you, turn, and take your journey into the wilderness by the way to the Lake of Rushes." ⁴¹ Then you answered and said to me, "We have sinned against the LORD our God, we will go up and fight, according to all that the LORD our God commanded us." Every man of you put on his weapons of war, and presumed to go up into the hill country. ⁴² The LORD said to me, "Tell them, 'Do not go up, neither fight; for I am not among you; lest you be struck before your enemies.'" ⁴³ So I spoke to you, and you did not listen; but you rebelled against the commandment of the LORD, and were presumptuous, and went up into the hill country. ⁴⁴ The Amorites, who lived in that hill country, came out against you, and chased you, as bees do, and beat you down in Seir, even to Hormah. ⁴⁵ You returned and wept before the LORD; but the LORD did not listen to your voice, nor gave ear to you.

²³ You also multiplied their children as the stars of the sky, and brought them into the land concerning which you said to their fathers, that they should go in to possess it.

¹¹ Therefore I swore in my wrath, "They won't enter into my rest."

¹⁵ "'"Moreover also I swore to them in the wilderness, that I would not bring them into the land which I had given to them, flowing with milk and honey, which is the most beautiful of all lands;

³ For we who have believed do enter into that rest, even as he has said, "As I swore in my wrath, they will not enter into my rest;" although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.

⁶ Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who were of those who spied out the land, tore their clothes: ⁷ and they spoke to all the congregation of the children of Israel, saying, "The land, which we passed through to spy it out, is an exceeding good land. ⁸ If the LORD delights in us, then he will bring us into this land, and give it to us; a land which flows with milk and honey. ⁹ Only do not rebel against the LORD, neither fear the people of the land; for they are bread for us: their defense is removed from over them, and the LORD is with us. Do not fear them."

⁶⁵ For the LORD had said of them, They shall surely die in the wilderness. There was not left a man of them, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun.

¹¹ 'Surely none of the men who came up out of Egypt, from twenty years old and upward, shall see the land which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob; because they have not wholly followed me: ¹² except Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite, and Joshua the son of Nun; because they have followed the LORD completely.'

³⁶ except Caleb the son of Jephunneh: he shall see it; and to him will I give the land that he has trodden on, and to his children, because he has wholly followed the LORD."

⁵ And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might.

⁶ Then the descendants of Judah drew near to Joshua in Gilgal. Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to him, "You know the thing that the LORD spoke to Moses the man of God concerning me and concerning you in Kadesh Barnea. ⁷ I was forty years old when Moses the servant of the LORD sent me from Kadesh Barnea to spy out the land. I brought him word again as it was in my heart. ⁸ Nevertheless, my brothers who went up with me made the heart of the people melt; but I wholly followed the LORD my God. ⁹ Moses swore on that day, saying, 'Surely the land where you walked shall be an inheritance to you and to your children forever, because you have wholly followed the LORD my God.' ¹⁰ Now, look, the LORD has kept me alive, as he spoke, these forty-five years, from the time that the LORD spoke this word to Moses, while Israel walked in the wilderness. Now, look, I am eighty-five years old, today. ¹¹ I am still as strong today as I was in the day that Moses sent me: as my strength was then, even so is my strength now for war, to go out and to come in. ¹² Now therefore give me this hill country, of which the LORD spoke in that day; for you heard in that day how the Anakim were there, and great and fortified cities. It may be that the LORD will be with me, and I shall drive them out, as the LORD spoke." ¹³ Joshua blessed him; and he gave Hebron to Caleb the son of Jephunneh for an inheritance. ¹⁴ Therefore Hebron became the inheritance of Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite to this day; because he wholly followed the LORD, the God of Israel.

⁹ Then the people rejoiced, because they offered willingly, because with a perfect heart they offered willingly to the LORD: and David the king also rejoiced with great joy.

