²⁰ And what was sown on the rocky places, this is he who hears the word, and immediately with joy receives it;

¹³ Saul said, "There shall not a man be put to death this day; for today the LORD has worked deliverance in Israel." ¹⁴ Then Samuel said to the people, "Come, and let us go to Gilgal, and renew the kingdom there." ¹⁵ All the people went to Gilgal; and there they made Saul king before the LORD in Gilgal; and there they offered sacrifices of peace offerings before the LORD; and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.

² Joash did that which was right in the eyes of the LORD all the days of Jehoiada the priest.

⁶ The king called for Jehoiada the chief, and said to him, "Why haven't you required of the Levites to bring in the tax of Moses the servant of the LORD, and of the assembly of Israel, out of Judah and out of Jerusalem, for the tent of the testimony?"

¹⁴ When they had made an end, they brought the rest of the money before the king and Jehoiada, of which were made vessels for the house of the LORD, even vessels with which to minister and to offer, and spoons, and vessels of gold and silver. They offered burnt offerings in the house of the LORD continually all the days of Jehoiada.

³⁴ When he killed them, then they inquired after him. They returned and sought God earnestly. ³⁵ They remembered that God was their rock, the Most High God, their redeemer. ³⁶ But they flattered him with their mouth, and lied to him with their tongue. ³⁷ For their heart was not right with him, neither were they faithful in his covenant.

¹² Then they believed his words. They sang his praise. ¹³ They soon forgot his works. They did not wait for his counsel,

² Yet they seek me daily, and delight to know my ways: as a nation that did righteousness, and did not forsake the ordinance of their God, they ask of me righteous judgments; they delight to draw near to God.

³¹ They come to you as the people come, and they sit before you as my people, and they hear your words, but do not do them; for with their mouth they show much love, but their heart goes after their gain. ³² Look, you are to them as a very lovely song of one who has a pleasant voice, and can play well on an instrument; for they hear your words, but they do not do them.

⁵ And others fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil, and immediately they sprang up, because they had no depth of earth. ⁶ But when the sun had risen, they were scorched. Because they had no root, they withered away.

¹⁶ And these in a similar way are those who are sown on the rocky places, who, when they have heard the word, immediately receive it with joy. ¹⁷ And they have no root in themselves, but are short-lived. Then, when oppression or persecution arises because of the word, immediately they stumble.

²⁰ for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and kept him safe. And when he heard him, he was very perplexed, but he heard him gladly.

³⁵ He was the burning and shining lamp, and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light.
