He built it, and covered it, and set up its doors, its bolts, and its bars, and the wall of the Pool of Shiloah by the king's garden, even to the stairs that go down from the City of David. ¹⁶ After him, Nehemiah the son of Azbuk, the ruler of half the district of Beth Zur, made repairs to the place opposite the tombs of David, and to the pool that was made, and to the house of the mighty men. ¹⁷ After him, the Levites made repairs: Rehum the son of Bani, and next to him, Hashabiah, he ruler of half the district of Keilah, made repairs for his district. ¹⁸ After him, their brothers, Binnui the son of Henadad, the ruler of half the district of Keilah made repairs. ¹⁹ Next to him, Ezer the son of Jeshua, the ruler of Mizpah, repaired another portion, across from the ascent to the armory at the turning of the wall. ²⁰ After him, Baruch the son of Zabbai earnestly repaired another portion, from the turning of the wall to the door of the house of Eliashib the high priest. ²¹ After him, Meremoth the son of Uriah the son of Hakkoz repaired another portion, from the door of the house of Eliashib even to the end of the house of Eliashib. ²² After him, the priests, the men of the Plain made repairs. ²³ After them, Benjamin and Hasshub made repairs across from their house. After them, Azariah the son of Maaseiah the son of Ananiah made repairs beside his own house. ²⁴ After him, Binnui the son of Henadad repaired another portion, from the house of Azariah to the turning of the wall, and to the corner. ²⁵ Palal the son of Uzai made repairs opposite the turning of the wall, and the tower that stands out from the upper house of the king, which is by the court of the guard. After him Pedaiah the son of Parosh made repairs. ²⁶ (Now the Nethinim lived in Ophel, to the place over against the Water Gate toward the east, and the tower that stands out.) ²⁷ After him the Tekoites repaired another portion, over against the great tower that stands out, and to the wall of Ophel. ²⁸ Above the Horse Gate, the priests made repairs, everyone across from his own house. ²⁹ After them, Zadok the son of Immer made repairs across from his own house. After him, Shemaiah the son of Shecaniah, the keeper of the East Gate made repairs. ³⁰ After him, Hananiah the son of Shelemiah, and Hanun the sixth son of Zalaph, repaired another portion. After him, Meshullam the son of Berechiah made repairs across from his room. ³¹ After him, Malchijah one of the goldsmiths to the house of the Nethinim, and of the merchants, made repairs over against the Miphkad Gate, and to the ascent of the corner. ³² Between the ascent of the corner and the Sheep Gate, the goldsmiths and the merchants made repairs.

⁵ The officers shall speak to the people, saying, "What man is there who has built a new house, and has not dedicated it? Let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man dedicate it.

²⁰ After him, Baruch the son of Zabbai earnestly repaired another portion, from the turning of the wall to the door of the house of Eliashib the high priest.

³² Between the ascent of the corner and the Sheep Gate, the goldsmiths and the merchants made repairs.

¹ Now it happened, when it was reported to Sanballat and Tobiah, and to Geshem the Arabian, and to the rest of our enemies, that I had built the wall, and that there was no breach left in it; (though even to that time I had not set up the doors in the gates;)

¹ Now it happened, when the wall was built, and I had set up the doors, and the gatekeepers and the singers and the Levites were appointed,

²⁸ One of the sons of Joiada, the son of Eliashib the high priest, was son-in-law to Sanballat the Horonite: therefore I chased him from me.

¹⁴ Now after this he built an outer wall to the City of David, on the west side of Gihon, in the valley, even to the entrance at the Fish Gate; and he encircled Ophel with it, and raised it up to a very great height: and he put valiant captains in all the fortified cities of Judah.

⁸ and a letter to Asaph the keeper of the king's forest, that he may give me timber to make beams for the gates of the citadel by the temple, for the wall of the city, and for the house that I shall enter into." The king granted my requests, because of the good hand of my God on me.

⁶ Joiada the son of Paseah and Meshullam the son of Besodeiah repaired the Old Gate. They laid its beams, and set up its doors, and its bolts, and its bars.

¹⁰ In that day, says the LORD, there will be the noise of a cry from the Fish Gate, a wailing from the second quarter, and a great crashing from the hills.

³³ On the fourth day the silver and the gold and the vessels were weighed in the house of our God into the hand of Meremoth the son of Uriah the priest; and with him was Eleazar the son of Phinehas; and with them was Jozabad the son of Jeshua, and Noadiah the son of Binnui, the Levite;

²¹ After him, Meremoth the son of Uriah the son of Hakkoz repaired another portion, from the door of the house of Eliashib even to the end of the house of Eliashib.