¹⁸ The LORD, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Israel, our fathers, keep this forever in the imagination of the thoughts of the heart of your people, and prepare their heart for you;

² He did that which was right in the eyes of the LORD, but not with a perfect heart.

⁸⁰ Let my heart be blameless toward your decrees, that I may not be disappointed.

¹⁴⁵ QOPH. I have called with my whole heart. Answer me, LORD. I will keep your statutes.

²⁶ My son, give me your heart; and let your eyes keep in my ways.

²³ who, when he had come, and had seen the grace of God, was glad. He exhorted them all, that with purpose of heart they should remain true to the Lord.

⁶ not in the way of service only when eyes are on you, as people-pleasers; but as servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart;

²³ And whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for people,

²⁹ Amalek dwells in the land of the Negev: and the Hethites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, and the Amorites, dwell in the hill country; and the Canaanite dwells by the sea, and along by the side of the Jordan."

⁴ And they said to one another, "Let us make a captain, and let us return into Egypt."

⁴⁰ But as for you, turn, and take your journey into the wilderness by the way to the Lake of Rushes."

¹¹ But my people did not listen to my voice. Israel desired none of me. ¹² So I let them go after the stubbornness of their hearts, that they might walk in their own counsels. ¹³ Oh that my people would listen to me, that Israel would walk in my ways.

³¹ Therefore they will eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own schemes.

¹² "I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel. Speak to them, saying, 'At evening you shall eat meat, and in the morning you shall be filled with bread: and you shall know that I am the LORD your God.'"

⁷ Jesus came and touched them and said, "Get up, and do not be afraid."

² All the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron: and the whole congregation said to them, "Would that we had died in the land of Egypt, or would that we had died in this wilderness.

²¹ But truly, as I live, and as all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the LORD;

⁶⁴ But among these there was not a man of them who were numbered by Moses and Aaron the priest, who numbered the children of Israel in the wilderness of Sinai. ⁶⁵ For the LORD had said of them, They shall surely die in the wilderness. There was not left a man of them, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun.

³⁵ "Surely not one of these men of this evil generation shall see the good land, which I swore to give to your fathers,

⁸ You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your presence. ⁹ For all our days have passed away in your wrath. We bring our years to an end as a sigh.

¹⁷ With whom was he displeased forty years? Was not it with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness?

⁴⁵ So all those who were numbered of the children of Israel by their fathers' houses, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out to war in Israel;

³² But as for you, your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness. ³³ Your children shall be wanderers in the wilderness forty years, and shall bear your prostitution, until your dead bodies be consumed in the wilderness.

⁵ Now I want to remind you, though you already know all these things, that the Lord, having saved a people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed those who did not believe.

²² Abram said to the king of Sodom, "I have lifted up my hand to God Most High, Maker of heaven and earth,

¹² except Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite, and Joshua the son of Nun; because they have followed the LORD completely.'

³⁶ except Caleb the son of Jephunneh: he shall see it; and to him will I give the land that he has trodden on, and to his children, because he has wholly followed the LORD." ³⁷ Also the LORD was angry with me for your sakes, saying, "You also shall not go in there: ³⁸ Joshua the son of Nun, who stands before you, he shall go in there. Encourage him, because he will cause Israel to inherit it.

³⁴ Jacob gave Esau bread and stew of lentils. He ate and drank, rose up, and went his way. So Esau despised his birthright.

³ Why does the LORD bring us to this land, to fall by the sword? Our wives and our little ones will be a prey: wouldn't it be better for us to return into Egypt?"

⁶ of Hezron, the family of the Hezronites; of Carmi, the family of the Carmites.

³⁹ Moreover your little ones, whom you said should be a prey, and your children, who this day have no knowledge of good or evil, they shall go in there, and to them will I give it, and they shall possess it.

²⁵ but you have ignored all my counsel, and wanted none of my reproof;

³⁰ They wanted none of my counsel. They despised all my reproof.

