²³ Jesus said to his disciples, "Truly I say to you, it is difficult for a rich person to enter the kingdom of heaven.

¹⁰ It shall be, when the LORD your God shall bring you into the land which he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give you, great and goodly cities, which you did not build, ¹¹ and houses full of all good things, which you did not fill, and cisterns dug out, which you did not dig, vineyards and olive trees, which you did not plant, and you shall eat and be full; ¹² then beware lest you forget the LORD, who brought you forth out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.

¹⁰ You shall eat and be full, and you shall bless the LORD your God for the good land which he has given you. ¹¹ Beware lest you forget the LORD your God, in not keeping his commandments, and his ordinances, and his statutes, which I command you this day: ¹² lest, when you have eaten and are full, and have built goodly houses, and lived in them; ¹³ and when your herds and your flocks multiply, and your silver and your gold is multiplied, and all that you have is multiplied; ¹⁴ then your heart be lifted up, and you forget the LORD your God, who brought you forth out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage; ¹⁵ who led you through the great and terrible wilderness, with fiery serpents and scorpions, and thirsty ground where there was no water; who brought you forth water out of the rock of flint; ¹⁶ who fed you in the wilderness with manna, which your fathers did not know; that he might humble you, and that he might prove you, to do you good at your latter end: ¹⁷ and lest you say in your heart, "My power and the might of my hand has gotten me this wealth." ¹⁸ But you shall remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you power to get wealth; that he may establish his covenant which he swore to your fathers, as at this day.

²⁴ "If I have made gold my hope, and have said to the fine gold, 'You are my confidence;' ²⁵ If I have rejoiced because my wealth was great, and because my hand had gotten much;

⁶ They trust in their wealth, and boast in the multitude of their riches. ⁷ Truly these cannot redeem a person, nor give to God a ransom for him.

¹⁶ Do not be afraid when a man is made rich, when the glory of his house is increased. ¹⁷ For when he dies he shall carry nothing away. His glory shall not descend after him. ¹⁸ Though while he lived he blessed his soul—and men praise you when you do well for yourself— ¹⁹ he shall go to the generation of his fathers. They shall never see the light.

²⁸ He who trusts in his riches will fall, but the righteous shall flourish as the green leaf.

⁸ Remove far from me falsehood and lies. Give me neither poverty nor riches. Feed me with the food that is needful for me; ⁹ lest I be full, deny you, and say, 'Who is the LORD?' or lest I be poor, and steal, and so dishonor the name of my God.

²⁰ For I tell you that unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, there is no way you will enter into the kingdom of heaven.

²² And what was sown among the thorns, this is he who hears the word, but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and he becomes unfruitful.

³ and said, "Truly I tell you, unless you turn, and become as little children, you will in no way enter into the kingdom of heaven.

³¹ Which of the two did the will of his father?" They said, "The first." Jesus said to them, "Truly I tell you that the tax collectors and the prostitutes are entering into the Kingdom of God before you.

²³ Jesus looked around, and said to his disciples, "How difficult it is for those who have riches to enter into the Kingdom of God."

¹⁵ He said to them, "Beware. Keep yourselves from all covetousness, for a man's life does not consist of the abundance of the things which he possesses." ¹⁶ He spoke a parable to them, saying, "The ground of a certain rich man brought forth abundantly. ¹⁷ He reasoned within himself, saying, 'What will I do, because I do not have room to store my crops?' ¹⁸ He said, 'This is what I will do. I will pull down my barns, and build bigger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. ¹⁹ I will tell my soul, "Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years. Take your ease, eat, drink, be merry."' ²⁰ "But God said to him, 'You foolish one, tonight your soul is required of you. The things which you have prepared—whose will they be?' ²¹ So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God."

¹³ No servant can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to one, and despise the other. You are not able to serve God and wealth." ¹⁴ The Pharisees, who were lovers of money, also heard all these things, and they scoffed at him.

¹⁹ "Now there was a certain rich man, and he was clothed in purple and fine linen, living in luxury every day. ²⁰ A certain beggar, named Lazarus, was placed at his gate, full of sores, ²¹ and desiring to be fed with the crumbs that fell from the rich man's table. Yes, even the dogs came and licked his sores. ²² It happened that the beggar died, and that he was carried away by the angels to Abraham's bosom. The rich man also died, and was buried. ²³ In hell, he lifted up his eyes, being in torment, and saw Abraham far off, and Lazarus at his bosom. ²⁴ He called out and said, 'Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue. For I am in anguish in this flame.' ²⁵ "But Abraham said, 'Son, remember that you, in your lifetime, received your good things, and Lazarus, in like manner, bad things. But now here he is comforted and you are in anguish. ²⁶ Besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, that those who want to pass from here to you are not able, and that none may cross over from there to us.' ²⁷ "He said, 'I ask you therefore, father, that you would send him to my father's house; ²⁸ for I have five brothers, that he may testify to them, so they won't also come into this place of torment.'

²⁴ And Jesus looked at him and said, "How hard it is for those who have riches to enter into the Kingdom of God.

³ Jesus answered him, "Truly, truly, I tell you, unless one is born again he cannot see the Kingdom of God."

⁵ Jesus answered, "Truly, truly, I tell you, unless one is born of water and Spirit he cannot enter into the Kingdom of God.

²² confirming the souls of the disciples, exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that through many afflictions we must enter into the Kingdom of God.

²⁶ For consider your calling, brothers, that not many were wise from a human perspective, not many mighty, not many of noble birth.

⁹ But those who are determined to be rich fall into a temptation and a snare and many foolish and harmful lusts, such as plunge people into ruin and destruction. ¹⁰ For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some have been led astray from the faith in their greed, and have pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

⁹ But let the brother in humble circumstances glory in his high position; ¹⁰ and the rich, in that he is made humble, because like the flower in the grass, he will pass away. ¹¹ For the sun arises with the scorching wind, and withers the grass, and the flower in it falls, and the beauty of its appearance perishes. So also will the rich person fade away in his pursuits.

⁶ But you have dishonored the poor person. Do not the rich oppress you, and personally drag you before the courts?

¹ Come now, you rich, weep and cry aloud for your miseries that are coming on you. ² Your riches are corrupted and your garments are moth-eaten. ³ Your gold and your silver are corroded, and their corrosion will be for a testimony against you, and will eat your flesh like fire. You have laid up your treasure in the last days. ⁴ Look, the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you have kept back by fraud, cry out, and the cries of those who reaped have entered into the ears of the Lord of hosts.