²³ Curse Meroz, said the angel of the LORD. Curse bitterly its inhabitants, because they did not come to help the LORD, to help the LORD against the mighty.

² Joab sent to Tekoa, and fetched there a wise woman, and said to her, "Please act like a mourner, and put on mourning clothing, please, and do not anoint yourself with oil, but be as a woman who has mourned a long time for the dead.

²⁷ After him the Tekoites repaired another portion, over against the great tower that stands out, and to the wall of Ophel.

⁴ Then I said, "Surely these are poor. They are foolish; for they do not know the way of the LORD, nor the law of their God. ⁵ I will go to the great men, and will speak to them; for they know the way of the LORD, and the law of their God." But these with one accord have broken the yoke, and burst the bonds.

² "Thus says the LORD to me: Make bonds and bars, and put them on your neck;

⁸ It shall happen, that the nation and the kingdom which will not serve the same Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and that will not put their neck under the yoke of the king of Babylon, that nation will I punish, says the LORD, with the sword, and with the famine, and with the pestilence, until I have consumed them by his hand.

¹² I spoke to Zedekiah king of Judah according to all these words, saying, "Bring your necks under the yoke of the king of Babylon, and serve him and his people, and live.

⁸ It shall come to pass in that day," says the LORD of hosts, "that I will break his yoke from off your neck, and will burst your bonds; and strangers shall no more make him their bondservant; ⁹ but they shall serve the LORD their God, and David their king, whom I will raise up to them.

¹ The words of Amos, who was among the herdsmen of Tekoa, which he saw concerning Israel in the days of Uzziah king of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash king of Israel, two years before the earthquake.

²⁹ Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you will find rest for your souls.

¹⁰ Now therefore why do you tempt God, that you should put a yoke on the neck of the disciples which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear?

²⁶ For consider your calling, brothers, that not many were wise from a human perspective, not many mighty, not many of noble birth.

¹⁷ Charge those who are rich in this present world that they not be haughty, nor have their hope set on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy; ¹⁸ that they do good, that they be rich in good works, that they be ready to distribute, willing to communicate;

³ But when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and to Ai, ⁴ they also resorted to a ruse, and went and made as if they had been ambassadors, and took old sacks on their donkeys, and wineskins, old and torn and bound up, ⁵ and old and patched shoes on their feet, and wore old garments. All the bread of their provision was dry and moldy. ⁶ They went to Joshua to the camp at Gilgal, and said to him, and to the men of Israel, "We have come from a far country. Now therefore make a covenant with us." ⁷ The men of Israel said to the Hivites, "What if you live among us. How could we make a covenant with you?" ⁸ They said to Joshua, "We are your servants." Joshua said to them, "Who are you? Where do you come from?" ⁹ They said to him, "Your servants have come from a very far country because of the name of the LORD your God; for we have heard of his fame, all that he did in Egypt, ¹⁰ and all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon king of Heshbon and to Og king of Bashan, who was at Ashtaroth. ¹¹ Our elders and all the inhabitants of our country spoke to us, saying, 'Take provision in your hand for the journey, and go to meet them, and tell them, "We are your servants. Now make a covenant with us."' ¹² This our bread we took hot for our provision out of our houses on the day we went out to go to you; but now, look, it is dry, and has become moldy. ¹³ These wineskins, which we filled, were new; and look, they are torn. These our garments and our shoes have become old because of the very long journey." ¹⁴ The men sampled their provisions, and did not ask counsel from the mouth of the LORD. ¹⁵ Joshua made peace with them, and made a covenant with them, to let them live. The leaders of the congregation swore to them. ¹⁶ It happened at the end of three days after they had made a covenant with them, that they heard that they were their neighbors, and that they lived among them. ¹⁷ The children of Israel traveled and came to their cities on the third day. Now their cities were Gibeon, Chephirah, Beeroth, and Kiriath Jearim. ¹⁸ The children of Israel did not strike them, because the leaders of the congregation had sworn to them by the LORD, the God of Israel. And the whole congregation murmured against the leaders. ¹⁹ But all the leaders said to all the congregation, "We have sworn to them by the LORD, the God of Israel; and now therefore we may not touch them. ²⁰ This we will do to them, and let them live; lest wrath be on us, because of the oath which we swore to them." ²¹ And the leaders said to them, "Let them live." So they became wood cutters and drawers of water for all the congregation, and all the congregation did as the leaders had spoken to them. ²² Joshua called for them, and he spoke to them, saying, "Why have you deceived us, saying, 'We are very far from you,' when you live among us? ²³ Now therefore you are cursed, and some of you will never fail to be bondservants, both wood cutters and drawers of water for the house of my God." ²⁴ They answered Joshua, and said, "Because your servants were certainly told how the LORD your God commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you. Therefore we were very afraid for our lives because of you, and have done this thing. ²⁵ Now, look, we are in your hand. Do to us as it seems good and right to you to do." ²⁶ He did so to them, and delivered them out of the hand of the children of Israel, so that they did not kill them. ²⁷ That day Joshua made them wood cutters and drawers of water for the congregation and for the altar of the LORD, to this day, in the place which he should choose.