⁵ But they made light of it, and went their ways, one to his own farm, another to his merchandise,

⁴¹ 'Look, you scoffers, and be amazed, and perish; for I am working a work in your days, a work which you will not believe, if one tells it to you.'"

¹⁶ that there be no sexually immoral or profane person like Esau, who sold his own birthright for one meal. ¹⁷ For you know that even when he afterward desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no place for a change of mind though he sought it diligently with tears.

²⁹ your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness; and all who were numbered of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward, who have murmured against me,

³¹ The man shall be free from iniquity, and that woman shall bear her iniquity."

¹³ The LORD's anger was kindled against Israel, and he made them wander back and forth in the wilderness forty years, until all the generation, who had done evil in the sight of the LORD, was consumed.

³⁸ Aaron the priest went up into Mount Hor at the commandment of the LORD, and died there, in the fortieth year after the children of Israel had come out of the land of Egypt, in the fifth month, on the first day of the month.

³ It happened in the fortieth year, in the eleventh month, on the first day of the month, that Moses spoke to the children of Israel, according to all that the LORD had given him in commandment to them;

¹⁴ The days in which we came from Kadesh Barnea, until we had come over the Wadi Zered, were thirty-eight years; until all the generation of the men of war were consumed from the midst of the camp, as the LORD swore to them.

¹⁰ Now, look, the LORD has kept me alive, as he spoke, these forty-five years, from the time that the LORD spoke this word to Moses, while Israel walked in the wilderness. Now, look, I am eighty-five years old, today.

⁴ They wandered in the wilderness in a desert way. They found no city to live in.

⁴⁰ He pours contempt on princes, and causes them to wander in a trackless waste.

¹ "They say, 'If a man puts away his wife, and she goes from him, and become another man's, will he return to her again?' Wouldn't that land be greatly polluted? But you have played the prostitute with many lovers; yet return again to me," says the LORD. ² "Lift up your eyes to the bare heights, and see. Where have you not been lain with? You have sat for them by the ways, as an Arabian in the wilderness. You have polluted the land with your prostitution and with your wickedness.

³⁵ "Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: 'Because you have forgotten me, and cast me behind your back, therefore you also bear your lewdness and your prostitution.'"

⁴⁵ Righteous men, they shall judge them with the judgment of adulteresses, and with the judgment of women who shed blood; because they are adulteresses, and blood is in their hands. ⁴⁶ "For thus says the Lord GOD: 'I will bring up a company against them, and will give them to be tossed back and forth and robbed. ⁴⁷ The company shall stone them with stones, and dispatch them with their swords; they shall kill their sons and their daughters, and burn up their houses with fire. ⁴⁸ 'Thus will I cause lewdness to cease out of the land, that all women may be taught not to do after your lewdness. ⁴⁹ They shall recompense your lewdness on you, and you shall bear the sins of your idols; and you shall know that I am the Lord GOD.'"

¹ Do not rejoice, Israel, to jubilation like the nations; for you were unfaithful to your God. You love the wages of a prostitute at every grain threshing floor.

¹⁹ "'You shall not uncover the nakedness of your mother's sister, nor of your father's sister; for he has made naked his close relative: they shall bear their iniquity.

²⁵ They returned from spying out the land at the end of forty days.

²³ But the Levites shall do the service of the Tent of Meeting, and they shall bear their iniquity: it shall be a statute forever throughout your generations; and among the children of Israel they shall have no inheritance.

¹⁶ The LORD said to Moses, "Look, you shall sleep with your fathers; and this people will rise up, and play the prostitute after the strange gods of the land, where they go to be among them, and will forsake me, and break my covenant which I have made with them. ¹⁷ Then my anger shall be kindled against them in that day, and I will forsake them, and I will hide my face from them, and they shall be devoured, and many evils and troubles shall come on them; so that they will say in that day, 'Haven't these evils come on us because our God is not among us?'

