²⁵ "But Abraham said, 'Son, remember that you, in your lifetime, received your good things, and Lazarus, in like manner, bad things. But now here he is comforted and you are in anguish.

¹³ They spend their days in prosperity. In an instant they go down to Sheol. ¹⁴ They tell God, 'Depart from us, for we do not want to know about your ways.

¹⁸ Yet he filled their houses with good things, but the counsel of the wicked is far from me.

¹⁴ from men with your hand, LORD, from men of the world, whose portion is in this life. You fill their womb with treasure. They are satisfied with children, and they leave their wealth to their little ones.

³⁵ I have seen the wicked wielding great power, and towering like a cedar of Lebanon. ³⁶ And I passed by, and look, he was not. And I looked for him, but he could not be found.

¹¹ Their tombs are their homes forever, and their dwelling places to all generations. They name their lands after themselves.

⁷ Their sin proceeds forth from fatness. Their hearts overflow with imaginations.

¹² Look, these are the wicked. Being always at ease, they increase in riches. ¹³ Surely in vain I have cleansed my heart, and washed my hands in innocence, ¹⁴ For all day long have I been plagued, and punished every morning. ¹⁵ If I had said, "I will speak thus;" look, I would have betrayed the generation of your children. ¹⁶ When I tried to understand this, it was too painful for me; ¹⁷ Until I entered God's sanctuary, and considered their latter end. ¹⁸ Surely you set them in slippery places. You throw them down to destruction. ¹⁹ How they are suddenly destroyed. They are completely swept away with terrors.

⁷ Jerusalem remembers in the days of her affliction and wandering all her precious things that were from the days of old: when her people fell into the hand of the adversary, and no one helped her. The adversaries saw her, they mocked at her desolations.

²² You his son, Belshazzar, have not humbled your heart, though you knew all this, ²³ but have lifted up yourself against the Lord of heaven. And they have brought the vessels of his house before you, and you and your lords, your wives and your secondary wives, have drunk wine from them. And you have praised the gods of silver and gold, of bronze, iron, wood, and stone, which do not see, nor hear, nor know. And the God in whose hand your breath is, and whose are all your ways, you have not glorified.

³⁰ In that night Belshazzar the Chaldean King was slain.

⁴⁵ If your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off.[note: Hyperbole, or Semitic idiom, meaning to stop doing a sin] It is better for you to enter into life lame, rather than having your two feet to be cast into hell.

²⁴ "But woe to you who are rich. For you have received your consolation.

²⁰ A certain beggar, named Lazarus, was placed at his gate, full of sores,

²³ In hell, he lifted up his eyes, being in torment, and saw Abraham far off, and Lazarus at his bosom.

³³ I have told you these things, that in me you may have peace. In the world you have oppression; but cheer up. I have overcome the world."

²² confirming the souls of the disciples, exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that through many afflictions we must enter into the Kingdom of God.

⁷ because the mind set on the flesh is hostile towards God, for it does not submit to God's law; indeed, it cannot.

¹⁹ whose end is destruction, whose god is the belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who think about earthly things.

³ that no one be moved by these afflictions. For you know that we are appointed to this task.

²⁵ choosing rather to share ill treatment with God's people, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a time;

¹⁵ Do not love the world, neither the things that are in the world. If anyone loves the world, the Father's love is not in him.

¹⁴ So I said to him, "My lord, you know." He said to me, "These are the ones who came out of the great tribulation. They washed their robes, and made them white in the Lamb's blood.