² The king called the Gibeonites, and spoke to them. (Now the Gibeonites were not of the children of Israel, but of the remnant of the Amorites; and the children of Israel had sworn to them : and Saul sought to kill them in his zeal for the children of Israel and Judah.)

⁶ Then Asa the king took all Judah; and they carried away the stones of Ramah, and its timber, with which Baasha had built; and he built therewith Geba and Mizpah.

⁷ Moreover I said to the king, "If it pleases the king, let letters be given me to the governors beyond the River, that they may let me pass through until I come to Judah; ⁸ and a letter to Asaph the keeper of the king's forest, that he may give me timber to make beams for the gates of the citadel by the temple, for the wall of the city, and for the house that I shall enter into." The king granted my requests, because of the good hand of my God on me.

² Joseph commanded his servants the physicians to embalm his father. So the physicians embalmed Israel.

²⁵ You shall make it a holy anointing oil, a perfume compounded after the art of the perfumer: it shall be a holy anointing oil.

³¹ After him, Malchijah one of the goldsmiths to the house of the Nethinim, and of the merchants, made repairs over against the Miphkad Gate, and to the ascent of the corner. ³² Between the ascent of the corner and the Sheep Gate, the goldsmiths and the merchants made repairs.

³⁸ The other company of those who gave thanks went to meet them, and I after them, with the half of the people, on the wall, above the Tower of the Ovens, to the Broad Wall,

¹ Dead flies cause the oil of the perfumer to send forth an evil odor; so does a little folly outweigh wisdom and honor.

⁶ Some pour out gold from the bag, and weigh silver in the balance. They hire a goldsmith, and he makes it a god. They fall down—yes, they worship.

⁸ On the next day, we departed and came to Caesarea. We entered into the house of Philip the evangelist, who was one of the seven, and stayed with him. ⁹ Now this man had four virgin daughters who prophesied.

³ Yes, I ask you also, true companion, help these women, for they labored with me in the Good News, with Clement also, and the rest of my fellow workers, whose names are in the Book of Life.

³⁴ and Zanoah, and En Gannim, Tappuah, and Enam,

¹³ I went out by night by the Valley Gate, even toward the Serpent's Well, and to the Dung Gate, and viewed the walls of Jerusalem, which were broken down, and its gates were consumed with fire.

³⁰ Zanoah, Adullam, and their villages, Lachish and its fields, Azekah and its towns. So they camped from Beersheba to the Valley of Hinnom.

³¹ Then I brought up the leaders of Judah onto the wall, and appointed two great companies who gave thanks and went in procession. One went on the right hand on the wall toward the Dung Gate;

¹ "Flee for safety, you people of Benjamin, out of the midst of Jerusalem, and blow the trumpet in Tekoa, and raise up a signal on Beth Haccherem; for evil looks forth from the north, and a great destruction.

¹ Then all the children of Israel went out, and the congregation was assembled as one man, from Dan even to Beersheba, with the land of Gilead, to the LORD at Mizpah.

³ (Now the people of Benjamin heard that the children of Israel had gone up to Mizpah.) The children of Israel said, "Tell us, how did this wickedness happen?"

⁶ The king and his men went to Jerusalem against the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land, who spoke to David, saying, "You will not come in here, but the blind and the lame will repel you"; thinking, "David can't come in here." ⁷ Nevertheless David took the stronghold of Zion, that is, the City of David.

⁴ Then a breach was made in the city, and all the men of war fled by night by the way of the gate between the two walls, which was by the king's garden (now the Chaldeans were against the city around it); and they went by the way of the Arabah.

³⁰ This same Hezekiah also stopped the upper spring of the waters of Gihon, and brought them straight down on the west side of the City of David. Hezekiah prospered in all his works.

¹⁴ Then I went on to the Fountain Gate and to the Kingʼs Pool, but there was no place for the animal that was under me to pass.

⁷ Next to them, Melatiah the Gibeonite, and Jadon the Meronothite, the men of Gibeon, and of Mizpah, repaired the residence of the governor beyond the River.

³⁷ By the Fountain Gate, and straight before them, they went up by the stairs of the City of David, at the ascent of the wall, above the house of David, even to the Water Gate eastward.