³⁰ "Therefore the LORD, the God of Israel, says, 'I said indeed that your house, and the house of your father, should walk before me forever.' But now the LORD says, 'Be it far from me; for those who honor me I will honor, and those who despise me shall be lightly esteemed.

⁵⁶ "Blessed be the LORD, who has given rest to his people Israel, according to all that he promised. There has not failed one word of all his good promise, which he promised by Moses his servant.

²¹ to fulfill the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah, until the land had enjoyed its Sabbaths. As long as it lay desolate it kept Sabbath, to fulfill seventy years.

⁴ For my iniquities have gone over my head. As a heavy burden, they are too heavy for me.

⁸ Has his loving kindness vanished forever? Does his promise fail for generations?

¹⁰ For forty years I loathed that generation, and said, "It is a people who go astray in their heart, and they do not know my ways."

⁴² For he remembered his holy word, and Abraham, his servant.

⁹ At what instant I shall speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to build and to plant it; ¹⁰ if they do that which is evil in my sight, that they not obey my voice, then I will repent of the good, with which I said I would benefit them.

³¹ For the LORD will not reject forever. ³² For though he may cause grief, yet he will have compassion according to the abundance of his loving kindness. ³³ For he is not predisposed to bring affliction or suffering to human beings.

⁶ "Again, when you have accomplished these, you shall lie on your right side, and shall bear the iniquity of the house of Judah: forty days, each day for a year, have I appointed it to you.

¹⁰ They shall bear their iniquity: the iniquity of the prophet shall be even as the iniquity of him who seeks him;

²⁴ Seventy weeks are decreed on your people and on your holy city, to put an end to the transgression, and to make an end to sin, and to atone for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most holy place.

¹⁰ I took my staff Favor, and cut it apart, that I might break my covenant that I had made with all the peoples.

¹ Let us fear therefore, lest perhaps anyone of you should seem to have come short of a promise of entering into his rest.

³ I will give power to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy one thousand two hundred sixty days, clothed in sackcloth."

¹⁹ God is not a man, that he should lie, nor the son of man, that he should repent. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not make it good?

¹¹ Now these things happened to them by way of example, and they were written for our admonition, on whom the ends of the ages have come.

¹⁹ We see that they were not able to enter in because of unbelief.

⁴ These were their names: Of the tribe of Reuben, Shammua the son of Zakkur. ⁵ Of the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat the son of Hori. ⁶ Of the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh. ⁷ Of the tribe of Issachar, Igal the son of Joseph. ⁸ Of the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea the son of Nun. ⁹ Of the tribe of Benjamin, Palti the son of Raphu. ¹⁰ Of the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel the son of Sodi. ¹¹ Of the tribe of Joseph, of the tribe of Manasseh, Gaddi the son of Susi. ¹² Of the tribe of Dan, Ammiel the son of Gemalli. ¹³ Of the tribe of Asher, Sethur the son of Michael. ¹⁴ Of the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi the son of Vophsi. ¹⁵ Of the tribe of Gad, Geuel the son of Maki. ¹⁶ These are the names of the men who Moses sent to spy out the land. Moses called Hoshea the son of Nun Joshua.

³¹ But the men who went up with him said, "We aren't able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we." ³² They brought up an evil report of the land which they had spied out to the children of Israel, saying, "The land, through which we have gone to spy it out, is a land that eats up its inhabitants; and all the people who we saw in it are men of great stature. ³³ There we saw the Nephilim, the sons of Anak, who come of the Nephilim: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight."

¹² I will strike them with the pestilence, and disinherit them, and I will make of you and your father's house a nation greater and mightier than they."

⁴⁹ Now those who died by the plague were fourteen thousand and seven hundred, besides those who died about the matter of Korah.

¹⁶ Therefore thus says the LORD, 'Look, I will send you away from off the surface of the earth: this year you shall die, because you have spoken rebellion against the LORD.'" ¹⁷ So Hananiah the prophet died the same year in the seventh month.