⁶ "Because this people have refused the waters of Shiloah that go softly, and rejoice in Rezin and Remaliah's son;

⁶ Then went Jeremiah to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam to Mizpah, and lived with him among the people who were left in the land.

⁴ Or those eighteen, on whom the tower in Siloam fell, and killed them; do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others who dwell in Jerusalem?

⁷ and said to him, "Go, wash in the pool of Siloam" (which means "Sent"). So he went away, washed, and came back seeing.

²⁷ King Rehoboam made in their place shields of bronze, and committed them to the hands of the captains of the guard, who kept the door of the king's house. ²⁸ It was so, that as often as the king went into the house of the LORD, the guard bore them, and brought them back into the guard room.

²⁰ Now the rest of the acts of Hezekiah, and all his might, and how he made the pool, and the conduit, and brought water into the city, aren't they written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?

⁴⁵ The son of Shammai was Maon; and Maon was the father of Beth Zur.

⁷ Beth Zur, and Soco, and Adullam,

¹⁰ King Rehoboam made in their place shields of bronze, and committed them to the hands of the captains of the guard, who kept the door of the king's house. ¹¹ It was so, that as often as the king entered into the house of the LORD, the guard came and bore them, and brought them back into the guard room.

¹⁴ They buried him in his own tomb that he had dug out in the City of David, and laid him in the bed which was filled with spices and various kinds of sweet-scented herbs prepared by the perfumers' art, and they made a very great fire for him.

⁷ Look, it is Solomon's carriage. Sixty mighty men are around it, of the mighty men of Israel.

³ Then the LORD said to Isaiah, "Go out now to meet Ahaz, you, and Shearjashub your son, at the end of the conduit of the upper pool, on the highway of the Launderers' Field.

¹¹ You also made a reservoir between the two walls for the water of the old pool. But you did not look to him who had done this, neither did you have respect for him who purposed it long ago.

²⁹ "Brothers, I may tell you freely of the patriarch David, that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day.

⁴⁴ and Keilah, and Achzib, and Mareshah; nine cities with their villages.

¹ David was told, "Look, the Philistines are fighting against Keilah, and are robbing the threshing floors." ² Therefore David inquired of the LORD, saying, "Shall I go and strike these Philistines?" The LORD said to David, "Go strike the Philistines, and save Keilah." ³ David's men said to him, "Look, we are afraid here in Judah: how much more then if we go to Keilah against the armies of the Philistines?" ⁴ Then David inquired of the LORD yet again. The LORD answered him, and said, "Arise, go down to Keilah; for I will deliver the Philistines into your hand." ⁵ David and his men went to Keilah, and fought with the Philistines, and brought away their livestock, and killed them with a great slaughter. So David saved the inhabitants of Keilah. ⁶ It happened, when Abiathar the son of Ahimelech fled to David, that he went down with David to Keilah, having an ephod in his hand. ⁷ Now it was told Saul that David had come to Keilah. So Saul said, "God has sold him into my hand, for he has shut himself in by entering into a town that has gates and bars." ⁸ Then Saul summoned all the people to war, to go down to Keilah, to besiege David and his men. ⁹ David knew that Saul was devising mischief against him; and he said to Abiathar the priest, "Bring the ephod here." ¹⁰ Then David said, "LORD, God of Israel, your servant has surely heard that Saul seeks to come to Keilah, to destroy the city for my sake. ¹¹ And now, will Saul come down, as your servant has heard? LORD, God of Israel, tell your servant." And the LORD said, "He will come down." ¹² Then David said, "Will the men of Keilah deliver me and my men into the hand of Saul?" The LORD said, "They will deliver you up." ¹³ Then David and his men, who were about six hundred, arose and departed out of Keilah, and went wherever they could go. And Saul was told that David had escaped Keilah; so he gave up the pursuit.

⁴ David said, "Of these, twenty-four thousand were to oversee the work of the house of the LORD; six thousand were officers and judges;

¹⁶ After him, Nehemiah the son of Azbuk, the ruler of half the district of Beth Zur, made repairs to the place opposite the tombs of David, and to the pool that was made, and to the house of the mighty men.

⁸ Moreover the Levites: Jeshua, Binnui, Kadmiel, Sherebiah, Judah, and Mattaniah, who was over the thanksgiving, he and his brothers.

¹ Then Eliashib the high priest rose up with his brothers the priests, and they built the Sheep Gate. They sanctified it and set up its doors; they sanctified it as far as the Tower of the Hundred and as far as the Tower of Hananel.

²² As for the Levites, in the days of Eliashib, Joiada, and Johanan, and Jaddua, there were recorded the heads of ancestral houses; also the priests, in the reign of Daryavesh the Persian. ²³ The sons of Levi, heads of ancestral houses, were written in the scroll of the chronicles, even until the days of Johanan the son of Eliashib.

⁴ Now before this, Eliashib the priest, who was appointed over the rooms of the house of our God, being allied to Tobiah,

⁷ Also Jeshua, and Bani, and Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, the Levites, explained the law to the people, and the people stayed in their place.

⁴³ The Nethinim: the descendants of Ziha, the descendants of Hasupha, the descendants of Tabbaoth, ⁴⁴ the descendants of Keros, the descendants of Siaha, the descendants of Padon, ⁴⁵ the descendants of Lebanah, the descendants of Hagabah, the descendants of Akkub, ⁴⁶ the descendants of Hagab, the descendants of Shalmai, the descendants of Hanan, ⁴⁷ the descendants of Giddel, the descendants of Gahar, the descendants of Reaiah, ⁴⁸ the descendants of Rezin, the descendants of Nekoda, the descendants of Gazzam, ⁴⁹ the descendants of Uzza, the descendants of Paseah, the descendants of Besai, ⁵⁰ the descendants of Asnah, the descendants of Meunim, the descendants of Nephusim, ⁵¹ the descendants of Bakbuk, the descendants of Hakupha, the descendants of Harhur, ⁵² the descendants of Bazluth, the descendants of Mehida, the descendants of Harsha, ⁵³ the descendants of Barkos, the descendants of Sisera, the descendants of Temah, ⁵⁴ the descendants of Neziah, the descendants of Hatipha. ⁵⁵ The descendants of Solomon's servants: the descendants of Sotai, the descendants of Hassophereth, the descendants of Peruda, ⁵⁶ the descendants of Jaalah, the descendants of Darkon, the descendants of Giddel, ⁵⁷ the descendants of Shephatiah, the descendants of Hattil, the descendants of Pokereth Hazzebaim, the descendants of Amon. ⁵⁸ All the Nethinim, and the descendants of Solomon's servants, were three hundred ninety-two.

⁴⁶ The Nethinim: the descendants of Ziha, the descendants of Hasupha, the descendants of Tabbaoth, ⁴⁷ the descendants of Keros, the descendants of Siaha, the descendants of Padon, ⁴⁸ the descendants of Lebana, the descendants of Hagaba, the descendants of Salmai, ⁴⁹ the descendants of Hanan, the descendants of Giddel, the descendants of Gahar, ⁵⁰ the descendants of Reaiah, the descendants of Rezin, the descendants of Nekoda, ⁵¹ the descendants of Gazzam, the descendants of Uzza, the descendants of Paseah. ⁵² The descendants of Besai, the descendants of Meunim, the descendants of Nephusim,, ⁵³ the descendants of Bakbuk, the descendants of Hakupha, the descendants of Harhur, ⁵⁴ the descendants of Bazluth, the descendants of Mehida, the descendants of Harsha, ⁵⁵ the descendants of Barkos, the descendants of Sisera, the descendants of Temah, ⁵⁶ the descendants of Neziah, the descendants of Hatipha.

¹ All the people gathered themselves together as one man into the square that was before the Water Gate; and they spoke to Ezra the scribe to bring the scroll of the law of Moses, which the LORD had commanded to Israel.

³ And he read it before the square that was before the Water Gate from early morning until midday, in the presence of the men and the women, and of those who could understand; and the ears of all the people were attentive to the scroll of the law.

¹⁶ So the people went out, and brought them, and made themselves booths, everyone on the roof of his house, and in their courts, and in the courts of God's house, and in the broad place of the Water Gate, and in the broad place of the Ephraim Gate.

²⁸ The rest of the people, the priests, the Levites, the gatekeepers, the singers, the Nethinim, and all those who had separated themselves from the peoples of the lands to the law of God, their wives, their sons, and their daughters, everyone who had knowledge, and understanding—

²¹ But the temple servants lived on Ophel, and Ziha and Gishpa were in charge of the temple servants.

⁵ Next to them, the Tekoites made repairs; but their nobles did not put their necks to the work of their lord.

¹⁶ So they made way for her; and she went by the way of the horses' entry to the king's house. She was slain there.

⁸ Next to him, Uzziel the son of Harhaiah, goldsmiths, made repairs. Next to him, Hananiah one of the perfumers made repairs, and they fortified Jerusalem even to the Broad Wall.

³¹ After him, Malchijah one of the goldsmiths to the house of the Nethinim, and of the merchants, made repairs over against the Miphkad Gate, and to the ascent of the corner.