³² therefore," thus says the LORD, "Look, I will punish Shemaiah the Nehelamite, and his offspring; he shall not have a man to dwell among this people, neither shall he see the good that I will do to my people, says the LORD, because he has spoken rebellion against the LORD."'"

⁴ When the people heard this evil news, they mourned: and no one put on his jewelry.

³ The foolishness of man subverts his way; his heart rages against the LORD.

¹⁶ LORD, in trouble they sought you. They poured out a prayer when your chastening was on them.

¹² but the children of the Kingdom will be thrown out into the outer darkness. There will be weeping and grinding of teeth."

¹⁷ For you know that even when he afterward desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no place for a change of mind though he sought it diligently with tears.

⁴¹ Then you answered and said to me, "We have sinned against the LORD our God, we will go up and fight, according to all that the LORD our God commanded us." Every man of you put on his weapons of war, and presumed to go up into the hill country.

³ This is an evil in all that is done under the sun, that there is one event to all: yes also, the heart of the sons of men is full of evil, and madness is in their heart while they live, and after that they go to the dead.

²¹ Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. ²² Many will tell me in that day, 'Lord, Lord, did not we prophesy in your name, in your name cast out demons, and in your name do many mighty works?' ²³ And then I will tell them, 'I never knew you. Depart from me, you who practice lawlessness.'

¹¹ For you always have the poor with you; but you do not always have me. ¹² For in pouring this ointment on my body, she did it to prepare me for burial.

²⁵ When once the master of the house has risen up, and has shut the door, and you begin to stand outside, and to knock at the door, saying, 'Lord, open to us.' then he will answer and tell you, 'I do not know you or where you come from.'

²⁵ Now the Amalekite and the Canaanite dwell in the valley: tomorrow turn, and go into the wilderness by the way to the Sea at the End."

²⁰ The Spirit of God came on Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest; and he stood above the people, and said to them, "Thus says God, 'Why do you disobey the commandments of the LORD, so that you can't prosper? Because you have forsaken the LORD, he has also forsaken you.'"

⁹ By the breath of God they perish. By the blast of his anger are they consumed.

³⁷ From there also you shall go forth, with your hands on your head; for the LORD has rejected those in whom you trust, and you shall not prosper with them.

⁵ and he shall bring Zedekiah to Babylon, and he shall be there until I visit him," says the LORD: "though you fight with the Chaldeans, you shall not prosper?"'"

⁴² The LORD said to me, "Tell them, 'Do not go up, neither fight; for I am not among you; lest you be struck before your enemies.'"

⁸ Oh, Lord, what shall I say, after that Israel has turned their backs before their enemies.

¹² Therefore the children of Israel can't stand before their enemies. They turn their backs before their enemies, because they have become devoted for destruction. I will not be with you any more, unless you destroy the devoted things from among you.

A contemplative psalm.] We have heard with our ears, God; our fathers have told us, what work you did in their days, in the days of old. ² You drove out the nations with your hand, but you planted them. You afflicted the peoples, but you spread them abroad. ³ For they did not get the land in possession by their own sword, neither did their own arm save them; but your right hand, and your arm, and the light of your face, because you were favorable to them. ⁴ You are my King, my God, who commands victories for Jacob. ⁵ Through you we will push back our adversaries. Through your name we will trample down those who rise up against us. ⁶ For I will not trust in my bow, neither shall my sword save me. ⁷ But you have saved us from our adversaries, and have shamed those who hate us. ⁸ In God we have made our boast all day long, we will give thanks to your name forever. Selah. ⁹ But now you rejected us, and brought us to dishonor, and do not go out with our armies. ¹⁰ You make us turn back from the adversary. Those who hate us take spoil for themselves. ¹¹ You have made us like sheep for food, and have scattered us among the nations.

¹⁷ I will set my face against you, and you will be struck before your enemies. Those who hate you will rule over you; and you will flee when no one pursues you.

²⁵ The LORD will cause you to be struck before your enemies; you shall go out one way against them, and shall flee seven ways before them: and you shall be tossed back and forth among all the kingdoms of the earth.

²⁰ She said, "The Philistines are upon you, Samson." He awoke out of his sleep, and said, "I will go out as at other times, and shake myself free." But he didn't know that the LORD had departed from him.

⁹ You, Solomon my son, know the God of your father, and serve him with a perfect heart and with a willing mind; for the LORD searches all hearts, and understands all the imaginations of the thoughts. If you seek him, he will be found by you; but if you forsake him, he will cast you off forever.

¹² Though they bring up their children, yet I will bereave them, so that not a man shall be left. Indeed, woe also to them when I depart from them.

³³ They set forward from the Mount of the LORD three days' journey. The ark of the covenant of the LORD went before them three days' journey, to seek out a resting place for them.

³⁰ "'But the person who acts defiantly, whether he is native-born or a foreigner, the same blasphemes God, and that person is to be cut off from among his people.

⁶ Moses sent them, one thousand of every tribe, to the war, them and Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, to the war, with the vessels of the sanctuary and the trumpets for the alarm in his hand.

⁴³ So I spoke to you, and you did not listen; but you rebelled against the commandment of the LORD, and were presumptuous, and went up into the hill country.

³ When the people had come into the camp, the elders of Israel said, "Why has the LORD struck us today before the Philistines? Let us get the ark of the covenant of the LORD out of Shiloh to us, that it may come among us, and save us out of the hand of our enemies." ⁴ So the people sent to Shiloh; and they brought from there the ark of the covenant of the LORD of hosts, who sits above the cherubim: and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God. ⁵ When the ark of the covenant of the LORD came into the camp, all Israel shouted with a great shout, so that the earth rang again. ⁶ When the Philistines heard the noise of the shout, they said, "What does the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews mean?" They understood that the ark of the LORD had come into the camp. ⁷ The Philistines were afraid, for they said, "Gods have come into the camp." They said, "Woe to us. For there has not been such a thing before. ⁸ Woe to us. Who shall deliver us out of the hand of these mighty gods? These are the gods that struck the Egyptians with all kinds of plagues in the wilderness. ⁹ Be strong, and behave like men, O you Philistines, that you not be servants to the Hebrews, as they have been to you. Strengthen yourselves like men, and fight." ¹⁰ So they fought, and Israel was defeated, and they fled every man to his tent. And there was a very great slaughter, for there fell of Israel thirty thousand footmen. ¹¹ The ark of God was taken; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were slain.

¹⁶ He said, "A hand upon the throne of the LORD. The LORD will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.'"

⁴³ For there the Amalekite and the Canaanite are before you, and you shall fall by the sword: because you are turned back from following the LORD, therefore the LORD will not be with you."

³ The LORD listened to the voice of Israel, and delivered up the Canaanites; and they utterly destroyed them and their cities: and the name of the place was called Hormah.

⁴⁴ The Amorites, who lived in that hill country, came out against you, and chased you, as bees do, and beat you down in Seir, even to Hormah.

³⁰ How could one chase a thousand, and two put ten thousand to flight, unless their Rock had sold them, and the LORD had delivered them up?

⁵ The men of Ai struck about thirty-six men of them, and they chased them from before the gate even to the Shebarim, and struck them at the descent. The hearts of the people melted, and became like water.

¹¹ Israel has sinned, and they have even transgressed my covenant which I commanded them. And they have even taken of the devoted things, and have also stolen, and also deceived. They have even put it among their own stuff. ¹² Therefore the children of Israel can't stand before their enemies. They turn their backs before their enemies, because they have become devoted for destruction. I will not be with you any more, unless you destroy the devoted things from among you.

¹⁷ Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they struck the Canaanites who inhabited Zephath, and utterly destroyed it. The name of the city was called Hormah.
